Chapter 10: Extinct Animals and Barbarians?

The shark was immediately scared witless when it saw Xue Yue on its tail. It desperately paddled its fin and tail to escape.
“Where do you think you’re running to?”
Xue Yue was determined to kill this shark and how could he possibly let it go at that moment? He moved his limbs and immediately chased over. During the chase, he could not help but notice that his swimming speed was much faster than that of the shark’s and he managed to catch up right away.
“Die!”
His right hand stretched out and pierced through its tail, as his five fingers had stabbed deeply in its flesh. After which, his left hand reached out and stabbed into its tail once again. With its tail under attack, the shark tried to desperately escape but alas, Xue Yue tightly pulled on its tail and it could not escape no matter what it did.
In the end, while Xue Yue had his hands stabbed into its flesh, he came onto the shark’s back step by step, opened his legs wide, and tightly clamped onto its back. His left hand then ruthlessly grabbed onto its fin as his right hand struck out fiercely.
Bang—
The shark was suddenly shocked and turned dizzy.
“Who told you to bite me! You deserve it!”
Sounds of his fist striking the shark sounded endlessly and it desperately struggled and swam about. However, Xue Yue was firmly clamped onto it and the shark could not escape its fate of being killed. One punch after another, the shark finally stopped moving and slowly sank to the bottom.
“I’ll eat you today!”
Xue Yue was excited and exhilarated by killing a 5-meter long shark with his hands. He then grabbed onto the shark by its tail and dragged it out the cave.
“The feeling of seeing the sun again… is really good!”
He stood on the soft beach once again and closed his eyes to breathe in the fresh air. Recalling the events he had suffered inside the cave, Xue Yue felt happy as if he was a lucky survivor of a disaster. “Fortunately, I’ve managed to come out alive!”
“Time to return!”
Xue Yue did not know how long he had been in a coma inside the cave, but seeing how that the sun was rising high above, minimally one night had passed. He had to return quickly after having left for so long. With that thought in mind, Xue Yue started to tear the shark open. A 5-meter long sharp weighed at least one to two tons and he could not possibly finish so much meat on his own. Therefore, he should pick out the best parts to eat.
And the best parts of a shark would obviously be its shark fin. A shark’s fin is a seafood treasure and is very delicious. However, there was no way to process the shark fin on a deserted island and he could only make do and eat it as is!
With his strength greatly enhanced, Xue Yue easily tore off the shark’s fin. Following this, he caught a few small fishes, crabs, and shells on the beach before returning to his cave.
As expected, the bonfire had gone out after one night. Not even coals were left. Xue Yue was helpless and could only find some firewood to make a fire again. But as he had his previous successful experience, the success rate of making another fire had greatly increased and he merely took ten minutes to make a fire.
Grilled shark fin, crab, and shells… after half an hour later, the smell of meat wafted in the air.
“Mmm, it’s pretty good!”
Xue Yue was very happy as he enjoyed his first cooked meal on the island. Even though the taste of barbeque meat was so-so, he still enjoyed it with relish as if he was enjoying expensive food.
“As long as one sets his mind on doing something, the sea will never be stingy with its gifts.”
However, Xue Yue was startled by his appetite after he finished the big seafood meal. He had eaten a shark’s fin, together with a few other fishes, crabs, and shells. There were at least four to five kilograms of meat and all of it went down his stomach. Even so, he did not feel stuffed.
“Could it be that my appetite has also increased…” Xue Yue murmured to himself.
The meal lasted for more than two hours and the sun had already risen and hung up in the sky like a huge fireball after he was done. The small island became hot and stuffy and even the plants around the pool had slightly wilted.
However, Xue Yue did not feel too hot. His face did not turn red nor was he out of breath. Not to mention, he did not even sweat a single drop. It was as if he had endless strength all over his body and he himself was not too surprised as he attributed it to the result of the variation to his body.
Since he did not feel hot, Xue Yue did not wish to waste time and started a grand gathering and construction campaign. A large bonfire used for signaling, a bed, a spear for fishing, a fence, and a more advanced campfire… so on and so forth all needed to be made.
He did not know how long he had to stay on this island, but he reckoned that he would not return in a short period of time. In this case, of course, he would have to build a better place so that he could live comfortably.
Throughout the entire afternoon and even for the rest of the week, Xue Yue was busy chopping trees, collecting firewood, tying ropes, bundling, searching for food… so on and so forth. He had to do everything personally but he was quite content even in adversity.
He was not afraid of hard work or tiredness, but leisure, and security. He could not help himself as he thought of his father every night when he fell asleep. His longing for his father was like a tide that was drowning him…
…
Today was the eighth day Xue Yue had been left alone on this island.
Eight days was neither a long time nor a short time. There was a very big change to the vicinity of the pool and the cave.
Firstly, there was a row of wooden fence, 1.5 meters high, formed by tying up trunks of the same thickness. It had encircled the open space before the cave and even the whole pool, forming a simple yard. The weeds inside the yard had been cleared out and it was clean and tidy.
