Chapter 20 – Another Awkward and Rushed Conversation
The man didn’t have the same dark blue face mask from the other day beneath his familiar, yet cryptic eyes.. His nose was sharp and tall, his lips thin and red. His eyebrows and brow were high, and his eye sockets were deep- all his facial features were similar to that of a caucasian’s in terms of geometry and structure, along with the gentleness of an asian face. In combination, he looked strong yet also elegant, and could be said to fulfill everyone’s sense of aesthetics.
He had mixed blood, with a French mother and a Chinese father. His face had inherited their best features.
Wen Xi stood there blankly, they were both in silence as seconds passed. Just that moment, though, was enough to send her heartbeat up.
It might’ve been because she’d just did something bad, or it might have been because she was seeing He Yan’s face for the first time, and at such a close distance… She stood there, completely frozen and responseless.
The man was slightly intrigued, though it was hidden in his calm face. A dog leash was tied around his wrist, and as his long legs stepped forward, so did the german shepherd.
As the two got closer to her, He Yan’s large and tall frame blocked almost all light until he eventually stood right in front of her.
Standing against the light, his face blurred into a darker shade, and his features and intentions were even less clear than before. Even so, Wen Xi’s nervousness did not fade.
Instinctively, she moved backwards but her foot twisted a little. Her eyes widened as she realized that she was about to fall to the ground before reaching out to grab at the man before her.
He Yan grabbed her hand steadily, stopping her fall.
His dry hand was warm, and that warmth passed from her fingers all the way to her heart. It made her panic a little as she pulled away.
With his palm emptied all of a sudden, He Yan, still looking calm, kept his eyes on the white-faced little girl in front of him.
“Long time no see.”
His voice was fresh and deep, like a warm cup of tea in summer heat.
The night breeze came lightly, and silently parted the strands of hair in front of Wen Xi’s face, brushing past her eyes and slightly itching them.
Due to her nervousness, she subconsciously gripped her hands tightly behind her and swallowed.
Squeezing her palm to relax in order to make herself look as natural as possible, “It’s been a long time, what a coincidence you’re here too!”
The man raised his eyes and looked at the building behind Wen Xi, “Not really. This is my house.”
Wen Xi pushed back her hair strands as she forced on a stiff smile, “Ah, I see… I just remembered that I have something to do, I’ll be going first.”
With a curt nod, she turned and walked to her car.
“Woof!” The dog barked at her from behind.
She subconsciously walked faster, but the german shepherd still caught up and blocked her way, wagging its tail as it forced her back in her steps. As she stumbled back, she bumped into a solid wall behind her, but there was a warmth that spread from the impact.
Before her, the dog still had its tongue out blocking her path- its face was not exactly the friendliest dog she had ever seen.
Wen Xi couldn’t help but wipe her forehead before walking to the side carefully.
At this time, a human figure bent down beside her and stopped the dog, the warmth of his body leaving, much to Wen Xi’s relief.
Lightly ruffling the dog’s head, “What a surprise. Battlesong likes you- he usually never lets the opposite gender come near.”
Wen Xi was a bit nervous, and didn’t know how to reply. All she could think about was how she helped Wen Qing barge into his house.
Getting caught doing something like that was more than just a little embarrassing.
The dog started moving towards her at that moment, and she backed off on instinct.
He Yan pulled at the collar of the dog as he looked at her, “Scared?”
Wen Xi nodded slowly.
He Yan stood up and made a gesture to Battlesong. The dog turned away and ran for the gate, though it remembered to turn around to give her one more look as if it was sad it had to leave.
He Yan looked at the girl beside him, “Is the wound okay?”
The sudden question made Wen Xi tense up a little. For just an instant she thought that he would ask about Wen Qing. But then, she relaxed, “Thanks to your care, it’s almost healed.”
She held her head down as she said that- it was the only way she could talk to him without having panic attacks.
He Yan leaned down in one smooth action, his eyebrows questioning, “Are you really afraid of me or something?”
Wen Xi jumped, and subconsciously raised her head, her cheeks red from the nervousness, “Not at all.”
She gathered her courage and clenched her jaw, looking at him, deep into his eyes, “Sorry for what happened just now.”
