Step 1, lift your head and inhale.
Sit down cross-legged, retract your abdomen, and take a deep breath. At the same time, squeeze the back of your shoulder blade and bend back slightly to suck in ample breath. When doing this action, pay attention to how much you can do. Do not rush, especially in these early stages of training. If you raise your head too much, you can get dizzy.
And this action will allow you to absorb the energy of heaven and earth in the air and provide a foundation for your body’s evolution.
Step 2, hold your breath.
The pause after inhaling is a transitional state of breath. At this time, the air is no longer entering or exiting. Take note of the time you hold your breath. If you hold it for too long, it can also cause dizziness. The time you hold your breath should be proportional to the functions of your body, heart, lungs, and meridians. Do not force yourself, especially when you are practicing for the first time. For those of you who are older, have poor physiques, or have relatively serious cardiovascular diseases, hold your breath for a shorter time.
Step 3, the head is calm.
With no air leaking from your nose or mouth, lift up your shoulder blades, move forward, then lower them. At the same time, be mindful of loosening your shoulders and arching your lower back (this step needs to be done well; it is very crucial). Then, you would slowly and naturally sink your Qi into your Dantian. What you have to pay attention to is that when you sink your Qi, you have to let your body and mind be in a relaxed state. Only then would you be able to relax your shoulders and arch your lower back easily. The effect would be very good.
Step 4, hold your breath.
After sinking your Qi into your Dantian, stop breathing for a moment.
Step 5, exhale.
After holding your breath for a certain amount of time, you can slowly breathe out the air you have sucked in. You can also let out a soft “Ah” sound.
Things to note in basic breathing technique:
You can practice your breathing, for the next 5-30 minutes, in accordance to your actual physical condition. Do a minimum of 9 times; 4 cycles is better, as each cycle can consist of 9 deep breaths or slow breaths.
After completing the last cycle, rub your palms 9 times. Gently rub the left side and right side of your face 9 times. Rub your ears 9 times, and rub your cervical vertebra 9 times. Then, move your 10 fingers, starting from your lower jaw and move upwards, tapping your head 9 times. Finally, massage your left and right kidneys 9 times with your palms simultaneously. Once you are familiar with this, you just need to rub your hands and face.
Lastly, I have to emphasize something. When you raise your head to inhale, you can silently chant “An”. When you are holding their breath, you can chant “Ah”. When you exhale,you can chant “Hom”.
Of course, only beginners would find it so troublesome. When you break through the basics, you will naturally understand the profoundness of this breathing technique.
