Chapter 5: The Church

“How about it? If you catch one alive, I’ll give you double the price.” Chuck stroked his beard and said with a smile.
Haman thought carefully, shook his head and said, “That’s a dinosaur. It can bite us to death at any time. Today, the whole family of my neighboring aunt all died.”
Chuck was a little anxious and quickly held Haman’s hand.
“Come on, since you can kill it, it’s not that difficult to capture it alive.”
“I’m not refusing,” Haman said calmly..
“Then why?”
Haman looked at Chuck and grinned. “It’s so dangerous, and you have to pay me more!”
…
After they reached an agreement on price, Haman brought Holly to the church of the Dragon God in the market town.
This church was the cleanest and neatest place in the market town, and it was also the only place with a yard. It was located in the center of the market town.
The entire market town was built around the church.
Walking towards the church, you could see potatoes, soybeans and corn planted in the yard.
Initially, Haman thought that a place like the church should be planted with flowers and other plants.
But after all, there was not enough food in this era, so it was fortunate to have a place to grow some vegetables.
In addition, this priest was kind-hearted, and he would give some food to those who could not afford to eat from time to time.
The amount of relief money was given by the church was not enough.
So, Haman had a simple wish, and he wanted to let Holly become a priest when he grew up.
It was not that Haman respected the priest, but that it was safe and he could grow vegetables for himself after becoming a priest. Moreover, no one would steal anything, so it was pretty comfortable.
Generally speaking, Haman’s wish was straightforward.
However, it was not easy to join the church of the Dragon God, and you could not enter without too much knowledge.
Moreover, when he scrounged the priest’s class, he also heard the priest say that the teachings of the Church of the Dragon God were to kill all the dinosaurs.
“Is this a joke?”
Haman had lived in the wilderness for so many years and knew how many dinosaurs there were in nature.
The number of dinosaurs killed by humans was far less than the number of dinosaurs killing each other.
Holly took the tuition fees to the school. Haman could only squat on the wall. If he could not pay the tuition fees, he could not go to class, which was the rule.
It was even a privilege to attend the class on the wall to the priest.
The priest would sometimes tell the students how glorious the human civilization used to be.
To be honest, Mr. Haman had never seen that era. What he knew now was only some stories passed down by word of mouth.
These stories were likely to be wrong as they passed down.
Although they might not be reliable, Haman was still fascinated by them.
And although he didn’t know what the use of talking about the human past was.
There was still envy and some pride in his heart as he was listening to that glorious past.
Every day Haman would go hunting in the early morning till noon. In the afternoon, when Holly had classes, he would squat down and also attend.
Sometimes he would take the knowledge that he didn’t understand and didn’t hear clearly to ask Holly.
It annoyed Holly because if he couldn’t answer it, it meant he wasn’t learning well.
But Holly liked the feeling of learning together, so he was particularly attentive in every class.
In the classroom, the priest held a copy of “The Basics of Physics,” based on a collection of pre-cataclysm knowledge.
He held the book and looked down at the sleeping children, then at Haman, who was on the wall outside the window.
Then, he turned to Holly, who was the most eager to learn, and said, “Tell your brother to stand outside the classroom and study.”
“Thank you, Father!” Holly beamed.
…
There was only one priest in the church and no one else.
No one knew the name of the priest. Ever since they came to this town thirty years ago, everyone only called him a priest.
When someone asked his name, the priest only said, “I have devoted my life to the cause of The Church of the Dragon God. You don’t need to know my name.”
Sometimes Haman felt that what the priest said was different from what he had experienced in the wilderness, so that he would argue with Holly.
At first, Holly was always like everyone else, thinking that the priest knew everything.
But after Haman personally caught a wild beast in the wilderness that the priest said didn’t exist.
The Church of the Dragon God opened a church in the market town to train more talents.
The Church of the Dragon God would arrange for anyone good at Reading to go to the city.
But the people in the market town didn’t all think that way. Most of them just wanted to let their children learn, hoping to take over their small shop in the future.
After all, people were very realistic, and the cost of learning was very high.
Moreover, there were over a hundred market towns in Azure Dragon City. Still, only a few people could join the Church of the Dragon God every year.
Therefore, most people only sent their children here for a year to learn some accounting skills.
…
On the way home, Haman and Holly suddenly saw those people from the city.
There were about thirteen or fourteen of them. Half of them were wearing colourful and strange clothes, and the other half were wearing uniform clothes.
It seemed that they were mercenaries or soldiers from the city. No wonder they dared to come to the wilderness to catch living animals.
However, Haman didn’t think that these mercenaries from the city must be very powerful.
He had been in the wilderness for so long, but he hadn’t seen any mercenaries. These people probably hadn’t even experienced actual combat.
Actually, from Haman’s perspective, the strongest among these people should be the little guy sitting in the car.
Shaking his head, he was about to leave when he heard Chuck’s loud voice. “If you want to go to the wilderness, you have to turn to Haman. And it will be difficult for you to find what you want without him. There is a herd of beasts in the wilderness outside.”
One of the mercenaries sneered and said, “A herd of beasts is nothing. We have guns in our hands, and they are mighty.”
Haman was stunned for a moment. “Would the herds of beasts be afraid of guns? Could it be the same gun as the dragon-slaying spike?” He had never seen such a weapon before, so he did not know if what they said was correct or not.
Then another mercenary asked, “Where is Haman? We don’t need him to have any good skills. We just need him to be able to find the prey.”
“Well, Haman is a good hunter in our town. There are no roads in the wilderness that he doesn’t know. It’s right for you to turn to him.”
Chuck smiled and said, “He’s the most capable person though he was mentally ill.”
Hearing this, Haman turned around and left. “Is Chuck also attending your class…”
Holly quickly said, “Brother, Chuck is not wrong.”
Haman frowned. He didn’t want to pay attention to this matter in the first place. But he didn’t expect Chuck to recommend him to this inexplicable capture team.
