Chapter 56: You Want to Marry Her?
“According to Luo Wei, Bai Ran only called Jiang Hao last night for help and he did not pick up the phone when she called.
“That being the case, no one could have been aware of the fact that something had happened to Bai Ran’s mother…
“So then, how did you, Jiang Bangyuan, find out about this?
“Ah, that’s right. George reported something interesting to me about the CCTV recording of Bai Ran’s neighborhood when I came home last night.
“For some reason, the CCTV recorded the activities in the neighborhood for the past thirty days very well, but thirty minutes worth of last night’s footage were missing.
“The footage of, coincidentally, the exact same time that the accident involving Bai Ran’s mother took place.
“All this…it’s really coincidental…”
The tone Quan Rui had used was neither warm nor cold, but his words immediately made Jiang Bangyuan nervous.
She shifted her gaze away from Quan Rui’s eyes, realizing now that he had been scrutinizing her while he spoke. She quickly shifted her gaze back to confront him bravely but the intense look he gave her made her look away guiltily.
“I…heard from my younger sister.” Jiang Bangyuan was obviously saying anything just to cover up her slip. She quickly changed the subject of conversation to deflect suspicion. “Rui, everyone in the city knows that we have a prenatal marriage arrangement. What are they going to think now that you suddenly want to keep the illegitimate daughter by your side?”
Jiang Bangyuan did not dare to talk about other more important things and continued to harp on the topic of Bai Ran.
Last night during the poker game, she did not speak up and just watched as Quan Rui hugged and behaved intimately with Bai Ran. The reason was that she had been afraid that the moment she spoke up, the onlookers who were waiting for a good show, would assume immediately that she had been ditched. Secondly, she had thought that Quan Rui’s interest in Bai Ran was temporary, a tryst in the heat of the moment, just for a brief period in time. She was sure that he would naturally lose interest in her after the night had passed.
“She’s merely a pesky stray dog. How can she possibly be good enough for Quan Rui?”
This was what Jiang Bangyuan had thought. She never expected that Quan Rui would withdraw his investments by the time she woke up the next morning!
Now, looking back on last night, she realized that she had let things get out of hand…
She absolutely could not afford for her arranged marriage to fall through, so she was left with only one option, and that was to head over to his manor to talk things through properly with Quan Rui!
Quan Rui naturally did not overlook the fact that Jiang Bangyuan was intentionally trying to change the subject of their conversation.
But neither did he continue to press the matter. If Jiang Bangyuan was reluctant to speak up, it would be too much effort for him to continue asking about it.
“I never promised to marry you. Back then, Uncle Jiang merely said that he would give me his daughter’s hand in marriage. He had never really specified which daughter it would be, did he?” Quan Rui raised his eyebrows and turned the question back to Jiang Bangyuan in return. Casually, he made his relationship with Bai Ran clear to her. “Besides, Jiang Yuexi will be my wife soon. I do not wish to hear any more talk, not a single word, about her being an illegitimate daughter.”
With that statement, Quan Rui had begun to take an offensive stance against anyone who sought to hurt his wife.
Jiang Bangyuan was astounded by what she heard him saying to her. “You’re being serious? You want to marry her?”
In just a moment, Jiang Bangyuan’s mind went completely blank.
“Back then, it was true that Father did not specify that I would be the one to marry Quan Rui, but so many years have passed, and everyone already assumed that I’m the one who was betrothed to him.
“Ultimately, Quan Rui is simply going to change that because he wants to?”
Jiang Bangyuan felt slightly giddy at the thought of this. She was at a loss as to how to resolve the current situation.
The only thing that Jiang Bangyuan was clear about was the fact that if Bai Ran—that little wretch—hadn’t gone to her house last night to seduce Quan Rui, her arranged marriage would never have fallen through.
“I could have been the rightful Young Mistress of the Quan Family as well as the wife of the President of Universal Group!
“Everything was destroyed by Bai Ran, that little minx!”
While Jiang Bangyuan was still spitting mad and blaming Bai Ran for her misfortunes, Quan Rui had gotten up and prepared to head upstairs.
“You can leave if there’s nothing else.”
