- Chapter 14 - In My Previous Life I Was a Saint, but Now I Want to Cut Corners Chapter 14
After Angel’s commotion had settled down, the teacher continued with his introduction and started our first lesson.
The lesson was pretty straightforward. We learned that mages could only possess the magic attribute of their guardian spirit. So each attribute has its own dedicated teacher.
The first teacher that was presented to me was Marcus, and his attribute was water, so his guardian spirit was Undine, just like my mother’s and prince Cecil’s.
“My guardian spirit is Undine. Undine is a kind and noble spirit, and as students and members of society, we should consider meeting the expectations of our guardian spirits. While the choice of whether to live up to their prestigiousness is entirely up to you, be considerate of your fellow attribute mages. How people perceive each guardian spirit is based on their casters. So try not to drag down the rest of your fellow casters with imprudent behaviors.”
Professor Marcus’s Undine appeared to have a more slightly purple hue in its blue, so perhaps he has some royalty in his bloodline.
“Alright then, may the following students stand up, Cecil Ray Eltria, Stephen Jones, Pascal Drury, Sandra Keats, Rowena Melvis, and Catherine Calderwood. Please step forward.”
Moments after, Professor Marcus called out towards the students with Undine. They silently left the room, following Marcus towards an unknown location.
“Hello, students! My name is Thomas Cohen. I am a Professor that specializes in the Salamander spirit! It’s a pleasure to meet all of you, including those not in my class. I need the following students to please follow me. Magdalena Ortiz, Bernard Thomason, Colleen Murdock. While there are not many salamander spirits this year, we will still have an engaging time. All right then, let’s head out.”
Thomas Cohen was a large, muscular man. He looked more like a veteran knight rather than a professor. His most noticeable features outside his muscles is his vibrant red fiery hair.
Each student will spend the first two years learning all the basics of magical practice. Then they will spend the next five years learning specialized magical studies.
While many students don’t have the talent to become full-fledged mages, most of them do end up joining the knight core. Knights who can perform magical attacks are invaluable and are awarded with most prestigious of ranks.
Thomas Cohen was an example of just that. He became a Knight and fought on the front lines of war. One day during a battle with a mighty demon, he almost lost his leg and was forced to retire from the Knight core.
He was the most likely candidate to take the Knight Marshal’s position, but because of his injury, He resigned and became a teacher to push the next generations in the right direction.
Note: Knight Marshal is the highest-ranking position in the knight titles; essentially, he was to become the leader of the entire knight core.
However, outside of his impressive background, all the young girls try to curry his favor, as he is considered the “Hottest man” in school.
One by one, the teachers introduced themselves and called out their students to leave with them. I was the only one left… I was alone in the empty classroom…
Aerials usually are invisible to everyone, including their partners, so it’s hard to determine if they exist or not. It’s common for Aerial owners to hide that they have a guardian spirit since they don’t want to be accused of lying about it.
If that wasn’t bad enough, most noble children who are given Aerials are soon abandoned by their parents as if they never existed in the first place. People believed Aerials didn’t exist or were for people with incredibly weak magical power. So it’s common for those children to be cast out of their homes and live on the streets.
“Ah, You must be Ms. Renaria Sheridan, and Uhm, my name is Paul Montt. I also have the protection of Aerial. Shall we head out?”
Paul Montt was the wind magic professor. He was a frail and sickly-looking man. He had an ordinary look to him, Brown hair with brown eyes, and given his manner of speech, and he was more than likely from a commoner background, which was not an insult towards him as a person.
“Oh, Hello, Mr. Montt, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
I decided regardless of his guardian and his background. I would show my utmost respect towards him. I bowed in respect as if I was meeting the king himself, which caused Paul’s Eyes to widen in surprise.
I most likely surprised him with my gestures as I, a high-ranking Noblewoman, would bow in respect towards a commoner professor.
Afterward, we moved towards the magic classrooms, which were separated by one attribute. First came water magic, then fire, and at the very end was the wind classroom.
As soon as we opened the door towards the classroom, all eyes turned towards me. About five other students were sitting within the classroom, which clearly indicated that the wind classroom had much fewer students than the others.
Some of the students looked at me with confusion, as if someone with my pedigree would openly admit to having an Aerial spirit. The students whispered in the silent room. However, their whispers did not affect me, and I brushed it off.
“Well then, class… I uh, I’m not entirely sure how I should introduce myself properly, So I think I’ll start off by introducing your names, as I mentioned before, my name is Paul Montt, and like you all, I have formed a contract with the wind spirit named Aerial. I’m personally an alumnus from this school, so while I may be your teacher, think of me more as your senior. Starting from today, we will be learning wind magic together. It’s a pleasure to meet you all, and I hope we can all broaden our horizons together.”
After professor Montt had introduced himself, he had each student do the same, so we could learn each other’s names.
“My name is Lance Eyring, and It’s nice to meet you all…”
Lance was a child of a noble family, and it was written entirely on his facial expression that he had mixed feelings about being here. So he made a brief introduction and rushed back down on his seat.
“Hiya! My name is Eric Hammet, and I’m not sure about all of you, but I’ve decided to follow in my father’s footsteps and become a sailor! So, while many are indifferent about Aerials, I’m delighted Aerial has chosen me as its partner! It’s nice to meet all of you! Let’s get along!”
Eric Hammet was a tan-skinned pearly white teethed boy of the sea, and his personality showed it.
“Hello, I’m Rose Meyer, and I’m hoping that Aerial will assist me in getting my windmills going for my farms. It’s nice to meet you all.”
“H-Hello… I’m… Marie Wilkinson… It’s… Nice to m-meet you all…”
While Rose and Marie are both aristocrats, their personalities are polar opposites. Marie was more withheld and anxious, while Rose was direct and straight to the point.
“Hello, My name is Emma Burt. Not much to talk about on my side of things, but it’s a pleasure to meet you all.”
Emma was a freckled red-haired girl. Out of all the other students, her introduction was the most ‘normal.’
Finally, it was my turn…
“Hello everyone, My name is Renaria Sheridan, and I look forward to working with every one of you.”
At the mere mention of my last name, the students gasped.
“Wait, Sheridan? Do you mean the same Sheridan from those plays? Why is their daughter such a chink in their armor!”
I would be lying if I didn’t consider those words not to be hurtful. Eric was incredibly rude.
“haha! You’re a thorn in your family, aren’t you, Renaria? What kind of disgrace would your family feel from a worthless daughter like yourself to make a contract with Aerial! Hahaha!”
Lance snickered with malicious intent.
I wanted to retort towards the pure disrespect that was placed in front of me. However, while I was angry, someone was even more enraged by the situation. It was Aria. You could see the anger all over her face.
“Don’t give me that crap! You’re the one who signed the contract! How dare you mock us!”
A storm broke out that flung Lance’s desk into the air in response to Arias’s discontent.
“Aria, stop it! Please! You’re going to blow everyone away!”
Aria came to her senses and realized what she was doing. Soon after, the wind quickly died. However, the room was a complete mess. I could only pinch the skin between my eyes and groan.
