Chapter 11: Lacking A Ring

One person clapped, then like-minded people followed suit to give a standing ovation. The graduation drama hadn’t ended but the sudden burst of thunderous applause was something that the school staff members among the audience had not expected.
Almost everyone around Ye Qiyi had stood up; she was the only one seated. She looked at the people around her in astonishment and also turned her head to look over at Gu Yiming beside her.
Gu Yiming hadn’t stood up, steadily sitting on his seat while raising his hands to applaud.
Ye Qiyi laughed coldly and turned around once more to look towards the stage. All of the actors had already appeared in two rows—lined up according to their respective roles—for the curtain call. For each female actor who stepped on stage, a male admirer in the same grade would come up to offer her flowers.
When it was Ye Mu’s turn, she went up the stage generously and stood in front of the platform. She raised her right arm up 45 degrees to the stage and bowed deeply in the perfect position of the curtain call. However, something embarrassing happened. As Ye Mu paused at the center of the stage for a few seconds, no one came up to offer flowers.
Below the stage, just as there was some discussion, a bright light shot into the dark theater through the door of the front hall. Everyone hurriedly cast their glances over as a man walked in from the entrance. Light penetrated the theater from outside so the man’s features couldn’t be seen clearly, but that tall stature and noble aura emitting from his body did not permit people from belittling him.
He was holding a large bouquet of Chinese bellflowers as his light-hearted footsteps steadily headed for the theater stage. Every step weighed on the hearts of the curious people.
As she was adorned with the make-up of an elderly person, Ye Mu stiffened and stared blankly, watching that man walk step by step towards herself. Until he came close and went up the stage, she finally saw him clearly and she couldn’t help exclaim, “Young Uncle…”
Mo Shen curled his lips towards her, handing a large bouquet of bellflowers to her, “I’m late.”
Ye Mu looked at that bouquet, then lifted her hand to look at Mo Shen. Her pair of lively eyes slowly became filled with happiness and the surprise from a moment ago had already disappeared without a trace.
“Thank you.” Ye Mu took that bouquet into her arms.
This was her first time receiving flowers.
Mo Shen raised his arm and hugged her once tightly, smiling lightly before leaving the stage in a blink of an eye. Just one embrace, but everyone seemed to have caught a hint of the romance between them.
“Who is this man? Is he some celebrity? He’s so handsome?”
“Yeah, I think that he’s really handsome too. Is he the boyfriend of this female actor acting as an elderly lady?”
“Who knows, but I think that they don’t match a little.”
“…”
Mo Shen had already left the stage and the curtain call on stage was still continuing. Although the applause went on, plenty of people still placed their attention on Mo Shen himself.
When Ye Mu entered the backstage to remove her make-up, her eyes unintentionally spotted the Chinese bellflowers lying on the side of the table. Her hand stopped involuntarily with her eyes focusing on that bunch of blooming bellflowers.
Her eyes also started smiling with her lips, “How did he know that I like bellflowers…”
After removing her make-up, she carried that huge bouquet of Chinese bellflowers and rushed out.
“Ye Mu, who was that who gave you the flowers just now? He’s so handsome.” As she stepped out, she was immediately stopped by a classmate who asked her inquisitively.
Ye Mu smiled faintly at the classmate but she did not reply and left the theater directly.
There was a bulky banyan tree at the theater entrance. Mo Shen stood under the banyan tree talking on the phone. He seemed to be discussing work matters with his deep scowl—emitting a cold aura around his surroundings.
Many girls passed by and thought that Mo Shen was a celebrity, rushing to take their cell phones out to secretly take candid shots for they didn’t dare to approach him for a small talk.
“Young Uncle,” Ye Mu walked over carefully and raised her hand to pat Mo Shen’s back.
Mo Shen turned around and smiled faintly at Ye Mu. He did not continue talking to the person on the phone and simply ended it, “You figure it out for now.”
Ye Mu was still carrying that bouquet of Chinese bellflower in her arms. She blinked her eyes at Mo Shen and asked, “Young Uncle, are you very busy at work?”
“No, let’s go.” Mo Shen always looked gentle towards her and he naturally stretched his hand out at her.
