Chapter 5: It was you

He Yan dried his hands with a towel, turned around, and picked her up again.
Wen Xi instinctively grabbed onto his white coat. She could see his chin from under his medical mask, and she could see that he had not shaved in a while. But of course, it was hard to maintain things like this in such a situation.
She looked away to conceal her shy eyes. “Where… are we going?”
He Yan remained silent. Still carrying Wen Xi in his arms, he passed through a curtain and entered into the back room. It was a simple but clean room, with a suitcase and some men’s items on the table. This must have been his temporary bedroom. He Yan placed her on the bed, even though her clothes were covered in dirt from being in the forest.
“No more patients here. Are you happy?” He looked at her condescendingly.
Wen Xi licked her lips. “But… this is your bedroom.”
“Why, are you bothered by the way I smell?” He said, raising his eyebrows.
“No, I just don’t want to inconvenience you.”
“If it’s not an inconvenience to you, why would I, a man, mind?” His eyes creased at the corners as if he were smiling.
Wen Xi was speechless. There were only a few beds, after all, and saying anything more would make it seem like she was complaining, making her seem ignorant.
“Don’t worry, I will sleep on the floor.” He added to his previous comment.
That made Wen Xi uncomfortable somehow. She wanted to explain to him that she wasn’t offended, but he had already walked over to his suitcase. He picked out a clean summer outfit; he was going to change.
He undressed very quickly, like a soldier. Wen Xi thought about that – He Yan was born into a family of soldiers; it should not have been a surprise that he acted like one himself. Within seconds, he had off all the clothes on his upper body.
As Wen Xi glanced at him, she blushed. It was obvious just by looking her that she was extremely nervous. She quickly looked away, in case He Yan made fun of her.
She could tell from his the contour of his body that he must have been robust, but what she could not have seen was that it was so good looking. So good looking, in fact, that perhaps there was no one that could resist looking at him.
Wen Xi studied medicine in her previous life, and seen countless naked men, and thought that she had grown tired of the sight. She certainly never thought the day would come that she’d be embarrassed by it.
Even his back muscles were solid and sturdy. Well defined; smooth and powerful — not erotic, but rather, like art. Such a body could only be obtained through constant training.
“Some water?” After He Yan had finished changing, he faced her again.
His eyes above the mask were gentle and calm, showing that he did care about her.
His eyes were so charming that Wen Xi could not help but imagine what he looked like underneath his mask. Because they had little interaction in her previous life, she didn’t care very much about him, and any memories he had about his appearance were only vague ones.
“You like to space out a lot, don’t you?” His raised his eyebrows slightly.
Wen Xi was little uneasy, but nodded to answer his question, “I do. Thank you.”
He Yan handed her a cup of water and poured another cup of hot water from the thermos to make himself a coffee.
The scent of the coffee brought back some of Wen Xi’s memories about He Yan.
Her friends often talked about Dr. He during their catch-ups, and the way they talked about him made it seem like he was hard to get along with. However, seeing him in person, it seemed to her that he was just like any other doctor, who took good care of their patients; someone who was approachable and diligent.
She couldn’t help but think of the fire that happened last year. According to Wen Qing, when she was unconscious, it was He Yan who rescued her from the fire.
“Get some rest.” He then began to leave with his coffee.
“Wait!” Wen Xi stopped him.
He Yan turns around and looked at her, waiting patiently for her to speak. Wen Xi took a deep breath before she asked him,
“A year ago, was that you who rushed into the fire and rescued me?”
He Yan blinked, taken aback.
“You remember?”
It was true! Wen Xi clutched the bedsheets.
In her previous life, she had been naive and ignorant – thinking that whoever had saved her was a hero – and this gratitude she felt developed into a ‘love’ of some kind. So, when Nan Xunchuan, who had been pursuing her, told her that it was he who had been heroic and saved her, she felt as if she had fallen in love with him.
It was ridiculous how simple minded young girls could be.
Knowing that there was a friendship between He Yan and Nan Xunchuan, she asked, “Do you know that Nan Xunchuan told me that he was the one who saved me?”
He Yan replied indifferently,
“I do.”
