Chapter 15: The Milton Family Rules

Molly and Boris were already asleep by the time they got home.
Claude and Billy’s doors were closed shut. Cathy made a shushing gesture at Nina and tiptoed back to her room.
Nina didn’t understand her because she had never experienced this before.
She switched on the lights openly and casually changed her shoes before returning to her room and shutting the door.
Green Wolf was still lying next to her backpack like a dutiful guard.
Nina led Green Wolf out into the yard for a short walk before returning to her room to take a shower. She changed into a loose cotton nightgown. The collar was loose and revealed half of her shoulders. Her skin was snow-white with a tinge of light pink.
She took out the old-fashioned phone with no network function again and rubbed her thumb against the gadget for a moment as if hesitating. After a long time, she put the phone back into her backpack.
“Little Green, switch off the lights.” Nina laid on the bed.
Green Wolf heard the command and pranced to the door with its head held high. It stood up with its long body and hit the switch with its strong claws.
The room fell into darkness.
In Boston, at the Drummond residence…
“The girl’s name is Nina Jowett. She’s the stepdaughter of Old Milton, who runs a foreign trade business in Boston Port. Why are you investigating her?”
Klein sat on the sofa with two glasses of red wine in his hands. He handed a glass to the brown-haired man across from him.
The brown-haired man had an extremely charming face, as though God had meticulously carved him. Every stroke carved was breathtakingly beautiful.
Even his faint smile was mesmerizing.
“Nothing much. I just find her very interesting.” The brown-haired man leaned against the armchair, his white wrist resting on the armrest, while his long and slender fingers dangled freely.
He outstretched one of his long legs and tucked the other. His posture was very languid.
“Interesting?” Klein was intrigued. “You find very few people interesting. Tell me more. What’s so interesting?”
The brown-haired man smiled mysteriously. “It won’t work out if I tell you.”
Klein became even more excited. “Come on, Huston. I sacrificed sleep to help you investigate a young lady from a small town this late at night. Don’t tell me you’re going to be stingy with your answers to such a simple question?”
Huston stood up and said, “I’m going to bed.”
He didn’t even take a sip of the red wine.
Klein craned his neck. “Huston, don’t get too serious. Think about your fiancée, the one who rules one of America’s biggest mafia families, the Gallianos! Catherine Galliano… Oh my God, just saying her name will give me nightmares tonight.”
There was a dangerous gleam in Huston’s eyes. “She disappeared. And I’m pretty sure she won’t return.”
The next morning, at the Milton residence…
“Ah!” Mary’s scream pierced the early morning quiet.
The scream awakened Nina.
However, she took her time to wash up and change her clothes before walking out of her room slowly. Stone-faced, she followed the noise to the dining room.
As she entered, she saw Mary talking to Molly in fear.
“Mrs. Donovan, this is exactly what happened. This dog actually opened the fridge to steal something. This is absolutely terrifying!”
Molly noticed Nina entering the dining room and looked at her helplessly. “Hey darling, you heard everything?”
Nina strolled over to Green Wolf and reached for the bottle of mineral water in its mouth. She stared at Mary and said in annoyance, “Don’t make a fuss. Little Green gets me a bottle of mineral water from the fridge every morning. That’s the old rule in our family. Everyone knows that.”
Green Wolf also shot Mary a disgruntled look.
Mary was in disbelief. “Get a bottle of mineral water from the fridge? Oh my God! Miss Jowett, I know I shouldn’t say this, but I really have to say it. This is not Maine. This is one of the richest towns in northern Boston, not a small family without rules. This is the Milton family!
“Miss Jowett, your pet is not allowed in the kitchen.”
Molly frowned. “Mary, Nina just came from afar. She doesn’t know the rules here.”
