Chapter 6: Very awkward

Wen Xi looked up in surprise. She couldn’t understand.
“You do? Why would you let him do that?”
He Yan was silent for a few seconds before answering, “Did you get engaged just so you could repay him?”
That was true, but Wen Xi was too ashamed to admit the truth. She was naive then, and had fallen in love with her savior.
She realised then that she didn’t really love him at all, and what she loved was the idea of her ‘savior.’
Too prideful to admit the truth, she looked down.
“Of course not.” She denied.
“Since that’s not the case, what’s the matter?” He Yan asked. “I’m a doctor. It’s my job to save lives, and to help you. You don’t need to remember any favor I’ve done for you in particular.”
In just a few short sentences, He Yan had managed to make Wen Xi want to crawl into a crack in the wall and curl up in embarrassment.
‘It’ll be fine’, she told herself, ‘what’s done is done. Now that you’re reborn, it doesn’t matter anymore. What’s important now is that the past doesn’t repeat itself.’
“Thank you anyway.”
He Yan looked at her solemnly. He seemed to be contemplating something, but chose to keep it to himself. He turned around, and started to walk away.
“Please try my vaccine, it works!” Wen Xi waited for a response, however, she didn’t get one.
That same afternoon, a nurse came to see Wen Xi with a phone.
“Ms. Wen, your family has called.” She handed over the phone. “Oh, and before I forget, this is Dr. He’s phone. Please keep it with you, even after you’ve finished using it. He’s busy at the moment.”
With that, the nurse rushed out of the room.
The screen read ‘Wen Guosheng’; her father.
“Hello, Dad.”
“Hey, it’s me.”
Upon hearing a woman’s voice, Wen Xi’s mood immediately worsened. It was her father’s new mother in law, the mother of her step-mother, Wei Kexin, Zhou Ling. She couldn’t forget about the old woman even if she tried, with her constantly reminding her, and making her feel as if she were superior to Wen Xi in every way.
Zhou Ling was quite a snobbish woman. Being Wei Kexin’s biological mother, when Wen Xi’s father wasn’t home, she appointed herself the head of the family. Not only did she treat their maids and butlers like slaves, she treated Wen Xi as if she weren’t even her father’s daughter.
Both in the past and present, the woman disgusted Wen Xi.
Zhou Ling shouted over the phone, “You really must be the black sheep of the Wen family! How are we supposed to pick you up now? All of those viruses and bacteria – what if you brought back a disease and got us all infected? If word got out, who would dare come and visit us? ”
“Let me talk to my dad.” Wen Xi spoke with an icy tone. She didn’t have the energy to waste getting with angry with an unreasonable old woman.
“What use will that be? My daughter makes the decisions for the family, and she listens to me! You’ll have to stay there for a while, we’ll send someone to pick you up when it’s not as dangerous anymore. Behave, and don’t cause anymore trouble for the family!”
Suddenly, a different voice came through the phone, a gentle female’s voice.
“Hey Xixi, it’s Mom. I heard about what’s going on, and we’ve got to think very carefully now, you know? Mom will make sure someone comes to help you as soon as I can. You have to make sure you keep yourself safe, but don’t worry too much, okay?”
“What about my dad?”
“Your dad is busy. I don’t think there’s a difference if you talk to your dad instead. I’m doing everything I can to get you out of there. Remember to protect yourself.”
Wei Kexin hung up as she soon as she had finished speaking.
She was quite an actor, Wei Kexin. She had deceived everyone into believing she was a ‘perfect’ mother.
Wen Xi scowled at the thought. Everything was going to be made right this time. Whatever she had endured in the last life would come back to them in this one.
She shifted to the phone, taking note of the black case and a bullet as the screen saver. It gave off a calm yet powerful feeling, which was fitting for someone like He Yan.
She didn’t expect that he would call her family, nor did she think that he would have her father’s contact information in the first place.
She realized just how little she knew about him, and suddenly felt curious, wanting to know more about He Yan. But, perhaps it was best to ignore these curiosities, she decided.
She also decided that the best course of action for now was to stay in bed, to avoid causing anyone trouble with her injuries, and wait for the sunset.
Suddenly, she heard a loud ‘squeak!’
Wen Xi felt her heart race. A mouse?
She turned to look at He Yan’s luggage – two mice sat squeaking atop what was once a neat, folded pile of He Yan’s clothes on top of his suitcase.
Frightened by the mice, Wen Xi’s initial reaction was to throw something at the mice to scare them away; the phone in her hand. The phone hit the wall with a loud ‘thud’, causing the mice to flee, then landed on top of the pile of clothes.
‘That was pretty loud.’ Wen Xi thought to herself, quickly getting up from the bed to retrieve the phone.
She turned the screen on, the phone was still working, but it had cracked after being thrown the wall. The screen was now decorated with cracks; they almost looked like snowflakes, and the phone had been dirtied by the white paint of the wall.
Without much thought, Wen Xi picked up a piece of fabric lying next to her to wipe the phone down.
“What happened?”
Upon hearing his voice, Wen Xi broke into a cold sweat, quickly hiding her hands behind her back.
He Yan’s eyes narrowed as he approached, reaching around her with his long arms to see what she was trying to hide.
A phone with a cracked screen and a pair of men’s boxers.
