Chapter 58: Imperial Guards (Part 2)
After sending Qi Ren off, Luo Qian gathered a lot of food and went back to the rooftop.
He had not enjoyed the benefits of being a First-Grade secret supervisor, yet he had been ordered about and had to stay on the roof. Luo Qian mumbled and felt it wasn’t worth it. With this pocket of time, he could have gone to the Human Realm, gotten himself two laptops, and sold a few discs. Even if he had gone to buy underwear for Qi Ren, the returns would have been much higher than what he was doing.
After he put down the food, Luo Qian laid on the ground and set up the sniper rifle to observe Ge Yi Zhang. Several new customers had arrived. Some of them looked at the fabric, chose a few pieces, and left after paying the deposit. There was nothing suspicious about it.
After those people left, Luo Qian kept watching for quite a while. The sky gradually darkened. Fortunately, the scope of the sniper rifle had an infrared function. He could see the target even in the dark night.
Zhang Laocheng was about to close the shop. He pulled down the window.
Luo Qian’s sight never left him.
Suddenly, a bright light flashed past the scope; the light momentarily blinded Luo Qian. Luo Qian’s vision went blank, and for a short while, he couldn’t see anything.
When he rubbed his eyes and looked at Ge Yi Zhang again, Zhang Laocheng had already crushed a Communication Jade Talisman in his hand and began to pack things in a hurry. It turned out that the light just now was a Communication Jade Talisman flying in from outside the window. The light could not be seen during the day, but it appeared particularly bright in the dim sky.
It was not that Luo Qian was discovered.
Zhang Laocheng dug something out from a hidden compartment in the wall and stuffed it into a cloth bag. With a wave of his hand, a ball of flame fell on the cloth. A raging flame rose immediately, and the fire spread quickly.
Luo Qian was shocked. There must be something wrong with Zhang Laocheng. He is trying to run away!
He didn’t dare to be careless. He quickly took out the communication talisman, squeezed it tight, and infused it with his Immortal power. Luo Qian said loudly, “Zhang Laocheng is going to escape. Sir Zheng, what should I do?”
Zheng Daoguang’s voice came from the communication talisman. “Stop him!”
“Stop him?” Luo Qian yelled at the talisman. “I’m a Tribulation Immortal. How do you want me to stop him?!”
“Zhang Laocheng’s cultivation level is not high. You just need to stall for time and wait for the Imperial Guards to arrive. Hurry up, go!”
Imperial Guards? Stall for time? Luo Qian’s thoughts were in a mess.
Zhang Laocheng had exited the door. He had a bag on his body and didn’t bring any other things.
So many things are stuffed into that bag; it should be an Imperial Artifact. Would the cultivation level of someone who can use an Imperial Artifact be low?
Zhang Laocheng jumped up into the air and crossed his hands. Seals appeared one by one. He made a sound and pressed his palms down.
Bang—
The flames grew, and Ge Yi Zhang was swallowed into the ground. It sank five or six meters, and two huge, distinct flaming palm prints appeared on the ground!
Oh my God, Luo Qian exclaimed in his heart. Is this a joke? Did the Dark Arrest Council give me incorrect information? This is the works of a Fifth-Order Immortal at least!
“Luo Qian, quickly!” Zheng Daoguang urged him anxiously through the communication talisman. Outside, Zhang Laocheng put on the bag on his back, leaped, and a cloud of fire rolled…
Bang!
The cloud of fire bolted. Zhang Laocheng pounced forward tens of meters and fell down headfirst.
…
On Mountain Feng Tong, dozens of Immortal officials patrolled back and forth. Businessmen closed their doors and were full of awe for these violent Immortal institutions. Brave monkey clerks leaned against the windows and watched. They were envious of the Immortal officials’ black-and-red uniforms and tall official hats.
Zhang Laocheng’s corpse laid quietly on the street. The upper half of his body was on the flagpole of a banner. There were no obvious injuries on his body. More than a dozen Immortal officials surrounded his body. An Immortal dressed in strange clothes was examining Zhang Laocheng’s body. He was a post-mortem examiner in the Immortal Realm.
Dumbfounded, Luo Qian looked at the Immortals in black-and-red uniforms. Although he had never seen these uniforms, he was familiar with them! He tried to recall what Zheng Daoguang said. He seemed to have mentioned something like: “You just need to stall for time and wait for the Imperial Guards to arrive.”
Damn, these are the Imperial Guards!
Luo Qian felt his limbs go cold. There seemed to be a pot of 10,000-year-old frost on his head. He was surrounded by a cold wind from the Nine Nether Frosted Realm. If he was not numb by now, he would definitely smack himself.
The Imperial Guards were coming, yet you risked your life to help others catch the convict. Are you seeking death? When Zheng Daoguang yelled out that sentence, I should have realized and quickly fled.
“This brother…” A voice pulled Luo Qian back into reality. He had become the ‘partner’ of the Imperial Guards and had made significant contributions. Several Immortals in black-and-red uniform surrounded him, enthusiastically treating him with courtesy.
