[Sudden Emergency]
With the long vacation over, classes would finally restart in earnest.
In the morning, students of the same year as me and Tayte were gathered in the auditorium for the element examination.
It was quite spacious and the ceiling was high. Plus, it was furnished with quite a few ceiling fans. It was much more luxurious than I had expected.
“Hmm, it sure is spacious.”
After entering the auditorium with Tayte, I found the inside was filled with hubbub.
It appeared that there were students who had just arrived this morning seeing that some were seemingly having a reunion in high spirits, whereas some other students appeared to be holding both expectations and anxieties for the upcoming element examination and were busy discussing the topic among themselves.
How nice.
It felt like a congregation of youth in here.
I wasn’t gonna lose to them. In this academy, I would—
“Good morning, Lord Barrett!”
“““““Good morning, Lord Barrett!!”””””
“…………”
Following the loud, military salute-like greeting, everything was destroyed.
All the chatter and laughter vanished from the room, only to be replaced by fear and tension as if the place had turned into the frontline of the battlefield.
It sure was hard to get used to this treatment.
Just as I sighed and was about to reply,
“Morning, Barrett, Tayte!”
The one greeting both of us was Cornell, who was with us back at the Divine Gift Ceremony.
At that time, I became friends with Cornell through Tayte.
Cornell was a cheerful person from the start, and now she knew that I had changed. Hence, she hadn’t hesitated to greet me casually.
“T-that girl!?”
“Oh no, she’s dead…”
“Just what is she thinking…”
The surrounding students looked at Cornell with pale faces.
It was only natural.
After all, if it was the usual Barrett, he would definitely make Cornell drop out right away.
――But of course, I would do nothing of the sort.
In fact, I welcomed Cornell’s attitude.
““Morning, Cornell.””
Tayte and I returned the greeting.
Then,
“H-huh? Lord Barrett… isn’t angry?”
“Speaking of which, he’s accompanied by Lady Tayte today.”
“They were together at the cafeteria, too… has he had a change of heart?”
A hubbub of a different kind from the previous one wrapped up the auditorium.
After a while, teachers came and explained how the element examination would be conducted. It was not particularly complicated. The students would be called over to the stage in turn, and then an examiner would check on them, that was all. It took about five minutes per student.
After the examination was completed, the students were to have lunch, be divided into each class according to their attributes in the afternoon, and then participate in a mock battle to get their abilities assessed. That was apparently the custom here.
However, right before the examination began—
“Oh, right. Before we begin, I have an announcement for all of you,” said Mr. Walter, the head of year in charge of us and was characterized by his skinhead and burly built, out of the blue.
“Is there a problem…?”
“Don’t tell me, are the mock battles canceled?”
“It’s not raining, so that can’t be it, right?”
Tayte, Cornell, and I discussed what might be the problem.
“Cough,” the head of year cleared his throat in a deliberate way before starting to explain, “The gentlemen from the order of knights scheduled to visit today had abruptly received an expedition mission, hence their visit was canceled. But rest assured, as the mock battles would still be held.”
I see.
That was a shame.
It was a good opportunity for the students who were planning to join the order of knights to show off their mettle. Especially Raul, who supposedly would be taken as an apprentice by the Holy Knight Klaus—
“Ah…”
At that point, my thoughts came to a complete halt.
This was bad.
Currently, there was no way for Raul, who couldn’t wield the Demon Sword properly, to beat me. In order for Raul to awaken in the future, the Holy Knight Klaus was absolutely indispensable.
However… why did things take a different turn from the original storyline?
Maybe—or rather, most likely, the cause was me. Well, I’d done all sorts of stuff that wasn’t in accordance with the original storyline, so perhaps it was only to be expected that such an irregularity to occur.
But I couldn’t leave the protagonist Raul just like that.
The best result for both me and Raul… if I couldn’t come up with something to that end, my future school life would take a huge impact.
The time limit was roughly 2 hours.
By then, I have to come up with a solution!
