- Chapter 5 - In My Previous Life I Was a Saint, but Now I Want to Cut Corners Chapter 5
I would be lying if I said it didn’t hurt that Aerial called my methods old… But it’s okay. It may be for the best that I tell Aerial about my previous life
I explained to Aerial that I was a saint who was forced to sacrifice herself for the nobility in my previous life. Now my plans are to have a calm and laid back life. I could tell Aerial was excited by the sparkle in her eyes as she looked at me.
“I see, I see, no wonder you have such powerful magic.”
Aerial was flapping her wings in excitement. You could see the sparkles and reflections in her hair as she flapped around with joy.
“Even if you use magic like people do today, it will be extremely powerful just as before.”
I gasp in frustration. I had no intention of standing out… I just wanted to live like the average noble. Overwhelmed with frustration, I sat down and hid my face behind my hands to conceal my frustration.
“The way I see it, Renaria, if you used holy magic seriously, you may even be able to revive people who have died recently.”
“Wh-What did you say!?”
//PRNOTE: Nani?!
No impossible even in my previous life, I could never bring back someone already dead. If I could do that, I would be praised as a messenger of god himself.
“As guardians and masters, our goal is to collect as many magical elements that are proportional to the magic power owned by our masters. So since I’ve made a contract with you, I will be able to collect a lot of magical elements!”
“Wouldn’t that make me some sort of saint?! I don’t want that! Anything but that!”
“Well… to avoid that, we could put a magical dampening enchantment on your wand instead of the current one that amplifies it…”
I forgot the wand itself was made to amplify our magical abilities. I recall my father telling me that he embedded tanzanite into my wand to match my eyes. Tanzanite is an exceptionally high-quality magical gem…
“Wait, Aerial, is it possible to just not collect magical elements?”
If Aerial agrees to this, then there is no need to enchant the wand to be a dampening enchantment. However, as soon as I said that, she looked at me in annoyance while crossing her arms.
“Hmph… I suppose we could add something like that to your wand…”
“Would you know how to do that, Aerial?”
“Sorry, I don’t know how to do that. Wands are human tools you would need to talk to someone else about something like that.”
I couldn’t exactly ask anyone… I haven’t made my debut in society yet. So my options are somewhat limited. I also haven’t even started school yet…. I would need to ask my family, and I’m afraid they would ask far too many questions that I can’t answer.
“I’ll be honest with you Renaria, it’s already impressive that humans can amplify magic with tiny sticks like that.”
Aerial was dancing around my wand with a curious look.
“Well, something like this is beyond me.”
“Also, I need to ask if the spell was really only supposed to drop a single leaf from a tree/twig.”
“Y-Yes…”
“Woah! Incredible! I thought you were going to uproot the entire forest.”
//PRNOTE: “Yeet”
“N-No way! I didn’t mean to!”
My face was burning with embarrassment as Aerial flew around, making light of my accidental destruction of the forest.
“No, actually… I thought you were practicing your magical powers so you would take over the world! Fufu!”
Aerial continued to dance around, laughing in excitement as she teased me.
“Th-Th-There is n-n-no way! I could never do that!”
“Oh? I would wager you could”
“No! I would never!”
I couldn’t hold back my frustration anymore and let out a large sigh because I wasn’t sure if Aerial was joking or not… The idea that I was capable of doing something like that frightened me… How am I supposed to live quietly if I could take over the entire world… The royalty would want to use me as a weapon or something worse… I really didn’t want to think about that…
“Well, if you don’t want to take over the world, then we need to figure out a way to make your magic less powerful. So this is what we are gonna do. I will gather the right elements, and you draw a pattern with your wand.”
“A pattern?”
“Yes! We can practice the magic patterns and see if we can limit the magic usage.”
I see… This might work. I would be learning these patterns anyway when I officially join the academy regardless… So maybe if I learn beforehand how to control the magic, I won’t stand out…
“But… I haven’t learned them yet…”
“Oh, really? So is there somewhere you can learn them?”
“Yeah… There is a school that teaches children how to learn magic. I’ll be going there soon…”
“Huh? School? Is that… Like a fun place? I’ve only heard about something like this a few times.”
“Honestly… I don’t know. I’ve never been to a school before… Not even in my past life… But… It does sound fun. I’ll get a chance to meet some other kids my age… Maybe I’ll be able to make some friends there.”
I’ve only really heard about school from my brother Arthur when he came home. I know that the school was a boarding school, so I’ll be living there while I’m attending it. So I guess I’m looking forward to going to school…
However, the idea is I’ll be attending school while the royalty is there… It makes me uneasy if I’m honest with myself. Especially since I know, the second prince will be in my class. But… this second prince isn’t Marius, right? There is no way… It’s impossible, right?
“Actually… I don’t know… Maybe avoiding friends would be best for me…”
“Well, If you don’t make any friends, you’ll always have me, Renaria! We are partners for life!”
I’m not exactly worried about that. But seeing Aerial dance around me with excitement, lightens the mood. Seeing her frolic around made me smile and I was really glad that she was here…
“Oh… Aerial, do you perhaps have a name?”
“A name?”
“Yeah… We call wind spirits’ Aerials’ as a general name for your kind. However, I wonder if you have a unique name? You know… like how each human has a unique name?”
“Nope! We don’t have any unique names! That’s what our contractors give us!”
“Huh? You want me to name you…?”
“Yes! I’ve never had a contract with someone before. So I want you to name me!”
Huh… What name should I give her?
“I wonder… if the name Aria would work… It means ‘air’ in an ancient language.”
//TLNOTE: They called them Phil. I’m sorry, but no. //PRNOTE: Thank you!
That should work. It’s an ancient word that no one probably even remembers these days…
“Hmmm, Aria… Nice! I like it! That’s what I want my name to be from now on!”
Aria once again, fluttered around excitingly, using her magic to play with my hair. I could tell she really loved her name, judging by her reaction. I’m really glad the name I chose made her this happy.
