Higher lifeforms.
Space of Destiny.
Mechanical City state.
Alchemy.
Then there was also the next step of his body acquisition, as well as his research into Mysticism and other such matters.
Han Dong was lying on his bed, his head filled with all these thoughts. He had unknowingly spent several hours mulling over everything in such a fashion until he finally fell asleep at around three or four in the morning.
As a researcher, he had a love for novelty and all things new, even going so far as to become obsessed over them.
Because of how late he slept, this one sleep went on till he was jolted awake by a commotion outside the door.
“What’s the matter, what’s all this racket about?”
Han Dong stretched his back and pressed himself against the door to his bedroom to eavesdrop.
He heard several words like ‘mandatory conscription’ as well as ‘tax collection’.
“The mandatory conscription should be referring to the compelling of youths to join the Space of Destiny… Throwing a large number of lives out in exchange for a handful of returnees, right? Last night Nina had said that because I am now a returnee, she would also be able to avoid being forcibly conscripted. Looks like the administrator for the Commoner’s District isn’t kept very well-informed.”
Han Dong opened the door and stepped out.
He saw two men standing there dressed in blue linen uniforms. They were security officers who had five pointed star badges pinned to their chests, and both men were getting Nina to wear a clockwork device right at their doorstep.
“What are you guys doing?”
When they heard Han Dong’s voice, the respectively tall and rotund pair of officers tossed out a look of suspicion, taking in Han Dong’s scrawny physique as the rotund officer immediately chortled, “Hahaha, you’re a returnee? … To be able to survive the Space of Destiny with your physical fitness, don’t make me laugh!”
The other tall and skinny man had a sly look to him, immediately spotting the clockwork device that Han Dong was wearing.
“Oh? You’re wearing a clockwork device… To think you actually dare to go against the orders of the parliament and skip the last Space of Destiny!”
To these two men, elites that were able to become returnees would rarely come from the Commoner’s District, and it was even less likely for them to be a malnourished youth that was living in such destitution.
As such, the two men had immediately deemed Han Dong to be a deserter who had been unwilling to participate in the Space of Destiny out of fear when they saw the clockwork device that he was wearing.
According to the charter set forth by the parliament, any deserter would be deprived of their right to live and be sold as slaves, used as bait by the Knights, or simply sentenced to be executed.
The two men pushed aside Nina and her mother, pulling out a set of iron handcuffs and planned to cuff Han Dong and haul him away.
“Let go of my big brother…”
Nina stepped up and tried her best to stop them.
“What a nuisance!” one of them got impatient and was about to slap Nina right across her cheek when a look filled with murderous intent was aimed at the two officers almost immediately.
Han Dong had reached out his thin and scrawny arm and stopped the skinny man from doing so.
Even if Han Dong’s strength was pitifully weak, he demonstrated a strong conviction that came from his brain.
This idea transmitted through their eyes and physical contact made the two security officers a little frightened, causing them to immediately stop what they were doing.
“Nina, accompany mom and stay at home. I’ll be back once I make the trip with them.”
Han Dong revealed a nonchalant smile, the very same that he had shown right before he entered the Space of Destiny… This caused the anxious Nina, who was nearly on the verge of tears by this point, to calm herself slightly and helped their mother to the side.
The rotund officer laughed mockingly, “You’re still thinking about coming back? This isn’t just your problem alone; Once you’re sentenced for your attempt at escaping the Space of Destiny, they would also be punished as well! I wonder if your sister would end up being sold as a slave? It’s such a pity she doesn’t have too good a complexion, so she probably wouldn’t be worth much, haha.”
“Charles, what are you spouting all this nonsense for? Take that rascal back to the station and we’ll be able to get a generous reward for apprehending him.”
The skinny and tall security officer easily removed himself from Han Dong’s grasp, not dwelling on that instance of fear that he had felt from before as he swiftly locked Han Dong’s two hands with an iron chain.
“Oh yeah… Let’s take the time off tonight to visit Mona’s Tavern and have fun! I heard they’ve got new goods recently.”
The two got more and more energetic as they chatted, grabbing Han Dong as they headed to the local police station.
While he was being escorted, a voice that was filled with resentment and rage echoed in Han Dong’s mind, “Shall I kill them!?!”
“No… I’m deliberately doing this, and at the same time getting a better understanding of the public security management policy here. Miss Chenli, rest well. I’ll call on you when I am in definite danger.”
Han Dong was comforted, never expecting that Chenli would be taking note of his situation at this time.
As he was being escorted, the skinny security officer whom he had reached out to stop would turn around from time to time, always feeling like there was something strange about Han Dong… But they had indeed not received any news from their higher ups.
Generally, if a returnee had appeared in a district, the higher ups would all be informed and would place the returnee and his or her family onto a separate list that granted them special treatment.
The Samuel Street Public Security Branch
“The Security Chief had gone out for the moment… You better be careful staying inside the cell; don’t die.”
Unlike the usual detention centers, this Security Branch did not divide their underground detention room into separate holding cells, so all the people who had committed crimes were all put together in one place.
The only thing they did was to split up the men and the women.
Even though such an arrangement was not fatal, there were quite a few detainees who found themselves having to be lifted out after suffering heavy injuries, with many who were seriously injured in their butts.
No matter where Han Dong went, he would forever be the weakest in terms of his physical fitness.
The moment he stepped into the detention room, there were instantly ‘big brothers’ who were interested in the scrawny Han Dong.
At this rate, he was not going to be lonely even if he were detained here for several days.
——————————–
Back inside the station, the tall and skinny security officer was asking, “Hey Charles. Where did the boss run off to? Why isn’t he back yet? I’m afraid that we might lose our bonus if the rascal we caught doesn’t make it. He might be in serious danger after several of those large men take their turns with him.”
“Relax… Those guys below aren’t idiots either. They are just lowly criminals and thieves… Things won’t be the same if someone died, so everything’s going to be fine. I heard the boss had been called over by the higher ups this morning. I’m sure he’ll be back once he’s done with his task.”
These security officers were not capable people and were no more than the average citizen that came from middle-class families. They had all gotten their jobs mainly because some distant relative of theirs had become a returnee and they managed to redirect a bit of the glory to themselves, passing the basic security officer test since they all had fairly decent physical constitutions to boot.
All of them had a stable income and did not need to be conscripted. In terms of their bravery, the fact that they were not even willing to come into contact with the Space of Destiny spoke volumes.
An hour later, the sound of galloping arrived by the entrance of the Public Security Branch.
A middle aged man wearing a top hat, decked out in a black coat with a silver badge pinned on his chest came walking in.
“Security Chief Dace! We discovered a deserter when we were searching houses in the Commoner’s District, and have him locked up below right now.”
When the Security Chief heard this, he immediately became infuriated!
The thing that this man despised the most was people who brazenly violated the Supreme Charter established by the parliament, deserters who opted to not participate in the Space of Destiny because of their own frailty.
Had this been any other day, he would most definitely make his way down to the detention room post haste and violently beat up the youth before sending him off to the court.
However, today was special.
When the Security Chief entered the branch station, he had been grinning from ear to ear… He had been called out at the last minute this morning for a single matter.
A returnee had come from the Commoner’s District that he supervised.
