[Hated Hero, Inviting the Childhood Friend-Saintess]
As it turned out, (former)Barrett’s relationship problem was not only limited to women but people in general.
Obtaining the Holy Sword only worsened the condition. Scoundrels would pack around me, so I had to be even more careful. Though it’d save me a lot of trouble if all of them were as overt as Wade.
What I especially had to watch out for were guys like Jarvis.
After all, he was one of the members of the hero party, and also Barrett’s right-hand man.
…Perhaps, even Mr. Timmons worked with (former)Barrett behind the scenes. To unravel these mysteries surrounding him, I was waiting for the result of my three maids’ investigation.
The day after the joint practical, we would be having only morning classes.
Apparently, there were days like these from time to time at Astor Academy—but usually, students would be given prior notice. This time, however, it came out of nowhere—we were only informed in the morning of the very day.
They were going to be holding a teacher meeting, they said. I bet the agenda was about Raul and Rick’s berserk incidents. Considering that they were assembling all teachers—they got new leads on the incidents, perhaps?
“Barrett? Is something the matter?”
“—! Ah, n-no, not at all.”
…I was curious about what the teachers were discussing, but for now, I should concentrate on the Horticulture Committee’s activities. I couldn’t make Tayte worry, after all.
The morning classes had ended, and Tayte and I made our way to the Horticulture Committee.
There we found the chairman Hans, Cornell, and…
“Hello, Barrett.”
“Hey there, Melia.”
…Melia.
Having straightened up my relationships with the girls whom (former)Barrett had hit on and improved my relationship with my fiancée Tayte significantly, my relationships with my classmates had changed dramatically as well.
Though Melia’s lover(?) and the class rep, Kleine, still didn’t seem to trust me fully, I’d become able to talk naturally with my other classmates.
The biggest change was that some of them no longer addressed me with ‘lord’ like Melia just now. It made me feel like my hard work had paid off, really.
“These pots have such nice patterns, Tayte.”
“You bought it with Barrett in the royal capital, right?”
“Mhm♪.”
Cornell, Melia, and Tayte were hard at work with their hands covered in mud. Each of them had changed into activewear, suitable for the activities of the Horticulture Committee. Therefore, they didn’t need to worry about getting dirty.
“Isn’t it a wonderful sight?” Chairman Hans walked up to me as I was observing the three. “A group of beautiful girls tending flowerbeds without a whit of care about getting themselves dirty…”
“I-I suppose.”
Hans was strangely excited, overcame with emotions.
This guy’s background seemed to be amazing as well, but… well, in a way, the person himself was amazing, too.
“By the way, Barrett.” Hans, having been watching Tayte and the others with a fascinated expression, suddenly turned to me, his face dead serious. The extreme rise and fall of his mood sure were surprising.
“About the social gathering on the next days off—have you invited her?” Hans pressed with strangely strong pressure.
Of the upcoming two days off, I was planning to spend one visiting the mansion of the Ehrenbergs, whereas the other participating in the social gathering Hans just mentioned.
Social gathering—or a ball, essentially.
However, it was not a formal occasion that nobles usually went to; it was more of a student gathering. It also served as an opportunity for the senior and new students to get to know each other. Apparently, there were talks about cancellation due to the recent incidents, but various reasons forced it to not be made public (probably related to nobles), so it was going to be held, anyway.
I planned to participate in this ball with Tayte.
The day prior to my visit to the House of Ehrenberg would be dedicated to preparing for it.
…But I just realized that I’d forgotten something important.
I—hadn’t officially invited Tayte to the ball.
I mean, Marina and the others were…
『The ball this year will be completely different from last year!』
『I can’t wait for it-meow!』
『Let’s have the painters supported by Master to paint the state of the ball, and have it decorate the mansion.』
…too excited.
Honestly, whatever happened to the investigation on the berserk incidents, I wondered?
“Have you? Or have you not?”
“Ah, well, uh… I-I will invite her after this.”
Hans pressed his face closer to me, and I answered as such.
I was quite pathetic, even if I do say so myself.
――And so, as we were on our way back from the committee, I invited Tayte: “Let’s go to the ball together.”
“~~~~!” Tayte started crying.
I had a hard time calming her down, but she appeared to be elated, and that was all that mattered.
…I had to get Marina and the others to teach me how to dance.
