Chapter 12: Four Years Later

Only Claire was alone.
On this campus, Claire did not have a single friend, so best friends were nonexistent in her books.
The culprit of it all was Asher.
She was an exception in the finance unit. She never stayed back after class, and she never skipped class either. A luxury car would always drop her off and pick her up, while all her clothes and bags were limited editions of luxury brands that ordinary people would never imagine owning. Even when the principal ran into her by accident, he would greet her with a kind smile.
Gradually, people started gossiping that Claire was probably a mistress who was hidden away.
News spread like wildfire. Soon enough, the entire school knew that the finance unit had a girl like her.
As stubborn as Claire was, she chose to say nothing and explained nothing. She just carried on by herself and soon, no one bothered to approach her.
It was simply because she had nothing to explain.
In these four years, Asher did not show up even once. Yet, he always found a way to remind Claire of his existence.
Claire did not bother to look for him, and she also did not ask about him. She wanted to see just how long it would take for him to see her again.
Claire removed her graduation gown and stuffed it into her bag. She then turned around and left. When she turned the corner into the campus boulevard, Claire was stunned and halted her footsteps.
She saw the butler, and behind the butler was Mr. Jones.
A black Lincoln was parked near them. Claire noted the car and smiled.
‘Asher, have you finally decided to show yourself?’
Who else could have the influence to make both the butler and Mr. Jones appear at the same time? Also, who else could make the car enter the campus under broad daylight?
In these four years, Claire saw Asher’s charismatic figure multiple times on tabloids and news. She watched how he became more successful, how he conquered the business world, and it made her smile.
How could she ever be worthy of a man like that?
Claire raised her foot and walked toward the Lincoln.
Mr. Jones walked toward her, bent down, and opened the car door. “Madam, please.”
“Thank you.”
Claire went into the car and looked at Asher with her head tilted sideways. She raised her eyebrow and smiled. “It’s been a long time, Mr. Kens.”
Asher closed the document in his hand and rubbed his eyebrows. “I heard you graduated today.”
“Yupe. And why is such a busy person like you here?”
Asher swept her a glance.
Claire looked at the document in his hands and she smiled brightly. “Let me guess. Do… Do you want a divorce? That’s great, then. I can’t ask for more. If that’s the case, then just hand me the divorce papers. I’ll sign it right away.”
When Claire stopped talking, the atmosphere in the car visibly changed.
Asher’s long fingers picked up the document and put it by his side. His fingertip tapped on the document. “You want a divorce?”
“Yes.” Claire nodded.
“Claire–” Asher narrowed his eyes and asked softly, “Have I wronged you?”
When Asher called her name, her back felt numb and her entire body stiffened. Yet her brain quickly came out with a response. “No way. I’m not wronged at all. I’m worried that you might feel wronged instead, Mr. Kens. A woman who’s destined to stand next to you must be worthy of you. I… am not someone presentable…”
“You aren’t.”
Claire’s words hastily got interrupted. Before she could feel upset, she nodded and agreed with him. “You’re right, Mr. Kens.”
In her heart, she was already cursing at him. She could endure it all for the divorce.
“This isn’t an issue.” Asher paused and continued, “You don’t have to be presentable..”
