“A returnee from Samuel Commoner’s District had gotten a very decent interview result, and had managed to achieve admission into the Academy.”
This had become a hot topic of discussion among the dozen or so employed in their Public Security Branch.
After all, Samuel Commoner’s District had been considered to be the worst out of the four major Commoner’s Districts.
Nobody had expected that someone born from such a poverty stricken environment where the people were unable to have access to basic education would be able to clear the interview and get admitted to the National Royal Knights’ Academy, becoming a Trainee Knight.
This was a huge event, something that had not happened in the recent few years.
Of course, just as everyone was discussing this with great enthusiasm… The two officers that had just captured Han Dong felt their hearts tighten.
The tall man was somewhat worried, “Charles… It couldn’t be the youth that we detained, right?”
“That’s impossible. You saw how scrawny and feeble he looked. He did not even give off a bit of pressure when we escorted him back. How could such a person be a Trainee Knight?”
“Haha, you’re right. If someone like that boy can even become a Trainee Knight… So can we!”
The two of them consoled themselves as they tried to get more information from their colleagues.
The security officer that was in charge of the Parade Square these past few days began to talk about this unusual returnee.
“I remember him! I recall that there was indeed a returnee that had appeared in the middle of the square who was immediately picked up by a Black Rose cavalier and brought for his interview… Even though I was really far away, I could tell just how fearsome that person looked. That person looked so huge from behind when I saw him depart!”
“That’s right! I’ve also heard people talk about how they could tell that the returnee that appeared yesterday afternoon was anything but simple… Perhaps he was a genius commoner who had naturally abnormal strength!”
Hearing such a description, the portly Charles and tall Braun cleared the doubts that lingered within them; it did not sound like this returnee looked anywhere near what the deserter that they had caught looked like.
After Security Chief Dace rested for a bit, he called out, “I’ll personally go and bring this Nicholas Valen to our branch and carry out the relevant registration and file transfer… We’ll talk about the deserter the two of you caught later.”
“Okay!” These two men had not even asked Han Dong for his name, so neither was none the wiser.
For the Security Chief to personally pay a visit, it clearly showed the Trainee Knight’s status here in this Commoner’s District.
Security Chief Dace changed out to something more casual and went out to Nicholas’ place of residence all by himself.
After all, a certain level of discretion and secrecy was needed when it came to returnees.
If some people with evil intentions were to learn about his or her identity, they might jeopardize the safety of a returnee who might be in a weakened state having just made his or her escape from the Space of Destiny.
Checking the address listed in his file, he managed to locate the apartment that Nicholas and his family stayed.
“WHAT? HE GOT TAKEN AWAY!?!?!”
After hearing Nina explain what had happened, Dace immediately thought about the deserter that his men said they had detained.
The Security Chief was furious, and also nervous to the point he was breaking out in cold sweats.
If this returnee was the type that would hold a grudge, he would be in deep trouble from here onward.
Dace had not gotten the job as a Security Chief through his family background or other connections, but because he was also a returnee himself.
However, he did not manage to pass his interview because he had merely cleared a 1-star Destiny event and had only cleared it purely by a fluke.
Despite this, it was enough for him to be appointed to the Public Security Branch in Samuel Commoner’s District, becoming the Security Chief for over the last ten years.
“What bad luck, those inbred fools are not only just incompetent but their stupidity has actually affected the whole branch. I’ll have to be stricter with my choice of security officers from today onward… I sincerely hope that our friend Nicholas would not be too fussed over what has happened.”
Dace privately pulled out five copper coins and handed it to the girl in front of him, at the same time doing a full 90 degree bow to apologize for what happened.
“I am truly sorry for the mistake that we’ve made while doing our jobs! This is my personal way of apology, our Security Branch will be sure to extend our sincere apology as well at a later period.”
Nina had never seen so much money before, and it had all come from the Samuel Commoner’s District’s Security Chief himself… She accepted the coins in a daze and saw Dace lower his head to apologize once more before running off to get back to his station as fast as he could.
