Chapter 18 – Backing Off
After taking a bit of a walk around the yard, she walked in.
Wei Kexin had been intently watching the news on the TV, and most of them were all over the topic of Wen Xi’s ghost singer controversy. They even had footage of her trying to escape the reporters, though the mask she had on managed to hide her face pretty well.
Kexin herself was now panicking more than ever before, making phone calls to get people to deal with the situation as she fixed her eyes to the screen.
Five minutes had passed before she noticed Wen Xi.
The instant she did though, a flash of rage appeared on her face before she quickly suppressed it after a couple of seconds. She came over and asked about the wounds.
“I’m alright, mom. How is it with sis?”
“They’re taking care of it now, but did you get followed when you came back?” Kexin was very worried.
Wen Xi held onto her mother’s hands, “Don’t worry, nobody saw me.”
“That’s good, that’s good.”
“How are you planning on solving this, mom?”
“Of course we’ll deny it to the end. Remember that the media didn’t catch you singing, so I’ll have Qing give a live performance online where you’ll be singing beside her off camera. The whole thing will blow over soon.”
Wen Xi frowned, “Mom, I don’t think that’ll work. Almost everyone thinks sis has a ghost singer, and a simple video wouldn’t be able to solve it. If she gets into a situation where she needs to sing in public again- and if I’m not there- it’d be the end of everything.”
Kexin went deep into thought, and Wen Xi took the chance to push on, “Might as well take the chance to admit the ghost singing- as long as her attitude is good, the fans would still accept her. After all, sis has an acting background, not a professional singing one. An apology would make them like her more.”
With that, Kexin fixed her eyes on her as if seeing through her intentions.
Wen Xi met her eyes, not avoiding her gaze at all. Seeing no fear or guilt, it seemed to Kexin that she was still as innocent as always.
Kexin slowly put away her doubts and nodded, “Looks like we have no choice.”
“I’ll go back to my room first, then. I’m not feeling so good.”
Kexin gave a wave of her hand, “Go.”
After Wen Xi had left, Kexin furiously threw all the silverware on the table onto the floor with a swipe of her arm.
She felt like she had just suffered the most horrible thing possible- while she knew that Wen Xi’s stubbornness of going to the live performance was what caused everything, she had been cooperative from the beginning to end. The blame couldn’t really be placed on her, nor did she think that Wen Xi even had the guts and mind to plot stuff like that!
And so, she couldn’t yell at her even if she wanted to- she could only hold down her rage.
The next day, Wen Qing made a public apology to calm things down, saying that she had a ghost singer because her voice was ruined unexpectedly. In order to not let everyone down, she had to find someone with a similar voice to do the singing, but announced that she would focus on her acting career from now on because of her body problems. She’d leave the music industry for good.
Online, everyone started talking- Wen Qing’s named had been hurt, and she wouldn’t enjoy the success she used to have. As for Wen Xi, she had successfully escaped the clutches of her sister.
Wen Qing’s team found out the ‘mastermind’ behind the whole thing- the security cameras caught Tai Ruoer starting the whole thing.
Wen Qing commanded people to go get gossip on Ruoer, wanting to deal a blow on her to ease her own suffering.
The two started fighting a more intense battle in the shadows.
Wen Xi though, didn’t care about that. For her, there were only two important things right now. One, she had to get out of this engagement. Two, she had to change schools. The marriage issue relied on good timing, and what she needed to do now was practise her acting and increase her acting knowledge.
Five days later, she saw on the news that the ZH disease had been successfully defeated with everyone cheering over the victory. She smiled a genuine smile, relaxing.
Two days after that, she was informed by Teacher Liang to go see her at school. The results turned out to be good, and she was now able to transfer.
After spending time there, she returned home at dusk only to see Wei Kexin and Wen Qing’s blood-related grandmother, Zhou Ling. Zhou Ling had been travelling, and had just come back these last few days.
The two were sitting in the living room, worried.
Kexin was holding onto her phone and frowning, moving back and forth until she heard someone come through the door. It was Wen Xi, changing her shoes as she entered, and Kexin walked over instantly.
“Xixi, don’t put the shoes away just yet, go to the He house and get your sister in. She’s meant to meet up with He Yan, but his grandmother won’t let her inside!”
“What?”
He Yan was back?
