Chapter 19: Chapter 19 – Death?

“This body is really… hard to bear. Even after resting for such a long time, and with hardly any interrupted sleep, I can clearly already feel that my body is at its limit after walking such a short distance.”
Countdown timer: 8 hours.
Making the trek up the mountain, Han Dong pretty much had to rest several minutes after every four or five steps up… His lung capacity was pretty much insufficient, and both his thighs burned and shook due to the lack of regular exercise as well as the absence of the vitamins he needed.
As for his companion, the acolyte Ackmann, she was actually in a much better physical shape compared to Han Dong. She was clutching her crucifix very tightly, with visibly deep dark circles around her eyes. Her expression was pretty much devoid of any hope, sticking to Han Dong every moment despite the fact that there was essentially no value in relying on Han Dong given his physical condition.
Han Dong had discovered a mark for a building on the map, “There should be a small farmer’s quarters up ahead. Should we go in and hide ourselves?”
Soon, their flashlights were pointed in the direction of a stone and brick house that was situated around the middle of the mountain. It was only single-storey and there were plenty of cracks running along the walls, making it very apparent that it had been deserted for a long time.
Han Dong was truly at his limit by this time and no longer able to hold on. He could even feel his body on the verge of collapsing and shutting down… No matter how rundown the place was, all he could do was head in and rest for a while.
Just as he entered the abandoned building, a bolt of lightning streaked across the night sky as the rumble from the thunder soon followed.
A heavy downpour started not too long after.
It was a good thing that the roof of the house was tightly laid, so there was no leaking roof situation or anything like that. Otherwise, if Han Dong found himself drenched as a result of the change in weather, he might very well fall sick in the final few hours left in this event and everything would be over.
The two of them leaned against the wall in the foyer area. Han Dong quickly pulled out some high calorie food from his backpack, as well as a pre-prepared bottle of Banlangen infused herbal tea, preventing him from illness at the same time replenishing his energy.
In contrast to Han Dong, the acolyte Ackmann was somewhat calm sitting across him.
Since she had nothing to eat and had not said anything to that effect; all she did was grip her crucifix tightly and stare forward blankly.
The two of them sat there quietly, listening to the sound of the heavy rain outside for about 5 minutes when Ackmann spoke up all of a sudden.
“Do you know? There’s this basement similar to this under the church, dark and damp… Every night, after volunteering, the priest would request that I head down there for a while.”
“Mmhmm…” Han Dong could smell a strange smell.
“Even though I was not too willing… I had no choice. If I didn’t bring money home, my father would beat me, and he hurts a lot harder than the priest. I have to be obedient, and only when I am obedient would I be able to bring money back.”
Ackmann got more and more agitated as she spoke, even beginning to use her fingers to claw at the dirt beneath her forcefully.
“You know… I could officially become a member of the church if I continued to persevere for a few more months, and then I could have a fixed salary every month! That would allow me to have more and more contact with other people, and my life would be right back on track. But it was during this time! My father actually stopped me from continuing my work at the church; he owed someone too heavy a debt and needed to sell me off in order to cover it. No… I refused! After I ‘dealt with’ my father, I could only head to the church and search for the priest since I no longer had a home to return to. But the priest that had always been ‘very nice’ to me suddenly sang a different tune, no longer willing to let me work in the church and had even gotten people to chase me away! I really don’t wish for this… I really just want to have a simple life, that’s all. Do you understand how I feel?!?!”
*Crack crack crack*
All of a sudden, Ackman’s body made a series of strange sounds as her joints twisted joints abnormally, shifting from a sitting position to that of a crawling state.
Han Dong immediately used the link that his Prison had and established a connection with Chenli and sent her an urgent message… Whether she would succeed would decide Han Dong’s survival.
Ackmann was now in a crawling posture, her hair floating in the air.
Han Dong’s guess had been correct. The real evil spirit had managed to blend in with their team of six. She possessed a speed that was faster than what Han Dong could discern with his eyes, as her ten fingers were already attached to the sides of Han Dong’s cheeks.
The familiar sensation of death came.
It was the same feeling that he felt when he had been lying on that hospital bed, the moment when he experienced respiratory failure… Except his death would be a lot faster this time.
“Wait a minute… Can you let me end myself? It’s not like I can survive for any much longer after anyway.”
Han Dong had said this even as he pulled out the knife he had brought along and held it before his own neck.
His words had caused the evil spirit Ackmann to stop what she was doing.
Han Dong’s expression was completely different from the other two… She was unable to find the fear in Han Dong’s eyes that she saw in the others before they died.
She had been watching Han Dong’s physical condition as they climbed up the mountain trail; such a weak human was completely incapable of escaping, much less surviving.
In Ackmann’s eyes, this ‘Nicholas’ youth had suddenly become interesting.
“… I’ll give you a minute.”
Han Dong revealed a helpless smile, “Thank you. I have a question before I die. Why didn’t you just kill most of us on the first night? Since the memory of the deceased would be wiped from the key characters upon death, that would hardly be disadvantageous for you, right?”
While Han Dong was asking his question, the knife in his hand had already pierced his skin.
Ackmann was not in the least bit alert against him. Because she was interested in him and had already determined that there was no way that he could stay alive any longer, she decided to answer this question before he died.
“I was only allowed to kill once a day in the first few days! Also, I am only allowed to act at night. Only in the final 3 hours of this game would the restrictions ease up… Do you get it? I’m going to kill all of you in these final few hours, so don’t worry, the rest will be joining you soon.”
Han Dong’s initial guess was confirmed once more.
There were indeed limitations.
“Thank you,” Han Dong did not hesitate too much. With the blade slicing past his neck, the depth of his clean cut was enough to be fatal…
His weak body was completely incapable of withstanding such a heavy cut and as his pupils slowly lost its luster, his body slumped onto the wall and died just like that.
Soon, Ackmann received her own prompt from the system.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Because a survivor has died, the cooldown for the next kill is now set at 4 hours… Current survivor count: 2.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
As such, Ackmann no longer stayed around and crawled out of the abandoned building on all fours like a spider, heading down the mountain to chase after the escaping Edward and Monica.
———————————–
Down on the mountain, inside an abandoned farmhouse, blondie Monica was staring with two eyes, staring at her indifferent team leader, Edward, with resentment in her eyes.
A steam prosthetic had penetrated her abdomen.
“Why…” Monica had thought that she would die at the hands of the evil spirit, not by the lifeline that she had wanted to rely on.
“Because of her!”
Edward was looking straight at the woman in the red dress that was standing silently among the trees.
“You humble peasants were destined to be food from the very moment you entered the Space of Destiny. All of you exist only for me to buy time for myself.”
Edward’s image of a good person crumbled instantly.
As Monica collapsed to the ground, the woman in red that had been wandering about in the forest departed as well…
Witnessing this scene, Edward let loose a sigh of relief.
“I did not expect my luck to be so poor that the evil spirit would actually chase after me first… I’ll need to meet up with the weakest duo and continue to use their ‘time’.”
After a short rest, Edward swiftly began his climb up the mountain!
