Breakfast time.
The siblings Chenli and Daqing prepared plenty of fried egg noodles. The old couple Granny Wong and Uncle Liu were sitting together with the team of 5. Aside from Edward and Han Dong acting all normal, the other members of the film crew were more or less acting far from normal…
Putting down her bowl of noodle, Granny Wong spoke.
“The soul recovery ritual is scheduled to take place in Chenli’s room. I’ll now need to prepare in advance and set up the ritual site… We’ll notify all of you when the time comes. During the time we’re setting up the place, no one else is permitted to enter aside from my spouse. Any mistake might cause the ‘surrogate’ to be frightened off, understand?”
“Yes.”
There were still over 2 hours or so until the ritual began.
Edward suggested something for all of them to do in the meantime, and that was to determine the area of activity that they were allowed to operate without incurring any warnings.
Considering that the bungalow was the area where the ‘Accursed Chenli’ resided, there was a possibility that it might become a site of extreme danger as the situation developed.
Furthermore, the system had given them an activity area for over 500 meters. There was a need to affirm the general situation with the area, so they would be able to draw out a detailed map from it.
The newsboy Herbert mentioned that he had learned to draw from his father aside from selling newspapers. As long as the area was not too big, he would be able to create a fairly detailed map after walking around the area once.
“Leader… I’m not feeling too great…” Han Dong said.
Edward stared at the frail and skinny body Han Dong had that came from a lack of nutrition and smiled, “Then you may stay in your room and rest up. Leave the charting of our surroundings to us.”
“Thank you.”
As the interpreter of their group, no one could replace Han Dong, so no one had any outright issues with him wanting to rest.
When Edward led everyone and departed, Han Dong heaved a deep sigh and got ready to enact his plan.
Edward was a leader who would not intervene, and while that was ostensibly not a problem, it seemed as if it was the safest and most rational way to survive, but therein lies a huge problem.
Just how trustworthy is Edward?
While in a situation where the threat of death was terribly high, if they do not have a mind of their own and lacked any sort of way to escape or deal with what was happening, it would really be too foolish for anyone to simply wait for the danger to arrive.
Han Dong was actually quite similar to the baldy Darren in this sense.
He did not trust anyone from the very beginning, and now that they were at this juncture with life or death on the line, Han Dong did not believe that this group of strangers would be able to help one another.
“Uncle Liu, where are you off to?” Han Dong had coincidentally bumped into the spouse of Granny Wong by the stairs.
“I’m off to the city to buy some stuff for Granny Wong… There are some small objects that are needed for the ritual and its very complicated to explain everything. You won’t understand even if I tell you about them.”
“Okay.”
Han Dong returned to his room and took out the tools that he had previously prepared from inside his backpack. The rest of his teammates had used the 500 yuan that the system gave them to purchase necessities that they needed to survive, and he had used what money he had leftover to buy a few more sets of clothes, and one of which was the same as Uncle Liu’s.
‘Faceless One’s head’ had the impersonation ability. It was able to impersonate Han Dong’s face from his life before, so similar that he had not been able to differentiate himself when he used a mirror to examine his own features, and that was enough to illustrate the authenticity of his impersonation.
After taking some time to prepare, Han Dong was done with impersonating Uncle Liu and entered the ritual preparation room.
“Old Wong, what are you loitering about for? If you don’t have anything to do, come over and help set everything up.”
Now that Granny Wong was alone with her spouse, she completely lost the image that a ‘witch’ should maintain.
At the moment, she was sitting by the side of the bed playing with her handphone… There was not much that needed preparing beyond the tribute that they had laid out by a wooden table, and the so-called surrogate paper human that was casually placed in a corner of the room.
“Would it work placing it like that?” Han Dong was fiddling with the tribute offering that was placed on the table.
“It’s fine as long as it is tidy, why would there be so many rules… Just like what we did before and drug Chenli later. She’s not in good physical condition, so just ⅔ of the dosage would do. I’ve already got the antidote prepared, and we’ll do a 60/40 split after this is done.”
After hearing all of that, Han Dong finally understood how this famous Granny Wong ‘exorcised’ and ‘cure’ her clients.
“I understand…”
Han Dong immediately turned to leave the room and changed into another set of clothes. This time, he was impersonating the younger brother Daqing.
Before Han Dong went ahead and impersonated Daqing, he had already learned that the man had ridden out on his motorbike, taking a 2 hour journey to the nearby town so he could purchase food.
After all, they still needed to prepare a meal for at least seven people this afternoon.
Once he was done disguising himself accordingly, Han Dong tried to get into the role of Daqing… But this attempt was different from what he just did, and of course, there was no need to mention the danger of what he was doing this time round.
There was a huge possibility that the ‘Accursed Chenli’ was the ‘Evil Spirit’ for this event.
The wooden door to the living room on the first floor creaked as Han Dong pushed it open, the sluggish looking Chenli was currently resting on the couch. She was hardly any different from anyone else in the day, except that on the table in front of her was the sharp kitchen knife she used to chop vegetables… The blade gleamed coldly in the morning light.
“Sis, are you okay?”
“Close the door,” Chenli whispered in a low voice.
Han Dong maintained his composure and turned around to shut the door. He took a deep breath and prepared for the ensuing battle.
“Didn’t you go off to buy more food?” An icy cold voice could be heard from behind him.
Han Dong turned around to find Chenli already holding onto the kitchen knife, leaning forward, looking as if she was about to stand up.
Han Dong calmed his heart and did his best to imitate Daqing’s style of speech.
“Buying food isn’t important. I’m somewhat afraid that this ‘matter’ might not go so well.”
The words that Han Dong said were perfectly suited for his intentions. The ‘matter’ that he was referring to was of course regarding the ‘soul recovery ritual’… But if the siblings had anything secretly planned between them, he would also be able to coax it out as well.
But how was he to know that Chenli would not say a word. She slowly stood up, still clutching onto that kitchen knife… Her hair was also draped in front of her face as she leaned forward, with only her red lips visible.
When she got close to Han Dong…
WHOOSH!
Her knife slashed downward.
The sharp knife cut right into the wall beside Han Dong’s head… Right there and then, Han Dong and Chenli were no more than the space of a fist away from each other, and he could very clearly make out her bloodshot eyes.
“The students that had followed her are very troublesome. But we’ve already been preparing for so long, and this is our only chance at revenge. Proceed with the plan. Find a way to sabotage the van Granny Wong and the others came in. I’ll think of a method to scare all those university students away.”
Hearing such an answer, Han Dong sighed in relief.
In that moment when Chenli had swung her knife out, he had also been stunned… It was all thanks to his experience of having died that he had been able to suppress the nervousness that came with facing death right in the face.
Han Dong thought to himself: Sure enough, it was very important to have a measure of understanding toward the conditions of the country involved.
In China, the assessment of feudal superstitions was particularly severe… The background of local horror films would often end up being incidents that were caused by human hands. The moment the system stated that ‘The Cursed’ was a Chinese film, Han Dong began wondering if there were perhaps even any kind of ‘spirit’ or ‘ghost’ to the film at all.
It was based on this skepticism that he had that he dared to come into contact with Chenli alone.
Except… that moment before had really given him quite the scare, and his palms were sweating profusely. At this rate, the position of these key characters was extremely clear.
Granny Wong was merely masquerading as a fake ‘witch’, and a certain incident in the past must have caused the sibling to end up forming a grudge toward her.
Both Chenli and Daqing had simply wanted to lure Granny Wong and her spouse over, intending to take their revenge out here in the rural country.
But that was when a problem surfaced. Where was the evil spirit?
It was at that moment when the system solely chimed in Han Dong’s head.
