Chapter 16: The Last Kindness
Translator: Langshare Editor: Langshare
Seven or eight people were walking in the wilderness twenty kilometres outside the town.
“Damn it, and I didn’t know that kid was so bad!”
“You said it back then, and you said it was fine as long as he could know the way!”
“But I didn’t know that he could only do this.”
These people had experienced a tragic failure.
There were initially more than ten people, but now, half of them were gone.
“Stop!” A short man wearing a beret roared, “Forget it because we’re already failed.”
These people were from the capture team that had set out from the town a few days ago. When they had just started, everyone was in high spirits, but now they were discouraged, and almost everyone was injured.
…
“Holly, be good and stay at home.” Haman carried some things that others had sent over and left the house.
Holly nodded, put away his homework, and prepared to stand guard at the door.
He had just sat up from the ground and paused. Then he remembered that there was no longer a need to stand guard at home.
Even the one-eyed Wolf brought gifts to apologize. There was no one else coming to steal other than those who could not live on.
A few years before Holly appeared, Haman had already wandered in the wilderness.
At that time, he was just ten years old. He was not the current number one hunter in the town, nor was he a mutant.
At that time, he was just a child who lived on the remnants of the wild animals in the wilderness.
When he encounters any animals occasionally, he might be injured, even if he was a chicken.
In the wilderness, being injured was equivalent to death.
Haman carried a bag of food and looked at the brick house in front of him.
There was a red cloth hanging in front of the house.
It was the only pharmacy in the entire town.
“You finally remember me!” At the entrance of the pharmacy, an older man lying on a rocking chair was smiling.
This older man was the only doctor in the whole town.
No one knew how old he was this year.
He had grey hair, deep wrinkles, and a messy beard.
Hearing the old man’s words, Haman immediately walked over with a smile on his face and said, “Why not?”
“Even if I forget my name, I can’t forget you!”
If it weren’t for Tok, Haman would have died a few years ago.
If he died in the wilderness, his body would be eaten totally by the wild animals.
A few years ago, Haman came to come to him almost every day.
It was because his hunting skills had improved in recent years, and he was no longer injured, that he didn’t often come.
But once he could get something good, Haman would send some to Tok.
It was not that Dr Tok lacked food but that he was grateful.
At this moment, a man wearing a miner’s uniform came to the pharmacy.
“Dr Tok, I have been feeling unwell these days. I keep coughing, and this morning I even coughed up blood.”
The man looked pale, and he was coughing as he spoke.
Dr Tok stood up from the recliner and examined the man.
He then turned around and lay back down on the recliner again.
Seeing his action, the man understood.
Tok would only do this when he met someone he could not save.
“Doctor Tok!” The man looked even thinner and said anxiously, “Is there no other way?”
Doctor Tok did not say anything more. He just waved his hand and closed his eyes.
Seeing his reaction, the man did not say anything more.
He just turned around silently and gradually disappeared into the dust that was stirred up by the wind.
Seeing the man gradually disappear into the distance, Haman sighed in his heart.
“Is he hopeless?” Haman asked softly.
Doctor Tok opened his eyes and took a sip of the water beside him.
“It’s not that there’s no way. If he can live in the city and stay away from the mine, he can still be cured!”
Hearing this, Haman fell silent.
Not to mention entering the city, even if he had to stay away from the mine, this man wouldn’t be able to do it.
If he didn’t go to the mine, he would starve to death in a few days.
It wasn’t that this disease couldn’t be cured, but that either of these two conditions wasn’t something a miner could meet.
If he couldn’t do it, then he might as well not mention it.
It was the cruellest to give people hope and then deprive it of them.
It was probably Tok’s last kindness to directly declare that he could not be cured.
Haman placed the food in his hand in the pharmacy and squatted next to the recliner.
“At that time,” Haman looked at the dusky sky that was covered by the yellow sand and said, “Why were you so good to me?”
Tok sat up from the recliner, took out a cigarette, and lit a match on the sole of his shoe.
He puffed and said leisurely, “There’s no reason! I just tried those new drugs on you.”
All these years, Tok had only helped him once. And he was not the only one to test the new medicine.
Hearing this, Haman was not surprised. Instead, he was happy. He smiled and said. “No matter what, I still have to thank you.”
“Take off your clothes and let me check,” Tok said.
Hearing this, Haman was a little surprised.
However, based on his trust in Tok, Haman still took off his only shirt, revealing his bare upper body.
Looking at the smooth and clean body with different muscles, Tok smiled.
“It seems that you became a mutant!” Tok took a deep puff of his cigarette and put it out under his feet. “Put on your clothes.”
Haman put on his clothes, full of doubts.
Initially, his body was full of hideous scars, but after becoming a mutant, all the spots disappeared.
But Haman only guessed that this was because he was a mutant. He didn’t expect Tok to be so familiar with mutants.
Looking at Haman’s curious eyes, Dr Tok smiled and said, “Don’t think that I’m so strong. I’ve treated mutants before, but they don’t have any scars on their bodies.”
Sitting quietly beside the recliner, Haman hesitated and said, “Come with us to the city when it’s winter.”
Tok smiled and shook his head. “I’ve lived in this town for almost 30 years. There were a few doctors in this town before, but now I’m the only one.”
“If I go with you to the city, there won’t be any doctors in this town.”
“Moreover, I love this place. As long as you remember the medical skills I taught you, I’ll be satisfied.”
Suddenly, there was a riot outside. And someone said in surprise, “The capture team is back. Didn’t they go to Mount Roman? Why are they back now?”
“Yeah, and their guide Charlie is also missing!”
Haman suddenly raised his head. It took three days to get Mount Roman from the town. It was a little comfort to be back, but it would also take at least five days.
Moreover, they still had to catch the living dinosaur at Mount Roman. How could they come back today?
Suddenly, that guy appeared in Haman’s mind for some reason.
