Chapter 43: Good Guy and Bad Guy
He Yan didn’t change his pace, walking steadily as usual.
“I didn’t say that.”
Without much of a choice, she had to grab his arm to stop him.
He stopped looking at her from the side. His eyes were calm.
Wen Xi composed herself before speaking. “You heard the voice message from earlier, right?”
Silence.
Wen Xi took that as a yes. “You’re sure that Muyun is planning something by telling me to go?”
With intensity in her voice, she strengthened the hold had on He Yan’s arm as well.
Her eyes locked onto his gaze, not blinking for even a second, not letting any of his expressions escape.
As the two looked at each other, she could see traces of humor in his eyes, easing the atmosphere.
“I can’t say for sure whether she has good intentions or not, but in any other situation, no one would choose a hotel as a place to talk, not with that many options. Plus, it’s at night, too.”
Wen Xi blinked, not being able to react in time.
“There are a lot of bad people in this world. Some fight in the light and others use tricks in the dark. It’s not a bad thing to be a bit more careful.”
Wen Xi was silent for two seconds before suddenly asking him a question. “What about you then? To me, you’re a stranger as well, but you’ve helped me again and again. Shouldn’t I think of these aids as an ulterior motive- ‘fighting in the light’?”
Right now, she was going all out, and her eyes were defensive.
It didn’t sound proper and was being quite rude, but she couldn’t stop herself. She’d been wondering this for a long time already.
He Yan looked at her, still with that same expression. “How you read it isn’t important- what’s important is whether or not you’re reading it correctly. If you misidentify the good people as bad guys, you’ll be the one with loss.”
“You’re saying you’re a good guy?”
He smiled a bit. “Good and evil are just a matter of contrast. The people on your side will always be your good guys.”
“Then what’s the motivation behind standing on my side?” Wen Xi wasn’t letting up.
He Yan took a second before suddenly pressing down on her, his handsome face closing in with a hint of playfulness in his eyes. “Why do you like to talk back so much?”
His voice was light, like a feather that brushed against her heart.
Looking at the slight frown in her brow, Wen Xi already felt his scent bearing down on her, though she had already been filtering that out from the tension.
She realized that her hand was still tightly gripping his arm, and because he’d moved closer, it suddenly felt much more intimate.
Her face froze, and she let go right away. He straightened up as well.
Wen Xi felt there wasn’t anywhere to put her arms, and her tongue was tied.
He Yan was pretty calm though. He looked at the house. “Let’s go.”
Wen Xi, blushing, tried to hold down her feeling of regret.
She had asked something she shouldn’t have.
He Yan would’ve told her of his bad intentions in her past life if he had had any in the first place. The facts told her he wasn’t that type of person.
The him in her past life… He was in grave danger as well. She wondered what had happened.
Thinking of that, she frowned.
She should find a way to tell him that the Origin Tower would be attacked by terrorists, about how he’d be heavily injured… right?
But who would believe her without proof?
A small figure appeared in front of them, a smile on her face.
“Jinsheng, Miss Wen, you’ve come back.”
Wen Xi looked back, nodding to Peimi. She’d already turned away, though, or, more accurately, she’d never really looked at her.
“Let’s go in. Grandma’s already throwing a tantrum, complaining about you two being so slow.” Peimi said to He Yan.
Wen Xi realized that the Peimi now only saw He Yan. No one else.
