Chapter 10: Her repugnant past

Wen Xi walked over to her balcony.
Leaning against the railing, she gazed at the night view and let her thoughts wander. There was a constant, gentle breeze, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to carry her sadness away.
Her biological had parents married for politics, and since they had never actually loved each other, they had divorced rather rashly.
She clearly remembered their last conversation, which she watched helplessly from behind the door.
Her usually gentle mother became violent and fierce that night, arguing with her father, “What are we going to do with Xixi? I can’t take her with me!”
“I can’t keep her either, Kexin will be upset!”
“Send her to your father!”
“That’s out of the question! If I did that, he would only get angry and try to fix me!”
After that night, she was no longer an innocent child – she had become sensitive to her surroundings, and obedient. She volunteered herself to go and live with her grandparents.
Then, one day, Wei Kexin arrived at her grandparent’s house with Wen Qing. She would greet her kindly, tried to cheer her up, and help her with her with her school work.
Plus, Wen Qing would always come to play with her, so she never felt lonely.
Over time, as she slowly recovered from her depression after her parents’ divorce, Wen Xi started to laugh again.
She cherished Wei Kexin for her the motherly love she’d shown her. However, naive as she was, she didn’t see that they hadn’t shown her kindness from their hearts; they did so only to win her affection – so that she would be obedient to them. She was merely a puppet to them.
Later on, when Wen Qing took interest in being Mrs. Nan, she deliberately let Wen Xi run into her tryst with her husband to upset her, hoping she’d argue, and annoy Nan Xunchuan so that he would divorce her.
But he didn’t.
He locked Wen Xi up after the incident and didn’t let her out until she stopped fussing.
Wen Xi, now calmed down, decided to install a secret camera at home to record evidence for a divorce.
Unexpectedly, she caught Wei Kexin and Nan Xunchuan’s father kissing and taking their clothes off instead.
She took the video to her father, but he only slapped her and scolded her for her nonsensical accusation.
It turned out that Wei Kexin had gotten to complaining before she did. She accused Wen Xi of being mischievous, finding actors to synthesize a video to make a spoof of her stepmother.
Her father had been seriously ill at the time. It didn’t help that Wei Kexin had also been in her father’s ear, saying bad things about her to make her father feel disappointed in her, so he chose to believe Wei Kexin instead of Wen Xi.
Wen Xi was desperate; so much so that she had somehow came up with a plan to kill both Wen Qing and herself.
She thought that would be the end of everything, never expecting that she would go back in time to when she was nineteen – what a fate.
Now that she knew her stepmother well enough, Wen Xi’s gut told her that the cause of her father’s illness was not stress from years of work, but rather, Wei Kexin.
She kept in her mind that she would stop Wei Kexin from poisoning him this time.
Although she was frustrated, she tried to push the feeling away as she went back to her room.
That night, Wen Xi’s dreams kept her from sleeping soundly.
She dreamed about her past first. After that, she dreamt about lying on an operating table, and beside her was a surgeon with He Yan’s face.
He looked at her calmly, asked her to relax, and told her that she was stronger than she thought.
When Wen Xi woke up, she still remembered He Yan’s eyes in her dream; tranquil and reassuring.
She had no idea why she dreamt about him, or how he was doing.
As Wen Xi stared at the clouds outside her window, she suddenly remembered that she hadn’t told He Yan that she had arrived home safely, which was awfully rude of her.
She asked her father for his number over breakfast, and sent him a short text.
[I’m home. Thank you so much. From, Wen Xi]
She didn’t get a reply immediately. It wasn’t surprising, since she knew that he was quite a busy person. She would be surprised if He Yan had actually replied right after he’d received it.
Surprisingly, his reply came just as she entered the gate of her film school.
