As they drove, a female soldier approached Wen Xi with a first aid kit.
“Miss Wen, may I help you apply some antibiotics?
“How did you know about my injuries?”
“No need to be worried, Mrs. Wen. Dr. He has given us orders to take good care of you, that’s all.” A general sitting nearby kindly explained. “You know, I have known Dr. He personally for many years, but this is the first time that he’s ever called me to help out a lady! Mrs. He, you must be very happy to have married him.”
Wen Xi had no clue as to how they’d come to this conclusion. She waved her hands nervously and shook her head. “No, I think you’re mistaken about our relationship. I am a patient, and he’s a good doctor. That’s all.” She rushed to correct them.
The general didn’t say anything else. Judging from his smile, Wen Xi knew that she hadn’t convinced him. It wasn’t smile you’d show to just anyone. It was then she realised she was blushing. She wondered if it was because of the weather, or because she had been mistaken for Dr. He’s wife.
Wen Xi arrived home at around eight in the evening. She was exhausted, and just wanted to go to bed.
When she walked into the living room, her family was watching TV and eating dessert. Her return had apparently come as a surprise to them, judging by the looks on their faces. They looked guilty, as if their crimes had been uncovered.
Wen Qing was the first to get back into character. She hurriedly put down her apple and ran over to Wen Xi.
“Xixi, you’re back! Finally! I was so worried about you!”
Wen Xi stayed quiet, knowing that it was only an act.
“You naughty girl. You have no idea how worried I was. Why would you go all the way to that little town in the first place?” Wei Kexin scolds, coming closer.
As she spoke, Wei Kexin scanned over Wen Xi thoroughly.
“How are you feeling now? Have you been to the hospital for an examination?”
“Mom, don’t worry. I know for a fact that infected people look far worse than she does. Xixi is definitely fine.”
Wen Xi knew that Wen Qing was only speaking up for her because she probably had something to ask of her.
“Well, if the Nan family knew that she had just returned from such a horrible place, they’d call off the engagement! How could I not be worried, especially when it comes to my own daughter’s marriage?”
Wen Xi had come to learn that Wei Kexin was only pretending to be a good mother. It disgusted her to know that she was only using her marriage to maintain a good relationship with the Nan family.
“Just call it off.” Wen Xi said coldly.
Wen Xi headed straight for the stairs after that, tired of their acting, when suddenly someone grabbed her shoulder.
Wen Xi turned around to find Wei Kexin with tears in her eyes.
“Xixi, what did you just say?”
“Since the Nan family doesn’t like me, they won’t treat me well even after I get married. I know that you only want me to be happy too, so why not just call it off now?”
Wei Kexin’s face changed drastically.
“I was only joking. Why would the Nan family not like you? Mr. Nan likes you a lot. Your marriage will be fine, rest assured.”
‘How ironic,’ Wen Xi thought.
The Nan Family were in control of the second wealthiest enterprise in C Nation, just a little behind the Nie Family in Tianzhou. On top of that, Nan Xunchuan was a playboy. Wei Kexin wanted to be on good terms with the Nan family, but didn’t want her own daughter to suffer through such a marriage, and thus, was using Wen Xi instead.
In her previous life, she had no idea that Wei Kexin had been pulling the wool over her eyes, and was living in the lie that she’d created. Wen Xi thought she’d really gotten married to her true love.
After she married to Nan Xunchuan, she ran into him multiple times hanging out with other women, but he had always been good at coming up with excuses. Her ‘mother’, as selfish as she was, had always persuaded her into believing that it was not as big a problem as she was making it out to be.
It wasn’t until she saw Wen Qing and Nan Xunchuan making love on the dining table with her own eyes that she’d completely lost it.
Nan Xunchuan locked her up that night and refused to let her out for a week, not until she finally agreed to stay married and ignore his affairs with other women.
Remembering these things only annoyed Wen Xi.
“If you think they’re that good, why don’t you marry into the Nan family yourself?”
“How dare you talk to your mother like that!” Wei Kexin shouted at her.
“Mom!” Wen Qing shouted.
Wen Qing winked, trying to send a signal to remind her mother to ‘be nice’.
It was amazing how Wei Kexin could recompose herself almost instantly.
She took Wen Xi’s hand and said, “Well, you know what, we should all be glad that you’ve come back safe and sound, instead of arguing over this silly engagement. Go, take a hot bath, and forget all about today. After you get a good rest, your sister needs you to record a new song.”
“My dearest sister, my concert is coming up next week. And you know there’s a lot of fans who’re crazy about your voice.” Wen Qing said, sincerely.
That brought up another memory for Wen Xi.
Wen Qing had managed to establish herself in the entertainment industry at twenty, through a family connection. Even so, she was a talented singer, and she was able to attract a large number of fans. But what her fans didn’t know was that her songs had all been recorded by Wen Xi.
Wen Qing had taken using Wen Xi’s voice for granted.
