Smith left alone. Although they had not known each other for long, Luo Su acknowledged him as a true man. To extend a helping hand for a baby, you had no blood relationship to, and to leap into a fire for a woman you loved was all that you could ask a man for.
Luo Su mentally swore that he would keep Quintana and the baby safe until Smith returned.
Luo Su drove around the suburbs, first filling the truck with gas and then heading to the supermarket to buy some necessities for the baby. Smith was so poor that he didn’t even leave behind money to buy diapers. Even his bullets and weapons had been picked up from corpses.
Was someone so poor really an assassin?
“Where are we going now?” Quintana uneasily asked, her thoughts still on Smith.
Luo Su comforted, “Any place is fine. If you’re tired, sleep a little. Perhaps Smith will be back when you wake up.”
“But if we just wander around, how will Smith find us?” Quintana changed the baby’s diaper and gave the baby a kiss.
“Of course, he will. After all, he’s a professional…” Luo Su froze. The thought of the unreliable Cross made him have second thoughts.
Quintana noticed Luo Su’s pause and doubtfully asked, “Are you sure?”
Luo Su shrugged. “I was just messing around with you. I gave him my telephone, so he can just call me.”
…
Smith was in an extremely bad spot. The situation had been far graver than he had expected.
After parting with Luo Su, he was quickly pursued by Hammerson’s men. The short leader was extremely obsessed, the consecutive defeats making him determined to either kill or be killed.
This fellow caused quite a lot of trouble for Smith, but in the end, he managed to escape and get in touch with Senator Rutledge.
The senator agreed to talk with Smith. The two of them met on an airplane. The senator was in poor condition, and it seemed like his illness was going to end him at any moment. The baby in Smith’s hands was his only chance.
If that had been all, then Smith would have no longer been involved. He would have handed the baby over, and everyone would leave happy.
Alas, Senator Rutledge was a politician, as well as the candidate selected by the Democratic Party to run for president. Would a man with such an excellent future career really gamble on Smith?
The answer, naturally, was no!
Senator Rutledge trusted more in his political tricks. Upon learning that the safe house had been destroyed and all three surrogate mothers had been killed, he immediately got in touch with Hammerson’s owner and made a deal. As long as the last surviving baby could be found and Hammerson supported his presidency, he would use his authority to make things a little easier for Hammerson.
For example, he could relax on the restrictions on firearms and allow citizens to buy submachine guns to use for hunting!
As for his proposal to ban guns and the promises he had made to the people on the stump, they weren’t even worth mentioning in front of power and survival and had all been cast to the back of his mind.
Of course, if he needed to make a speech, he would make a speech, and if he needed to call for a gun ban, he would call for a gun ban. How else would he win the election?
Senator Rutledge had never paid any attention to Smith. He treated him as a slightly lucky man, or perhaps a man who thought himself smart and had the CIA trick him onto the plane.
The unfortunate Smith encountered the major Hammerson shareholder on the plane as well as the stubborn, short man. Smith acted first, taking the senator as a hostage and successfully retreating into the plane’s cargo bay.
“It’s useless. We’re 7000 meters above the ground, and there are more than ten bodyguards outside! You’ve got nowhere to run!” Senator Rutledge had been tied to the entry hatch by Smith and was trying to plead his case.
He wasn’t worried that he would be killed. If he died, Smith would not be able to survive.
“Even if it’s for yourself, you should reconsider. You’re not bad, and a future president is missing a bodyguard…”
“Shut your mouth!”
Smith viciously glared at the senator. “It’s not for myself, but for that woman and child. If I kill you, no one will be able to chase them.”
“What?! Are you crazy?!”
The senator was struck dumb. He could sense that Smith wasn’t joking around, but how could two dogs have the same worth as his life? This was too absurd!
“I’m not crazy!” Smith pointed his gun at the senator’s head. “Your death will bring about a public outcry, and your proposal to ban guns will win the support of the enraged masses. Congress will pass your proposal and realize your last wishes.”
Senator Rutledge felt ill after hearing these words. He sensed that Smith had developed some misunderstanding of America.
The so-called gun ban was just a slogan, a way for presidential candidates to dupe the masses into voting. There were far too many business owners in this country who made money from selling guns, so a gun ban could never be passed, and everyone would quickly laugh and forget about it.
As he looked down the black barrel of the gun, the senator sensed that if he didn’t say something now, he wouldn’t need to say anything ever again.
