Actually, Han Dong’s intention from the very start was to use the impersonation ability to understand the key characters in the movie ‘The Cursed’ at a deeper level.
But how was he to know that this exchange would incidentally cause a side event to start up?
As for the Destiny card that might be rewarded upon event completion, Han Dong did not particularly put much thought toward it… After all, he still had no idea if he would be able to survive this event or otherwise.
What he valued more was the relationship between himself and the characters.
If he made the right choice and executed it appropriately, who was to say that he might increase the level of ‘intimacy’ with particular key characters, and they might even become helpers as a result.
After the conversation with Chenli ended, Han Dong returned back to his bedroom, removed his disguise, and was deep in thought.
Actually, removing the key character this time around, and to disregard the essence of the original movie as well as the relationship between the characters, there was still a huge problem that came to be.
Since the couple, Granny Wong and Uncle Liu, and the two siblings, Chenli and Daqing, were all considered normal human beings, then who would be the ‘evil spirit’?
There were only two possibilities:
The first was that the key character would turn into an evil spirit upon death.
The second was that the evil spirit actually had nothing to do with the key characters, but instead was lingering out in the wild.
Nevertheless, the chance of the first option being true seemed extremely slim. This was because of the fact that baldy Darren had indeed been killed last night… With the strong physique that Darren possessed, it was impossible for him to not make a sound if a normal human being were to ambush him. It was more likely that he had indeed been killed by some mysterious evil spirit.
“Wait a minute!”
The faces of the members of the team suddenly flashed in Han Dong’s mind.
“There’s also a third possibility… I hypothesize that there are only five humans that have come from the Holy City to participate in this Space of Destiny scenario, and the real ‘evil spirit’ might be the sixth individual that has managed to mix into our midst.”
Han Dong did not know why, but his intuition informed him that there was a very high possibility for the third option to be true.
“If that is really the case, and I intend to survive with the physical body I now possess, I’ll have to leverage on this side event… Try and cultivate my relationship with the key characters.”
Han Dong had already decided on how he was going to proceed.
There was still a little over an hour until the ‘soul recovery ritual’ started. Edward and the others were also still searching the surroundings while drawing a simple map of the place.
Han Dong reverted himself back to his original look, going down the steps as the real Nicholas, bumping into the ‘Accursed Chenli’ once again.
Her original plan was to scare off this group of university students before making their move on the old couple Granny Wong and Uncle Liu. As such, when Han Dong went into the living room all by himself, Chenli was sitting down on a chair with her hair let loose.
She was still holding onto the kitchen knife in her hands.
When Han Dong stepped into the room, he took the initiative to close the wooden door and took stock of his own emotions as he got ready to act.
“Miss Chenli… My name’s Edward Valen, and I wish to speak to you about something with regards to Granny Wong.”
Han Don purposely leaned toward Chenli, staring at that kitchen knife she had in her hand.
“I’m not like them. I’m a Chinese foreign-mix, and my mother is Chinese as well… This documentary shooting had also been organized upon my proposal. Our goal is to expose Granny Wong’s true colors and cause her to be punished by law. But… I’m not content with this! Without any actual proof, she will only end up being jailed for a short period of time, and that is nowhere near enough to offset the sins she committed. My mother had once been harmed by Granny Wong.”
As Han Dong spilled his guts out about his ‘past’, the emotions and expressions that he showed were all befitting of what he said. Han Dong had often faked such emotions whenever he attended faculty gatherings.
Frankly speaking, Han Dong disliked getting along with people… But it was a necessity for work, and there was a need for him to join in these gatherings so that he could network. He was already a Chinese person in a foreign land, so in order to avoid being ostracized by the other lecturers and professors in the university, Han Dong needed to act warm, courteous, and friendly.
Chenli’s expression did not change. “You wish for her to… Directly disappear, correct?”
Han Dong looked confused, feigning ignorance about the fact that Chenli also hated Granny Wong, “You too, Miss Chen?”
“Me? Do you really think I’d spend money to let Granny Wong come and exorcise me? Hahaha… Don’t kid around. Without you guys, Granny Wong and Uncle Liu would have disappeared last night… This is even better! Originally, I was still wondering how I should ‘resolve’ your group of university students that had inserted yourselves into our plans out of nowhere.”
