In the room that was neither too large nor too small, Smith had been through to fierce exchanges. The first was with Quintana, and the second had been with those now-cooling bodies on the floor.
Quintana went to the bathroom to change clothes, using the opportunity to feed the hungry baby. Luo Su and Smith searched the bodies. The hotel was no longer safe, and the next wave of attackers might be here soon. The two of them hoped to find a clue on the bodies before the enemies arrived.
The attackers were all wearing the same uniform. Smith determined that they were former soldiers and found a clue on their guns.
Once Quintana was done changing, the three hastily went to the truck and left the hotel.
The police were once more slow to arrive. The Ford had already exited the hotel’s main gate when police sirens came howling from around the corner. Through the rearview mirror, Luo Su saw more than ten police cars and even two armored trucks.
The doors to the armored trucks opened, unleashing two squads of special police. They wore helmets and tactical vests, and on the back of their vest were several letters in white.
S.W.A.T!!
Luo Su’s brow creased. He knew what the S.W.A.T. was. They were not mobilized in ordinary circumstances and were primarily sent to deal with extremely dangerous criminals. Their usual targets were reprehensible gangsters and underworld organizations.
That these people had appeared meant that Luo Su and Smith had been tagged with extremely foul crimes.
[Ding!]
[User has encountered the S.W.A.T., triggering the lottery phase. Would you like to pull now?]
Fine, at least there was some good news.
Luo Su comforted himself as he pulled from the lottery. The system quickly indicated that he had won a Character Card.
[Character Card: S.W.A.T. (You said that my 100-9 kill count from the dropship was gotten with assistance and even kicked me from the room?! You rookies! As a S.W.A.T. member, I’ve never cheated)]
Luo Su: “…”
A good kick! A 100-0 kill count? If you weren’t cheating, who was!?
Smith sat in the passenger seat and inspected the prize he had taken from a corpse, a metallic handgun.
“Look at this. A Nite Tac handgun produced by the Hammerson Weapons Company. It just started trading six months ago. All of them were using this model of handgun.”
“What’s so good looking about it? Isn’t the truth obvious?”
Luo Su glanced at the gun and proceeded to ignore it. He had never heard of a weapons company called Hammerson. This was a weapons company that only existed in the plot, and he only needed his feet to realize that his attackers were connected to this company.
Smith had the same idea. It wasn’t that he was exceptionally smart, but that the enemy was exceptionally stupid and had delivered the clue to his door.
Luo Su drove the Ford out of the city. People were searching for them all over the place, so they could only spend the night in the truck. The two men had no objections, and Quintana and the baby had the backseat all to themselves. Quintana had lived a hard life, so she was satisfied as long as she had a place to put her feet down.
Perhaps because they had been through a gunfight together, Smith was gradually growing friendlier with Luo Su and gave a rough summary of all the suspicious things he had encountered.
Once Luo Su had understood what was going on, the two of them both became curious about the baby’s mysterious origins. Just what was his identity that had earned him such frenzied pursuit?
Smith decided to go and take a look at that Hammerson Weapons Company, but Luo Su had no intention of getting in on the fun. He chose to remain behind with the excuse of protecting Quintana and the baby.
Quintana wasn’t willing for Smith to go alone, but Smith nodded in agreement. He could only boldly risk himself if he knew that Quintana and the baby were safe.
They decided to move out the next day. Smith left early in the morning with a simple plan. He would first infiltrate the Hammerson factory and then act according to the situation.
It was so simple and crude that Luo Su was speechless. He was even more certain that Smith was the main character of a different script because this sort of treatment was only reserved for the main character. A normal person with such suicidal inclinations would just be dead.
As expected, Smith really was the main character. Half a day later, he successfully returned with information. The one who wanted to kill the baby was a major shareholder of Hammerson. The reason for killing the baby was simple. He wanted to stop the baby’s father from getting a perfectly matched bone marrow transplant.