At this very moment, the tall and rotund pair were still laughing uproariously, chatting about how they would spend their bonus and indulge themselves tonight.
—————————-
Just as Security Chief Dace was heading back to his security branch as quickly as he could, he heard the sound of a metallic warhorse galloping coming up right toward him as he was about to cross the final street.
It was a steam-powered metallic black horse bearing the Black Rose insignia on its chest.
A noble cavalier from the Black Rose Cavalry Brigade had arrived. Everyone on the street nearby, including Dace himself, had their heads lowered.
“Sir Knight, is there anything I could help with? I am the Security Chief of Samuel Commoner’s District, Dace Fodland.”
“I believe Nicholas Valen is someone from your district, yes?”
“Indeed!”
“I would like to get some information about his life before he was a returnee. I do believe you people from the Public Security Branch should have kept census records of all the people under your jurisdiction every year.”
“But of course… Right this way, sir.”
Anxiety was building up in Dace.
This was a member of the Black Rose Cavalry Brigade, someone who had graduated from the Knights’ Academy; a high ranking Knight who had the ability to venture beyond the city walls and combat with the higher lifeforms.
In terms of rank, Dace was hardly comparable to a fart in the face of this Knight, despite being a Security Chief of a Commoner’s District.
Such a person was also far stronger than the average returnee, and Dace had no idea why someone like this would personally make the trip down for a returnee.
“Sir Knight, this Valen friend of yours… Is something the matter?”
“It’s simply my personal interest, so just hand over the information you have on him and that would do.”
This was the cavalier that had sent Han Dong back to the Parade Square yesterday, Fergus Barton. He had come over specifically to check on Han Dong’s life experience before he entered the Space of Destiny.”
The moment Fergus crossed the transom of the station office, the entire branch instantly fell silent.
“Sir Knight, please take a seat. I’ll immediately send for the staff in charge of our Archives to pull out the relevant information.”
Fergus stared at the sweating Security Chief and said, “Speaking of which, why are you so nervous seeing me here? You should also be a returnee as well since you’re posted as a Security Chief here, no? You’re just lacking in terms of strength, but there’s no need to be so wound up. Relax. I was originally a commoner myself.”
“Haha… I’m not nervous.”
Dace flashed a very forceful smile.
How could he not be nervous knowing that the person in question that everyone had their attention toward was actually being held captive in their underground detention room?
Dace could very well lose his job as a Security Chief if this cavalier was to find out.
The only thing that Dace could do now was to hand over the information that Fergus was seeking and send the cavalier off before he handles the mess that his idiotic underlings had caused.
He would then use plenty of funds to try and privately settle this matter with Nicholas.
However, just as the cavalier Fergus got a hold of the relevant files he was looking for.
*AHHHHH! AHHHHH!*
Shrill screams came from the underground detention room, the sort of commotion that felt like someone had lost their life.
“Commoner Districts are still such a mess…” Cavalier Fergus sighed as he got up and headed down to check out the underground detention room.
Security Chief Dace was so flustered to the point that his cheeks were flushed red, but he did not dare to step forward and stop the Knight.
As for the rotund security officer Charles and the taller Braun, neither man had realized the severity of the situation at hand.
The two of them had even pulled out their security batons, pretending to be very resolute as they planned to head on down and suppress the victims in an effort to put on a serious performance in front of a noble cavalier.
As the four descended the stairs and came to the large detainment cell, the situation inside had shocked everyone, even cavalier Fergus.
The frail Han Dong had not been ‘initiated’ by his cellmates, and was sitting with the wall to his back all by himself, recuperating in a resting pose.
However, the other hulking bullies and ruffians that shared the cell with him were all gathered in the opposite corner to Han Dong’s own, their fear evident in their eyes…
Furthermore, there were two men collapsed on the ground, foam frothing from their mouths.
