Multiverse’s End - Chapter 49
Chapter 49: Chapter 049 – A Different Kind of Spider
Here was a barren land that was yet to be developed!
But calling it a barren land was too much. It was just that a triangle of fog had made it into a forbidden zone that no one had ever seen before.
As the first explorer to step onto this land, Luo Su examined the scenery, understanding that he had a heavy burden on his shoulders. He could instantly tell that this mountain valley was extremely valuable and could not be recklessly explored. If he was to continue, he needed to advance cautiously, step by step.
There was a stream running through the valley, but digging and widening would be needed so that even more water could flow.
Luo Su focused his mind and was just about to begin digging when a strange cry came from outside the bedroom.
“Luo Su, are you in there?” It was Mike’s voice. This kid had seemingly gone crazy and was pounding at the door.
Ashley grabbed Luo Su’s shoulder and softly said, “Forget him. Continue. If no one says anything, he’ll leave on his own.”
“Luo Su! Ashley! I know you’re in there! If you don’t open the door, I’ll call Mom.”
This cold bucket of water enraged Ashley. She seized the blanket, all of her anticipation now gone.
Ashley furiously put on her clothes, and just when she was about to storm out and give Mike a good beating, Luo Su soothed her, told her to be patient. Then, with a nonchalant face, he opened the door.
Luo Su came out and then gently closed the door behind him. He then seized Mike by the shoulder and pushed him to the wall, savagely saying, “Kid, if you don’t give me a good explanation, I guarantee that I’ll beat you up so bad your own mother won’t recognize you.”
Mike ignored Luo Su’s savage visage and excitedly said, “Luo Su, I went to Joshua’s spider farm today. He discovered a cricket that seemed like some sort of growth hormone. When the spiders ate these crickets, they suddenly grew super large.”
Luo Su stared at Mike in shock because it was this boy who had helped him trigger the World Mission. He thought that it would have been Chris or Samantha.
[Ding! user has triggered the World Mission]
[World Mission: Investigate the truth behind the spider mutations and destroy the source of the mutations]
[Mission failure will result in remaining in this world forever, hunted down by an endless wave of frenzied spiders]
Luo Su frowned. This World Mission seemed a little too simple! Even someone who had only watched the movie for the girls knew that the spiders had mutated because of chemical pollution…or…was there something else?
Luo Su’s first thought was that the mission was too easy because he already knew the truth. But on second thought, he realized that there might be something else, that the spiders had not mutated simply because of some unknown chemical.
Moreover, the World Mission had said that he needed to ‘destroy’ the source of the mutations. The word ‘destroy’ couldn’t help but make one draw a most fantastical conclusion: was the source of a living being?
Luo Su turned thoughtful, and his blood began to rush to his head. There would be plenty of time in the future, and in any case, he had lost his excitement, so he decided to go and see what had happened at the spider farm so that the plot wouldn’t catch him by surprise.
“Kid, after hearing this, I’m suddenly interested. Let’s go to Joshua’s and take a look.”
Mike was overjoyed and happily said, “Luo Su, I knew you would say that. How can a girlfriend be more fun than spiders? Let’s go now.”
Luo Su placed a hand on Mike’s head. The spider farm was extremely dangerous, those mutant spiders like a time bomb. He wasn’t afraid if he came alone, but things weren’t so certain if he brought Mike.
“Ashley!”
Luo Su called into the room, upon which Ashley poked her head outside.
“what’s wrong?”
“Mike said that spiders are more fun than you…”
With this casual comment, Luo Su left the house, leaving behind a dumbfounded Mike and a furious Ashley. As he drove away, he could hear screams coming from the house.
Luo Su had gone to the spider farm several days ago. Mike had brought him there, and he had become acquainted with the spider farmer, Joshua, an old and single man who loved spiders. When a man could turn a hobby into their job, they would receive double the satisfaction, and this was what Joshua had succeeded in. While he lived in the middle of nowhere, he actually had a rather decent lifestyle, and he had made quite a lot of money from raising spiders…it was just that he didn’t have a wife.
The spider farm was located outside the town, far from other residents, both for safety purposes and for the conditions he needed to raise the spiders.
On his motorcycle, Luo Su still needed 15 minutes to get there. The moment he arrived, he sensed a hair-raising danger. It seemed like thousands of pairs of eyes were watching him from the wooden house up ahead.
Since his passive skill ‘Sixth Sense’ had been triggered, Luo Su decided to play it safe. First, he called out Joshua’s name, and once he didn’t receive a response, he picked up a rock and broke a window.
Crash!
As the glass shattered, ten spiders the size of a palm crawled out and charged out Luo Su’s motorcycle. They were jumping spiders.
Luo Su immediately turned his motorcycle around and left. There was no need to think. Joshua was dead!
Once he got back to town, Luo Su went straight to the police station. Sheriff Samantha wasn’t there, so Deputy Pete met him. This town only had two police officers, the sheriff, and her deputy. This was great, as it meant that everyone looked after each other.
Pete was a rather comical middle-aged white man who was rather fat. Upon seeing him, you would immediately realize the truth of the saying, ‘don’t be afraid of being bald; be afraid of being half-bald.’
Pete’s hairline had already reached the back of his hand, but the curly hair on the sides stubbornly continued to grow. Rather than shaving everything off, he trusted in his hair follicles and gave them a chance to redeem themselves.
Those middle-aged men who believed that their hair follicles would experience a second spring normally weren’t that smart and were rather delusional when it came to the bitter truths of reality.
Pete was this sort of man. When he heard that Luo Su wanted to make a report, he didn’t take it seriously and thought that Luo Su was making a joke. However, as they were all neighbors, and given that Luo Su had been getting on very well with Samantha’s daughter, Pete decided to say that he would report the matter to his superiors rather than accuse Luo Su of making a false report.
Helpless, Luo Su cursed and swore, and only then did Pete agree to come with him.
The World Mission was to ‘investigate the truth behind the spider mutations and destroy the source of the mutations.’ This was a rather fishy mission, and Luo Su knew that he would have to waste one of his cards to deal with all these spiders, a loss that he was not willing to take.
But if he had this world’s police with him, there was no reason for him to fight alone.
Pete and Luo Su went to the spider farm. This time, Luo Su didn’t sense any danger. Pete walked into the house like he was taking a stroll and then ran out in a panic.
The panicked Pete saw Luo Su and seemed to find his spine again. “Luo Su, it’s terrible! Joshua’s dead! What do I do…what do we do? Why don’t we call the cops!?”
Luo Su: “…”
You are the cops!
After a few moments, Pete realized what he had said. Awkwardly coughing, he took out his radio and called Samantha.
The signal was too bad, and all he could hear was static.
“Damn, I have to go back to town first!”
Pete got into his car in a panic. Luo Su, worried that he would crash the car, pushed him into the passenger seat. “Pete, what was it like inside? Were there no spiders?”
“Spiders?! What spiders? I didn’t see anything except that the shelves were in a complete mess…” After some thought, Pete continued, “With my many years of experience, I conclude that this was a robbery. The criminal fought with Joshua and killed him with a blunt instrument. After committing the crime, the criminal knocked over the shelves and destroyed the scene of the crime to confuse the police…by which I mean my eyes.”
Luo Su didn’t try to complain about Pete’s laziness. When he learned that there were no spiders in the house, his heart sank. These spiders were rather intelligent. They knew that he was leaving to call for help, and knowing that they weren’t strong enough yet, they had chosen to hide and build up their strength.
Luo Su hypothesized that if the spiders were not acting spontaneously and were also themselves very low in intelligence, there could be a second possibility: they could be listening to the orders of a leader, which would be the source of the mutations…
