Zhao Yin watched as Chen Mu started to walk away. Just as Zhao Yin was about to throw in a few gleeful insults, Chen Mu turned around and headed straight for him.
For unknown reasons, Zhao Yin felt a hint of numbing coldness within his heart. Nevertheless, he straightened himself and came face to face with Chen Mu.
It was recess time and many people were walking up and down the corridor. Noticing Chen Mu’s actions, many of them turned to watch.
“You’re Zhao Yin, right? Did you say you could beat ten players like me?” asked Chen Mu with a smile.
“Ye- Yeah. Why? You have a problem with that?” Zhao Yin replied Chen Mu; his eyes were fixated on him.
“It’s nothing. It’s just a coincidence that I’m participating in the cybercafe tournament you mentioned just now. I hope you’ll be able to win the match with only one little me in it,” Chen Mu said. Chen Mu had never started a fight before. Hence, Chen Mu chose to simply invite Zhao Yin to challenge him as he was unsure what was the most effective way to start a fight.
“What? Chen Mu is joining the cybercafe tournament?”
“Seriously? He’s a high-flyer who plays League and participates in tournaments? I feel ashamed as a flunkie.”
“Support Zhao Yin and watch him beat Chen Mu into a pulp!”
Chen Mu was not a people person and rarely hung out with people. Being a loner, his popularity stemmed from his insanely high grades. On the contrary, Zhao Yin had a lot more friends in which a majority of them thought that it was impossible for high-flyers like Chen Mu to be better in League of Legends than Zhao Yin. It would be illogical!
Under the crowd’s scrutiny, there was no way for Zhao Yin to back down in fear despite not knowing anything about Chen Mu’s abilities. After all, they were high schoolers—they were at the peak of their energetic youth. If they chose to back off when provoked, they would not be able to walk with their heads lifted for months.
Zhao Yin hurriedly accepted Chen Mu’s challenge and promised to meet him in the tournament the coming weekend. Then, both parties returned to their usual business. Nevertheless, the news traveled fast among the Year 3 Senior students.
“Heck, what are you thinking, Chen Mu? That dude has a team with an average of one thousand five hundred ELO points. How are you going to beat him? How are you going to get people to form a squad?” asked Lu Ren in concern.
“It’ll be fine. It seems like it’s time for my grand entrance. I, a top League player who had retired for good, it’s time for me to return to the battlefield.” Zhuo Xiaobai placed both his hands on the back of his head. His head was slightly raised as he looked at the sky. He emanated the aura of an otherworldly powerhouse.
“There’s no need. I already have a team. The reason why I didn’t attend the self-study session last night was because I was practicing,” Chen Mu explained.
Upon hearing that, Zhuo Xiaobai retracted his pose instantly and ran over. He said, “What the heck? How’s that possible? There isn’t a player stronger than me in our class. Are you planning on bringing those few girls who wrote you love letters to the tournament?”
“Get lost, you. Anyway, don’t worry about it. I’m confident that I can do it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have said it in the first place.” After saying that, Chen Mu calmly walked back to his seat and began reading his English book.
The rest of the group exchanged glances with one another. Since there was nothing else they could do, they returned to their seats too.
Meanwhile, Zhao Yin was feeling completely flustered in his class. Why had he sensed nothing but confidence from Chen Mu? Was Chen Mu truly a good player?
Was a high-flyer who did not know how to play League of Legends a bad rival in love?
It would not do. Zhao Yin was determined to investigate the matter. He could not imagine what would happen if Chen Mu turned out to be a good player.
Zhao Yin contacted a few friends and got them to find Chen Mu’s ID. He finally received word during his second period of class and was grateful for his massive network of friends.
“ILookOrdinary? Well, at least you know that!” Zhao Yin spat venomously before keying in Chen Mu’s ID into Penguin Group’s official League search software.
Zhao Yin was dumbfounded when he saw the information that popped up. His initial shock stemmed from seeing Chen Mu’s win rate pie chart which was entirely green. After scrutinizing the details, he realized that Chen Mu’s matches were mostly against AI, and Chen Mu had not played more than twenty blind pick matches. Although Chen Mu was the victor in all of them, Zhao Yin thought that he could achieve such a feat himself if he matched up against players who had yet reached the maximum level.
