Chapter 8: The Woman in the Grass
Translator: Atlas Studios Editor: Atlas Studios
This was the wilderness, yet there was a dying woman lying in the grass. Obviously, something must have happened here.
Qin Yiling had no intention of prying into other people’s privacy, but since she happened to stumble upon finding her, she couldn’t just leave her be, right?
She reached out to touch the woman’s forehead, but it felt so cold that she was startled and immediately withdrew her hand.
Her forehead was so cold that it was almost abnormal.
She then took a closer look at the woman’s face. Her lips were dry and cracked, with a hint of dark purple. Her chest was rising and falling very slowly, and her face looked pallid.
Suddenly, Qin Yiling came to a realization: this woman was running out of time.
It probably took all of her remaining strength and energy to make the rustling noises earlier.
Initially, Qin Yiling had wanted to open her suitcase for some pills to feed to the woman, hoping to help ease her a little. However, it seemed like that would be of no use now. Her pharmaceutical skills were not bad, but the medicine she made was not miracle medicine. It couldn’t revive a dying person.
Still, she opened her bamboo suitcase and took out an army-green water bottle. She poured water into the bottle cap and fed it to the woman. Fortunately, she was still conscious and swallowed the water.
After the woman finished the water in the bottle cap, Qin Yiling gently asked her some questions.
“Can you hear me? Do you need my help?”
After finishing her questions, she looked intently at the woman, who only trembled a few times before finally speaking in a weak voice.
“Help… me…”
The woman reached into the pocket of her tattered winter jacket, took out an old, yellowed envelope, then slowly and laboriously lifted her hand.
Qin Yiling understood her intention. “You want to give it to me?”
The woman answered weakly, “Can you help… me… send… this letter…”
Noticing how strenuous it was for the woman to speak, Qin Yiling spoke hurriedly, “You want me to deliver the letter for you?” She skimmed the envelope and saw an address written on it.
This woman must have guessed that she wasn’t going to make it, so she was asking for a favor, to pass this letter to its recipient.
“Mhm~” The corners of the woman’s mouth rose up slightly. She looked relieved, but her eyes still betrayed a sense of reluctance and regret.
Qin Yiling’s heart ached at the sight of this, but even though she knew a lot about medicine, she was no doctor.
“Don’t worry, I’ll help you deliver this letter into the hands of the recipient.”
This woman was in an extremely weak condition. The reason she had held on all this while was probably because she was waiting for someone to entrust this letter to. It was obvious how much this letter meant to her.
Upon hearing that, she smiled feebly, lacking the strength to say anything else.
“So exhausted!”
“It’s finally time to take a rest in peace.”
The woman slowly closed her eyes.
“Sigh…” Qin Yiling sighed helplessly. When faced with the dwindling of life, no matter how smart or powerful a person was, there was nothing they could do.
Looking around at the stretch of barren land, then at the woman who had already breathed her last, Qin Yiling sighed once more. Since she had decided to help, she might as well help all the way.
So, she spent half an hour digging a pit and using her Swiss Army knife to cut some dried grass, then spreading them into the pit. There was no other choice. They were surrounded with nothing but dried grass, so it was not like she could use anything else.
After that, she exerted some strength to get the woman into the pit, then covered her body with a thick layer of dried grass, such that it symbolized a straw mat..