Luo Qian found their ‘enthusiasm’ hard to bear. He was a ‘rat,’ after all. Even though this rat had the biggest biceps in the group of rats, he still shook with fear when he saw a cat for the first time.
The person who had just greeted him was a gray-haired old man full of energy. “This brother, I’m Lu Xiaofeng, the supervisor of the Imperial Guards. We got the wrong information on tonight’s operation. Thanks to your support, we were able to catch this thief.”
Damn, the first ‘cat’ I meet is a big cat. Luo Qian cursed silently at his luck. He forced a smile on his face and said, “Sir Lu, you’re too polite…”
Lu Xiaofeng asked curiously, “Brother, what’s wrong? Are you injured? Do you feel unwell? Men…”
Luo Qian hurriedly stopped him. “It’s nothing, Sir Lu. It’s just… it’s the first time I killed someone, and I feel a little uncomfortable.”
Thankfully, Lu Xiaofeng accepted his lame excuse. The Immortal Realm was different from before. Many Immortals were born in the Immortal Realm, unlike in the past, when many from the Human Realm struggled to ascend and become Immortals. They had never encountered blood. It was possible for them to feel uncomfortable just by killing someone.
Luo Qian said, “Let me rest for a while…” Actually, he meant: “Damn. Make these Imperial Guards go far, far away from me!”
Lu Xiaofeng waved his hands, and his subordinates retreated. Luo Qian stumbled back to his medicine hall.
Lu Xiaofeng watched his back and felt strange. Beside him, the post-mortem examiner reported to him. “Sir, convict Zhang Laocheng died of poisoning.”
Lu Xiaofeng was not surprised. Such tricks were common to people from the Dark Arrest Council.
“However, the way he was poisoned was a little strange,” said the post-mortem examiner.
Lu Xiaofeng became curious. “How so?”
“If I’m not wrong, convict Zhang Laocheng is at the level of a Fifth-Order Immortal. His protective Immortal aura would be hard to break through. However, he only had one small wound on his body…”
Lu Xiaofeng was horrified. He looked at Luo Medicine Hall intently. Are there Sixth-Order Immortals hiding inside?
From the horizon, a green light tumbled as thunder and wind fluctuated and fell to the ground with a loud noise. The green light converged, and a blue-and-white carriage appeared with a horse’s neigh.
Zheng Daoguang alighted from the carriage.
Lu Xiaofeng hurriedly stepped forward and bowed. “Subordinate Lu Xiaofeng greets Sir Zheng. With Sir Zheng’s help, the convict was killed and didn’t escape.”
Zheng Daoguang asked anxiously, “Where is Luo Qian?” There was only one person from the Dark Arrest Council around.
Lu Xiaofeng looked at Luo Medicine Hall.
Zheng Daoguang asked softly, “Was his identity exposed?”
Lu Xiaofeng shook his head. “Don’t worry, Sir. We sealed off the entire street once we arrived.”
Zheng Daoguang nodded and strode towards Luo Medicine Hall.
Luo Qian had already seen Zheng Daoguang coming. He was a little annoyed with Zheng Daoguang’s orders and couldn’t be bothered to go out and welcome him. When Zheng Daoguang entered the medicine hall, Luo Qian greeted him lukewarmly and sat there. He didn’t offer him tea or a seat.
Zheng Daoguang was magnanimous; he understood Luo Qian’s thoughts. He laughed and said, “Why? Are you blaming me?”
Luo Qian humphed and rolled his eyes.
Zheng Daoguang laughed loudly. “Kid, you have quite the temper!” He stood up, paced for two steps, then asked, “Do you know why I gave you such orders?”
“You’re the boss, and you have your plans. I’m just a minion. Who am I to refuse your orders?”
Zheng Daoguang said sternly, “It’s for your own good. It’s indeed very risky to let you attack. However, I’ve also heard that you escaped death twice, right?” Information collecting was what the Dark Arrest Council was good at. It was impossible to hide any secrets from them.
Luo Qian didn’t deny it.
“This is an opportunity for you to show your capability in front of the Imperial Guards. Don’t underestimate the Imperial Guards. They play a pivotal role in the Immortal Realm. In the future, if we want to fight against dissidents, we will need their help. This time, even if you die, you will just be reborn again. However, the Imperial Guards will owe you a great favor this way. It will be much easier to deal with them in the future.”
Luo Qian was still upset. “In short, you sacrificed me to fulfill your plans. These days, the organizations are reliable. I understand.”
Zheng Daoguang laughed out of anger. “Why don’t you understand? You joined much later. Which one of my direct subordinates will accept you? Even Chen Chong was very dissatisfied with you. If you don’t have any achievements, how will you persuade them in the future?”
Luo Qian was shocked. “Y-you mean…”
Zheng Daoguang nodded. “I think highly of your capabilities. I can’t stay in my position forever. Once I go up, this position will be yours!” He appeared sincere; it didn’t seem like he was lying.
Luo Qian was appalled. “Old man, are you serious?”
Zheng Daoguang smiled. “Am I very old?”
