The saying was real. The things you feared most would come true.
This was the last thing she wanted to happen, and memories of her shameful moments flashed in her mind.
She cleared her throat lightly and turned to face He Yan, giving him a smile suggesting this was a welcomed outcome for her. “Didn’t think I’d meet you here, Mister He. What a coincidence.”
He Yan handed her the hat. “Yeah, it is.”
Wen Xi took the hat and nodded. “Thanks.”
Her eyes looked around. She couldn’t keep eye contact with this man for more than three seconds.
Suddenly, a shadow loomed over the top of her head.
Wen Xi raised her eyes and her pupils dilated, her eyelashes moving in the wind as she kept her eyes on the tall figure that had moved closer to look at her all of a sudden.
She saw her own panicked look inside his eyes, as well as his curiosity.
His nose was tall, and his face was defined and chiseled; handsome but also determined. And those eyes- at that moment, they were as sharp as a sword, as if his gaze would pierce right through her.
The light breeze swept past, and the red wishing paper started to bristle in the wind around Wen Xi, scratching her skin. Her heart wouldn’t be able to take much more of this.
“Mr… Mr. He, what’s up with you?” She couldn’t help but take a small step back from how close he was.
He Yan straightened himself, his eyes playful, but serious at the same time. “With the way you avoid my eyes, you seem to actually be afraid of me.” He smiled. “Do I really look that scary?”
Wen Xi honestly shook her head. “It’s not like that.
Worried that He Yan would press the question further, she raised her eyes and looked into his, taking the initiative to change the topic. “Did you like the compensation gift yesterday?”
He Yan didn’t say anything but looked at the black phone in his hand.
Wen Xi looked as well. “Is this the one I bought?”
“Good taste.” He Yan said.
Hearing the praise, Wen Xi’s heart skipped a beat, though she kept herself calm and composed. She didn’t ask about the second gift.
As she lowered her eyes, she saw a praying charm in He Yan’s left hand- it must’ve been from the temple.
“Are you a Buddhist, Mr. He?”
He Yan’s eyes looked at a piece of wishing paper that the wind blew his way. He seemed to be thinking of something. “Buddhist or whatever, having a belief is a good thing. There are many times it can support you and keep you going without fear.”
Wen Xi couldn’t help but remember what she’d suffered in her past life. She didn’t have any beliefs then, only one wish; she wanted the person who loved her to be happy with her.
Her lips tugged a bit, into a smile to hide the sadness in her eyes.
“Don’t believe me?” He Yan asked.
Wen Xi shook her head and took a few steps forward. “It’s not that, I just remembered something. Mr. He, do you think humans can fight fate?”
He thought about the question for a few seconds. “Do you have something you’re unhappy about?”
Wen Xi smiled, shaking her head. “It’s nothing, just fretting over things.”
To her, this sort of stuff about her past life was something she’d never tell anyone. All of her most pitiful memories were there, and she didn’t want anyone laughing at them.
Her phone vibrated, and she took it out. It was a message from Wei Kexin’s, telling her to go back.
She looked at He Yan. “My family’s calling me, I have to go.”
With that, she walked past him.
“Wen Xi.”
The deep voice sounded, and Wen Xi turned back.
He stood straight and tall, and his face well defined.
“I don’t believe in Buddhism- I believe in myself.”
