Chapter 64
“I’m going to stay here until my brother comes. After that, I don’t know yet whether I will be held hostage or if I will be kicked out.”
As soon as Jennifer sat down, she brought up her story. Meanwhile, Stella looked like she really didn’t know what had happened. All the employees who were there were all thoroughly verified by the Mason.
“So, let’s get along well. Although we are not in the same situation, we have something in common from other countries, so why not help each other?”
Saying so, Jennifer scoured her eyes thoroughly.
“I was very saddened to hear the princess’ story. How scary would that be to be alone here?”
She then gently grabbed Stella’s hand, and she stiffened her body.
‘…Oh, is this different from the original story?’
I tilted my head and watched Jennifer’s actions.
“It was like that at first, but now it’s okay.”
Answering her, Stella smiled faintly and patted her necklace before rolling her eyes anxiously. Seeing that, Jennifer opened her mouth.
“You don’t even have to do that to me. I’m still afraid.”
“No, that’s not true…”
“I know because I have met His Majesty the Emperor. It’s the first time I’ve ever experienced such murderous energy in my life.”
At that, she then trembled exaggeratedly.
“Did His Majesty do the same to the Princess?”
“Yes. In fact, all of the envoys almost died. So I can understand the Princess’s feelings.”
Even if her words were not reassuring, Stella kept glancing around her.
‘Why is she doing that…? Who was there before Jennifer came?’
As Stella moved closer, just in case Jennifer was doing something, she hardened her body and glanced around in an obvious way.
“Princess, why are you doing this? I wonder if anyone is going to overhear?”
Jennifer wrinkled her forehead slightly and waved her hand.
“If someone comes, my lady-in-waiting will tell me right away.”
“Oh, no. Not like that.”
Stella clenched her necklace nervously. The scene continued even after the maids had left refreshments.
“How did the Princess get to be a hostage? I’m a little worried about what you’ll be like in a month or so.”
As she sighed, her eyes watched Stella’s reaction.
“I haven’t done anything. I’m just left with His Majesty’s permission.”
At those words, Jennifer’s eyes lit up for a moment.
“Have you seen His Majesty before…?”
“Oh, no. This was my first time.”
“Is he really scary?”
“Yes. At first, I was so scared, my legs were shaking and my head was turning white.” Stella said softly as she touched the teacup.
“Now? How are you now?”
“Now is…”
Stella seemed to choose her words for a moment before slowly uttering those words out, “…It’s not as scary as the first time. Thank you for that.”
Her ending was small, though the corners of Jennifer’s eyebrows rose.
“…It’s okay. I’m still scared.”
Someone who broke into the library wouldn’t say Declan looked good. Thinking that, I glared at Jennifer with a puzzled look.
“Well, I’m sorry… but I’m not feeling well. I just want to go in.”
Stella spoke cautiously with an apologetic expression. Even though the displeasure on Jennifer’s face was vivid, Stella was indeed almost pale, so she let her go.
“I, I wasn’t being considerate. It hasn’t been long since you’ve been through a hard time.”
“Oh, no. Sorry.”
“It’s okay. It was my rudeness. Please, accept my present instead.”
“A gift?”
Stella looked surprised as if she had never expected it.
“It’s a bribe to get along with me.”
Jennifer answered as she rolled her eyes and held out a box. As soon as I saw the present, I frowned.
“I prepared this with the intention of you getting a good night’s sleep.”
“Thank you. I didn’t prepare anything…”
“Come and play with me often. That’s it.”
Eventually, she said goodbye to Stella and left without any regrets. Although I had to go after Jennifer, I couldn’t let my steps fall as the present caught my eye.
Jennifer’s present was a scented candle.
‘Maybe, that scented candle contains sleep medicine.’
The more she smells the incense, the more poisonous it becomes.
It was a poison that was very difficult to detect as there were no symptoms except for a deeper sleep than usual. In the original story, as Stella’s condition became critical, Mason found out and dealt with it later.