Ye Mu dazed off for a moment as she looked at Mo Shen’s palm. Soon after, she subconsciously reached out her hand.
He closed his palm slightly and her entire hand was surrounded by it.
A warm current entered her heart from her palm, causing her whole heart to tremble involuntarily.
Mo Shen lifted his slender fingertips and glanced at them, casually saying, “It seems like something’s missing.”
“What?” Ye Mu asked in confusion, thinking that she might have forgotten something.
“A wedding ring.” Mo Shen’s fingertips gently stroked her ring finger, solemness was evident in his voice.
Ye Mu lowered her head and followed his line of sight, but she didn’t say anything at all.
Afterwards, Ye Qiyi came out of the theater and she saw Ye Mu.
She hurriedly called her out, “Xiao Mu!”
Hearing a familiar voice, Ye Mu stopped in her tracks. But before she could turn around, Ye Qiyi had already grabbed Gu Yiming and walked towards Ye Mu’s direction before she confidently stood in front of her, “What a coincidence, are you going out now?”
“Yes.” Ye Mu replied indifferently.
In contrast to Ye Mu’s attitude, Ye Qiyi appeared friendly, “Do you have some time today? Yiming and I are about to choose a wedding ring. Can you accompany us? Maybe you might have some useful suggestions for me?”
“Qiyi,” Gu Yiming furrowed his eyebrows. Ye Qiyi was going too far. No matter what, Ye Mu was still his ex-fiancée.
Ye Mu took a deep breath and was just about to open her mouth and reject her offer when Mo Shen replied in her stead, “Sure, it just so happens that we are also about to pick out a wedding ring for us, together.”
Since Ye Qiyi walked out of the theater, she had already been looking at Mo Shen from time to time. She could guess what sort of relationship he had with Ye Mu. However, she pretended to be surprised and made a sidelong glance at Mo Shen, “So you’re the husband that let Xiao Mu receive a marriage certificate a few days ago?”
“How do you do? I’m Xiao Mu’s older sister,” Ye Qiyi extended her hand in a hurry.
Mo Shen was holding hands with Ye Mu and his other hand was in his pocket, he didn’t seem to be affected. Looking at Ye Qiyi’s outstretched hand, he did not shake it, only nodding his head politely.
Frankly, this caused Ye Qiyi some embarrassment. Her outstretched hand retracted unnaturally to smooth out her hair before saying, “Let’s go then. Do you have a car? If not, we can give you a lift.”
“My car has been sent for maintenance. Sorry to trouble you.” Mo Shen replied honestly—his words—succinct and polite.
A gentle smile was on Ye Qiyi’s face, but in her mind, she couldn’t help but rebuke him coldly. If there’s no car, then why pretend that there’s one? Why do you need to speak in such a matter-of-factly manner?
Due to Ye Qiyi’s friendliness, these four people—who should have been very awkward with each other—got into a car together.
Ye Mu and Mo Shen sat at the back. From the beginning until the end, Ye Mu leaned against the car window without saying anything. But her eyes couldn’t mask the slightest bit of hidden thoughts that she was harboring.
Ye Qiyi looked at Ye Mu’s face through the rear-view mirror and malicious intentions sprouted in her heart. After entering the jewelry emporium, she deliberately went to the most expensive jewelry store in a bid to humiliate Ye Mu.
Gu Yiming’s forehead was slightly wrinkled in the whole journey. When he turned his head back to look towards Ye Mu, he felt an indescribable heartache. If he hadn’t ended their engagement, perhaps she wouldn’t have found someone to marry so hastily.
“Young Uncle, shall we go back?” Ye Mu suddenly felt a little frightened, looking at the glittering array of jewels at the store.
Mo Shen’s large hand clasped her hand tightly as he gently asked, “Afraid that I can’t afford it?”
Ye Mu looked at him and nodded her head honestly.
Seeing Ye Mu’s grave expression, Mo Shen couldn’t help but laugh instead of getting angry.
She was just too lovable when she was this honest!
“Don’t worry,” Mo Shen only said these two words and nothing else. Holding her hand, he continued towards the large hall without any hesitation.