As an outstanding politician, Senator Rutledge trusted in his silver tongue. He had also been taught by the CIA how to deal with a hostage situation. After analyzing the kind of man Smith was, he began to act like he was giving a speech.
“Shoot then! Hopefully, my death can salvage a little dignity for this country. The people need a safe living environment, and my death will be the first brick thrown to shatter the tyranny of guns…”
Senator Rutledge’s body trembled, a fearless and heroic look on his face. In truth, he was rather smug. Smith was just a gangster from the lower rung of society. He would be won over by this righteous act and spare him, given that he was a presidential candidate. Smith might even submit and become his loyal servant.
With this thought in mind, Senator Rutledge firmly nodded. “Come on, then, shoot! I’ve readied myself…”
Bang!
Smith fired at Senator Rutledge’s head and disdainfully said, “Idiot, did you take me for a fool?”
The gunshot alarmed everyone on the plane, and they instinctively sensed that something bad had happened to the senator. They began to madly ram at the entry hatch, but the senator’s body was blocking the way. They wouldn’t be able to get in unless they damaged his body.
After killing the future president, Smith opened the escape hatch, found a parachute, and jumped from 7000 meters in the air.
The furious bodyguards jumped from the plane with their own parachutes. With the senator, their future job prospects were finished, so they wanted to kill Smith to make up for this loss a little.
Ten-some people began a fierce gunbattle in the sky…
…
Screech!
With the screeching of wheels, Luo Su stopped the Ford and glanced at the abandoned factory in front of him. There was nothing else around it, no large buildings or shrubs to hide in, so there was no need to worry about snipers. This would greatly decrease the difficulty in protecting Quintana and the baby.
“We’ll wait here for a word from Smith. I sense that he’ll give me a call soon.”
Luo Su comforted, but really, he had no sense at all. He had dared to make such claims because he knew that Smith was the main character. From his many years of movie-watching experience, the endings were mostly with everyone reunited. Even if it was a tragedy, the male lead would die in the embrace of the female lead.
Luo Su parked the truck in the warehouse, found a place to hide Quintana, and then hid elsewhere, inspecting the area to see if any suspicious people were approaching.
Luo Su soon heard the shrill howl of something dropping from a high altitude. Looking up, he was struck dumb. There were no suspicious people on the ground, but things were different in the sky.
Men dressed in black wearing parachutes were tumbling from the sky. They had failed to open their parachutes and crashed to the ground in a variety of posture before being crushed into pulp. The closest one landed less than ten meters from Luo Su, and the thud made Luo Su’s heart thump.
“Brother, look at my hand! What number is this?”
“Say it with me: two!”
Given that there was no reply, he concluded that the man was dead. Luo Su ran behind a metal door so that he didn’t die by getting hit and becoming a laughingstock.
Five minutes later, a white parachute gently drifted down around 500 meters from Luo Su. The owner of the parachute saw the abandoned factory and began to stagger over.
Luo Su gripped his M9, and when the man got close, he fiercely raised the gun…but he didn’t fire, as the man was Smith.
Smith saw Luo Su and gave a miserable smile. Gripping his wounded shoulder, he collapsed to the ground. He had been struck by a bullet in the air and was spent.
Luo Su rushed over and helped him up, asking in disbelief, “The hell? How did you find this place?”
“Heh, want to learn it? Pay up!”
Luo Su: “…”
Money was no problem, but your actions will make Cross cry!
Blood was leaking out from between Smith’s fingers, and his face was pale white. He was in an extremely weak state as Luo Su helped him into the factory.
By the time Luo Su put Smith down, Smith was already unconscious. Luo Su inspected him and found that his right shoulder had been shot. Fortunately, the bullet hadn’t hit bone and had only struck flesh.
But if the bleeding wasn’t stopped, Smith would still die.
Luo Su only had the ‘Blood-Absorbent Bandages’ that wouldn’t be very useful. He took some water from the truck, cleaned the wound, and then tied up Smith’s shoulder with a piece of his sleeve.
Quintana had heard the noise outside, and after realizing that Smith had come, hurried over with the baby. Seeing that Smith was injured, she broke into tears. Luo Su, after confirming that Smith’s life wasn’t in danger, placed him in the passenger’s seat and began to drive away.
The engine rumbled to life, and Luo Su slammed on the gas pedal and drove out of the factory. Thirty seconds later, he drove back.
They were surrounded. Four armored trucks had blocked every exit.