‘I can’t wait until then, what should I do?’
…She might use it tonight, so I had to deal with it unconditionally.
As I contemplate how to deal with it, Stella, who was still standing still in her seat, opened her mouth.
“Excuse me, is…is anyone here?”
In my puzzled mind, she quickly glanced around her, though there was no one else anywhere.
“It’s, it’s fine, so come out. I want to ask you something.”
Even though Stella was terrified a lot, she continued to speak in a trembling voice.
‘Why is she doing this? Perhaps, this one, too…?’
I wondered if she was the same as Hans, but then I shook my head.
“Strange. There was definitely a reaction.”
Talking to herself, Stella fiddled with her necklace. Whenever Declan talked to her, she frequently fidgeted with her necklace.
‘What is that? I want to ask…’
With her head bowed, she brought her face closer to her necklace, and Stella stood up from her seat, surprised.
‘Huh…? Can she feel me?’
If she didn’t she wouldn’t be surprised as soon as I got close…?
“Is there really no one?”
Asking that, she looked around anxiously.
“This is probably because of me.”
It could be an illusion, but she was strangely convinced of that.
“I’ll have to look at the necklace first.”
As for why her eyes kept moving, I felt like I had to know why Stella was behaving like that.
“Still, first, take care of that incense candle.”
With that thought, I hurriedly turned my steps back and returned to the library. As I went inside, Declan was already sitting with a stiffened face and his arms crossed.
‘Eekk— If I had known he would come so soon, I would have come sooner…’
I smiled broadly and ran to him.
“Uh, when did you come?”
“What have I said?”
My body shuddered at the cold tone of his voice.
“…You told me never to leave this place.”
When I answered in a crawling voice, he twisted his lips, waving the note I had written. He was so angry that his green eyes froze. If I hesitated like this, Declan’s anger would have grown even greater…
“I’m sorry. I had to drop by Princess Medicis suddenly.”
“Didn’t I say that going alone is dangerous?”
I secretly noticed the lowered voice when he was talking about me going out. The quiet burning of anger could be seen in his eyes.
Eventually, Declan let out a long sigh.
“I’m sorry for worrying you.”
I approached and gently touched his face.
“I was concerned that she might be plotting a scheme to harm Your Majesty, so I followed her.”
“Do that while you’re with me. What if you get hurt?”
At some point, he didn’t look at me and found Chloe instead. I could tell just by looking at his eyes.
‘Perhaps, if I were a human, I would be the only one with those green eyes…’
I made eye contact and gently wiped his eyes.
“When Your Majesty is present, they are just as nervous. Then, it will be difficult to seize the opportunity.”
“Isn’t your safety the most important thing?”
“I made a decision after careful consideration, so don’t be too harsh.”
Declan sighed briefly as he lowered his eyebrows and tilted his head.
“Are there any injuries?”
I smiled slightly at the question. He always asks like that, even though he knew that I was a soul full well.
“Yes, I went safely.”
“That’s a relief.”
It was then that the stiff expression on his face was relieved.
“There is something I need to deal with urgently. So, please call the Chancellor.”
At once, Declan’s eyes became sharp.
“Let’s go and talk.”
That way, we moved to the office and called Mason.
“Erica came to visit Princess Medicis today. Erica says that she has an urgent matter to deal with.”
Mason glanced at the doll at Declan’s explanation.
“Today, Princess Medicis came to me and gave me a present.”
I opened the gift box in front of me and showed him the brooch.
Declan delivered my words to Mason.
“Conceivably, she was trying to make up for what happened last time. Since she can’t access His Majesty, she used her brain.”
“Even though I gave him so many warnings. You can’t say bad things about not smart ones.”
Declan said, clicking his tongue, wondering if he had forgotten that he had shed murderous energy on and threatened her with his sword. Then, as Mason reached out to examine the brooch, black smoke rushed towards him.
…Huh? He couldn’t touch that—
“It’s dangerous. Don’t touch it!”