“And that plan is…” Han Dong tried to draw out Chenli’s plan.
“Granny Wong’s arrival here had already set her fate in stone. All you have to do is draw your friends away from this place and wait for the news of her death.”
Han Dong immediately answered, “No problem!”
As convincing as Han Dong’s acting was, Chenli was still very vigilant, and she did not tell him her plan straight away.
In her heart, only her younger brother Daqing was the only person whom she could trust.
“Why are you helping us?”
Han Dong shrugged, revealing a nonchalant expression, “Help you two? No… I merely want Granny Wong and her spouse to receive the retribution they deserve! The sooner the better!”
There was not a sound in that room for a good moment. And after 2 minutes passed…
After Chenli did not detect any lies or fabrication in Han Dong’s eyes, she put her kitchen knife down and quietly instructed, “Fine… If the plan goes without a hitch, my younger brother will sabotage Granny Wong’s vehicle and they will have to stay over for another night. The refreshment that the couple will be drinking tonight will have a certain amount of laxatives added. Then, my younger brother and I will make our move in the outdoor latrine. I’ll need you to be in charge of watching your fellow students; make sure they do not leave their rooms in the middle of the night, and definitely do not let them get anywhere near the latrine. The next day, I just need you to tell all your friends that Granny Wong and Uncle Liu had left after repairing the van early in the morning and headed back to the village in advance. That will be when my younger brother will rent a vehicle and send all of you back into the city.”
“That works!”
It was just as Han Dong gave this reply when Chenli dashed forward at an incredible speed out of the blue. Her face was suddenly very close to Han Dong’s, and Han Dong could hear her lips softly whisper by his ear, “If anyone of you discovers anything when you get near the latrine… We’ll have to kill all of you as well. Got it?”
“I understand.”
The negotiation was a success. Han Dong had chosen to assist the siblings in this side event.
The reason for this choice was very simple: siding with the siblings that were determined to get their revenge, yet were also kind enough to not wish to unnecessarily bring disaster to these university students was most definitely more ‘useful’ than teaming up with the unconscionable couple that was spreading lies and scamming people everywhere.
Granny Wong and her spouse were a pair that would only act when they were able to benefit from their involvement. Even if Han Dong were to help them and save their lives… The moment he was the one whose life’s at stake, those two would most definitely turn tail and flee at the first opportunity. There was essentially no value in establishing a good relationship with the old couple.
And so, it did not take too long for Han Dong to return back to his room. When the time came, Granny Wong called everyone into room 6 and asked the ‘Accursed Chenli’ to lie on her bed.
The ‘soul recovery ritual’ began.
Because of Han Dong’s intervention, there were changes to the plot of the movie.
Originally, Chenli was ready to go crazy during the ritual, but now she had chosen to remain calmly lying on her bed, quietly waiting for the ‘soul recovery’ to end.
She forced herself to drink the talisman water that Granny Wong had prepared, revealing a smile after the deed, pretending that the evil within her body had been exorcised.
“The ritual was a success,” Daqing’s acting skill really left Han Dong amazed.
The younger brother had actually knelt down on the ground and hugged Granny Wong’s thighs, crying uglily as he declared the old woman his ‘benefactor’. He then handed over the fees he had previously set aside for the ritual over to the couple.
After resting for a while, Granny Wong and her spouse no longer needed to stay after they were done with lunch. Because Han Dong and the others were restricted from leaving the villa, he explained that they needed to wait till Chenli made a full recovery and interview her about her experience undergoing the ‘soul recovery ritual’ before they could complete the filming of their documentary in totality.
Just like that, the couple was the first to make their return back to their village.
But of course… Daqing had secretly sabotaged the couple’s van by this time.
And in under an hour, because something went awry with the vehicle as they made their way out, there was no way that they could walk back home in this fashion considering it was a five hour drive… Granny Wong and Uncle Liu had no choice but to return back to the villa, using the phone line to call for a vehicle repair team from the city to come over and take a look.
The first step for the revenge plan has been a success.
It was now time for the second night in the abandoned bungalow….
(author’s note: The characters in the Space of Destiny are completely fabricated. They do not exist In real life)