Therefore, Zhao Yin breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed like the high-flyer had a big head. Although Chen Mu’s win rate was high in blind pick matches, ranked games were a completely different story compared to normal games. Each player would want to win in a ranked game and would use their best champion. Therefore, even in matches at around seven to eight hundred ELO points, good players could get accidentally overthrown, what more players who still did not qualify for rank.
The System had made adjustments to Chen Mu’s match history so that nobody would discover any anomaly in it. How else was the System supposed to hide the 30x experience buff from the public? Therefore, it could only tell others that Chen Mu managed to reach the maximum level via VS AI games and that he had only begun to be matched against maximum level players recently.
Zhao Yin finally breathed a sigh of relief and started to look forward to the tournament the coming weekend. When it came to studying, not even ten Zhao Yins could score more marks than one Chen Mu. Nevertheless, they were talking about League here—at the very least, Zhao Yin was one of the top five players in his year at school.
He could not help but laugh out loud when he thought about it and was instantly caught by his teacher who was standing on the rostrum. As a result, he was punished to stand for the entire period.
This led to more annoyance on Zhao Yin’s part. Internally, he swore that he would bully Chen Mu as much as possible to unleash all of his anger.
After recess, Zhao Yin started to spread the news about how he was going to compete against Chen Mu among his gaming circles without holding back. Borrowing the juiciness from the fact that Chen Mu was the top student in his academic year, it became a pretty heated topic.
Everyone wanted to witness someone they looked up to as a legendary study god get completely beat up in a game. Very few people wanted him to be someone who was completely well-rounded as the thought of it was too much of a trigger. A large majority of people stubbornly believed that when the Lord closes a door, he opens a window. Only such a thing would be just.
Gaming had always been the domain of flunkies. One should not join it if they were a high-flyer. If one chooses to come anyway, they should be ready to be beaten up into a pulp. Such a thing was only reasonable.
The tournament blew up to be quite a significant piece of news among the students. Plenty of students decided to watch the tournament at the cybercafe that coming weekend. However, the same news did not stir up as much in Chen Mu’s class. That was because, other than Chen Mu, the true nerds around him in his class had no clue what League of Legends was. The only thought they had in their heads was how to overtake Chen Mu in the upcoming monthly exam and become the top student in class.
In the following few days Chen Mu had left before the tournament, Chen Mu continued to attend classes as usual. Nevertheless, the would retreat to the cybercafe during his self-study session at night. However, even though he had reached the maximum level of thirty, he was still not allowed to play ranked games!
The System had given him another mission—to cultivate his skills through blind pick matches and achieve a win rate high enough for a queue that could last more than thirty minutes. Only then could he play ranked games.
This was because the blind pick mode had its own set of hidden ELO points that matched up pro players against pro players and noobies against noobies.
Therefore, only when Chen Mu could no longer be matched up against players of his level in blind pick games, would he be allowed to play ranked games.
Naturally, any ordinary player would have to bear the torment of getting overpowered by Chen Mu.
Chen Mu was not aware of the standard he was at. The only thing he understood was that his opponents always presented him with plenty of opportunities for him to take advantage of. There were so many variations of ‘getting close to farm CS with a health bar so low they could be killed with a single move.’
Therefore, Chen Mu was able to gain an income of three hundred bucks very easily. In a single week, he managed to play more than fifty rounds of blind pick and achieved a win rate of eighty-nine percent.
The only exception was when Chen Mu intentionally fed his opponent. However, the moment the same fed player left his teammates and brought along a wave of minions, the other four players would queue up to present Chen Mu with their heads. Chen Mu, with his full item set, could not stop the enemy team from getting decimated since they had split up. He basically won that way each time.
A little bit more than a minute had passed since he chose to start the queue.
In the blink of an eye, the weekend beckoned. Everyone who knew about Zhao Yin and Chen Mu had spread the news around the year 3 Senior gaming circle. It would be apt to say that a large majority of people greatly anticipated the tournament.
On the day of the event, the cybercafe experienced an unprecedented number of visitors. All of the seats in the cybercafe were filled with the exception of a row of advanced computers that were meant for the tournament.
The slogan of the tournament was set to run across the electronic banner at the entrance of the cybercafe.
The first annual League of Legends tournament, ‘Sky Galaxy Cup’, was finally officiated! The champion would be awarded a thousand renminbi. The first runner-up would get five hundred, while the second runner-up would get a hundred. Everyone was welcome to enter!