Thus, Smith just needed to find the baby’s father and hand him over to successfully extricate himself from this predicament.
From the clues Smith had gathered, he determined that the baby’s father had been stricken by some incurable illness, and it was only because he had failed to find a suitable donor that he had started to mess around with his children. He had spent money to purchase the services of three willing women to be carriers for his child, had constructed a secret safe house, and had even sent the CIA to protect those women.
What happened after this was obvious. That major Hammerson shareholder had attacked the safe house, and the baby that Smith had saved was the only survivor. The baby’s mysterious father was an extremely powerful person, and because he stood in the way of Hammerson, that major shareholder was apparently willing to do anything so that the disease was terminal.
Luo Su was completely baffled. Smith’s analysis was very reasonable, but to Luo Su, it felt like Smith must have a ‘God’s eye view’ of the situation. But when he thought about how Smith was the main character, he realized that this was only to be expected.
For the main characters, this was a basic skill!
In Luo Su’s few seconds of absentmindedness, Smith had determined the child’s father. He took up a sticky newspaper and pointed at the face of a politician on it as he firmly declared, “It’s him! Senator Rutledge!”
Luo Su: “The reason?”
“He has enough authority to mobilize the CIA and is firmly in the anti-gun camp and has given more than one speech on the topic. If he becomes president, Hammerson will go bankrupt!”
Luo Su: “…”
Please forgive me if I find this hard to accept. This conjecture is too fantastical. Not even novels are this absurd. And also, this newspaper appeared at just the perfect time!
Quintana chose to mindlessly support this fantastical conjecture. “If we get in touch with this Senator Rutledge, will we be safe?”
“No, we’ll be even worse off. It won’t just be Hammerson, but the entire American government that will be after us…” Smith had a very grave expression. “You have to take this child and leave. You can only come back once I’ve finished handling this.”
“How do you plan to deal with it? Fight against the entire country?” Quintana shouted. She didn’t want Smith to risk himself again. There didn’t even seem to be a sliver of hope, and she was starting to get desperate.
Smith seized Quintana and looked her in the eye. “Trust in me. I’ll handle this…for the both of you.”
They tightly embraced.
Seeing that the fires of war were about to burn, Luo Su softly coughed to indicate that he still existed. It was useless. Smith’s affections were so deep that he couldn’t calm himself down, and Quintana used her Death Coil skill, all four limbs hooking around Smith’s body.
Luo Su: “…”
I should have brought a video camera with me!
“Waaaaa~~~.”
Sensing that his cafeteria was occupied, the baby began to cry. Quintana awoke from her daze, pushed Smith away, and transformed into a kind mother.
Smith started from the side. There were two of them, so it was fine if they shared, right?
Luo Su placed a hand on the restless Smith and numbly said, “Brother, there will be many more days to come. Once you finish handling this, you’ll have plenty of time to go digging. Let’s talk about your plan first. You’re not thinking about acting according to the situation again, are you?”
Luo Su didn’t want to involve himself in this matter, but if Smith went out in a blaze of glory, he would have made this trip for nothing. After counting the cards in his inventory, he decided that he could contribute a little.
“I’ve accepted your good intentions, but I can do this alone…” Smith glanced at Quintana and whispered to Luo Su, “Protect her and the child. I can’t go without them.”
Seeing this tough man lower his head, Luo Su felt his heart go soft. “That’s no problem. You can just leave them to me, but when you train me, you’d better not hide anything.”
Smith softly chuckled and raised a fist. “Of course! If you pay a little more, I can even consider teaching you a few of my special skills. Diapers and powdered milk cost quite a lot.”
Luo Su bumped fists with him. “Relax. Cross will pay for everything. How much milk money you can get will depend entirely on you.”
Smith rejoiced. If he could earn a little money for each special skill he taught to Luo Su, he could bankrupt Cross.
“Then it’s decided! Good luck!”
“Same to you!”