Each and every piece of wood had been deeply rooted in the soil and were extremely strong and stable. In the middle of the fence was a 2 meter-wide wooden door that could be opened or closed.
It was merely a simple fence, but it had added a huge amount of life to the surroundings..,
There was also an earthen stove made of clay in front of the cave. It was currently in operation with a stone covering it. It was a stove Xue Yue used to preserve the tinder. When there was no need for a fire, he would cover it up. This method did not waste firewood nor would the fire extinguish, which could be considered killing two birds with one stone.
There were all sorts of items placed next to the stove, which included bowls made of coconut shells, bottles he picked up, wooden chopsticks, knives made from stones, stone axes, so on and so forth…
The most prominent item inside the cave was a simple storage shelf made of wood which was divided into four layers. Four to five coconuts were placed on the first layer, several bunches of bananas on the second, smoked bacon and fish on the third, and a few bottles of water on the fourth layer. Beside the shelf was a bed made of wood.
The bed was 2 meters long and 1.5 meters wide, covered with a thick layer of tree leaves and bark. In addition, there were four to five sharp spears placed inside the cave, and several ropes made from bark…
Xue Yue had personally crafted everything here this week. Even though there were many items that were not so aesthetically pleasing to the eye, they were practical. Moreover, the cave looked more like a home with these items.
And what was Xue Yue doing right now?
Xue Yue, who was only in his trousers, was currently collecting thick and thin strips of wood between the mountains and forest as he was preparing to make a chicken pen, and a chicken pen was naturally used to rear chickens!
However, the ‘chickens’ he was planning to raise were quite different. Two days ago while he was hunting, he had accidentally gone past the small valley where the pool was located and climbed onto one of the three peaks on the other side of the island. He then discovered several strange animals in the jungle.
The reason why they were strange was that Xue Yue had never seen those animals before. It was different from all the animals that could be seen on Earth. Their appearance was very strange, and he suspected that these animals should have been extinct long ago. Therefore, it was impossible to see them anywhere on Earth.
This discovery made him slightly surprised. But of course, it merely stopped at surprise and other than that was joy. The reason for that was because they were all food.
Xue Yue saw a species of bird suspected to be a ‘dodo bird’ and was ready to catch several of them to raise. This way, he would have a continuous stream of eggs and meat to eat!
It had to be known that a dodo bird weighed around twenty kilograms and was comparable to four to five chickens.
But even so, Xue Yue had to admit that dodo birds were really beautiful with their greyish-blue feathers, a large head, 23cm long grey beak with a light red sheath forming a hooked tip, small wings that were unable to fly, strong yellow feet and a bunch of curved feathers at the back of its foot.
Dodo birds were stupid, fat and they couldn’t fly. They also ran at slow speeds so it was extremely easy for him to catch several of them. He had managed to capture one while hunting and enjoyed a great barbeque meal. The taste was great and crisp.
But Xue Yue was not satisfied. He was living alone on this deserted island and wouldn’t he have company if he could rear a few ‘chickens’? In this type of place, what he feared the most was solitary and loneliness!
When he thought of that, Xue Yue was fired up and in an energetic mood. His speed had also increased and he managed to collect a large bundle of wooden strips in a short time. “It’s more or less enough and I should return…”
After he tied up those wood strips and carried them over his shoulders, Xue Yue walked towards the pool while pushing the tree branches blocking his way. He was very fast and soon passed through the jungle and stood on the high slope opposite of the pool.
Standing here and looking at the valley, he had a broad view and could see the whole channel and even the sea further away.
As usual, Xue Yue habitually looked across the sea. He would repeat this five to six times daily to search if there were any boats passing by. However, he ended up disappointed every single day.
“Eh?”
All of a sudden, Xue Yue softly exclaimed and his eyes focused at the entrance outside the channel. There were several shadows undulating with the waves and could be seen now and then. “What’s that?” Xue Yue could not help but be curious.
Crunch!
Jumping down from the high slope and throwing the bundle of wood into the fence, Xue Yue ran towards the straits like a gust of wind and came to the beach very soon.
“Boat? It’s a boat!”
Xue Yue was immediately excited. As the shadows entered the strait and came closer, he could clearly see that the shadows were several small boats that were constantly rowing towards the depths of the strait at that moment.
“That’s great! Boats! They’re actual boats. I’m saved. There’s hope for me”! Xue Yue’s excitement was beyond measure and he had an impulse of wanting to hug someone and cry.
However, as those boats came closer, the surprise on his face gradually disappeared and was replaced by deep confusion. Those few dark shadows were indeed boats, but they were canoes often seen in movies.
There were five to six people with black skin on each canoe. There were all sorts of messy colors drawn on their faces together with some bone accessories on their necks. Their hair was also very messy.
“Those are… barbarians?!”
