Chapter 31: Colossi Warbear

It was past four in the morning, the darkest moment at dawn, when four buses were traveling on Sucheng City’s ring road.
In the warm, dark cabin, whispers were heard occasionally. Most of the classmates were asleep while Shao Zifeng was sitting in the seat by the window, beside him a medium-built boy leaning back and snoring in his sleep.
Rarely had anyone ever sat so close to Shao Zifeng. He shifted closer to the window, but the snore just kept coming.
He leaned his head against the window as he wondered if Ballie was asleep now.
As he still failed to contact Ballie, and that annoying snore was getting on his nerves, he felt more the more upset.
He tried hard to control his negative emotions while convincing himself that Ballie was just sleeping.
…
Three of the four buses in the convoy had turned off the ramps a while ago. This bus of Class 4 was the only one left still traveling in the dark.
The four classes of the Year 2 Combat Training of Sucheng University had different training grounds. The training ground of Shao Zifeng’s Class 4 was in a place called Wutong Mountain. Legend had it that there was a Qifeng Temple on the mountain where a thousand-year-old parasol tree grew. It was said that a phoenix used to nest there a thousand years ago.
Because of the uncontrollable risks in the wild, people were staying in the villages near the urban centers, and most villages and towns in the remote countryside had been abandoned. This legendary Taoist temple had been left alone for years.
It was the first light. Venus was still quietly hanging in the dark-blue night sky, but the undulations of the hill started to show up on the horizon. Although that was only a mound-like hill, it was the most famous hill in the plain of Sucheng City.
The road condition was getting bumpier as they went. The dark and dense forest was on both sides of the road. They occasionally passed by some open fields overgrown with weeds and shrubs. The bumpy ride jolted those sleeping classmates out of their sleep. They put their faces on the glass as they curiously peeked out from the window, exclaiming in awe and talking in a low voice from time to time.
This was a generation that was born in the city. They were well protected by the country and their parents. The only wilderness they saw was through their computer screens and mobile phones. It was their first time encountering the real wilderness, and they could not hold back their excitement.
“Look! There is a village down the hill! That’s so beautiful!”
A girl exclaimed in awe, making the others get even more curious. They stretched their necks and scrambled to look ahead.
Shao Zifeng did the same too. He saw the silhouette of roofs not far ahead, half-blocked by the trees. Vines had covered the rooftops. As the morning sun shone down on the earth, the place exuded a vibe of vitality. The combination of man-made structure and the reclamation of nature was a beauty that came straight out of fairy tales.
The bus was getting near to the village and trundling past a road sign half-covered by green vines and rust. He could vaguely make out the words ‘Qifeng Village.’
A few students leaning against the window smashed their faces against the glass when the bus suddenly braked with a loud screeching sound. A round of cursing and painful cries rose.
“Wahahaha, kids, shouldn’t you all be happy that I become your driver right now?”
The grumbling voices in the cabin stopped as soon as a forceful voice came from the driver’s seat. All eyes were on the driver.
A bald head slowly rose from the driver’s seat and reflected a fleeting beam of sunlight as it went.
Qiang needed to stretch after driving for a long distance, not knowing that he was too tall for the cabin and hitting his head on the roof.
This was a specially built bus, and Shao Zifeng could almost feel the pain.
A few girls could not hold back their laughter. The atmosphere in the cabin instantly eased up with a few more boys bursting out in laughter.
Qiang was not angry at all, just rubbing his head and grinning at seeing the relaxed atmosphere in the cabin.
“All right, that’s enough. You all can laugh all you want during the exploration in the wilderness. Take your luggage and follow me.” Qiang looked at these kids with a grin. Compared to the revenge that he was going to get later, this little embarrassment was nothing.
Shao Zifeng carried his duffle bag and drew in the refreshing air of the wilderness into his lungs. He felt better now. He could come and go into any cities and towns in the other space and time, but a home person like him had no time for that. He would prefer to spend time playing with his snake.
The place where they disembarked was in front of a house fully encroached by green vines. There was a tiny square here, supposedly a place where the villagers dried their wheat, were now covered in grass and exuding a sense of serenity.
“Twenty-one. Not one lesser. You all are truly my students, no one loser. Now you all can summon your pet beast.” Qiang nodded after counting the heads.
Those Class 4 students could not wait to call out their pet beasts when hearing what Qiang said. Next second, as translucent dimensional fissures appeared in the air, various small pet beasts emerged. As they ran wild on the grassland, the surrounding atmosphere instantly became as lively as it could get.
Shao Zifeng looked on and found that most of the pet beasts were of domestic species such as cat, dog, chicken, and duck. There were a few mice and sparrows too.
The accreditations of these creatures were one star at the most. So Shao Zifeng quickly lost his interest.
Watching the tiny square turned into an animal farm, an evil grin appeared on Qiang’s face as he waved his hand in the air.
An ear-shattering roar came as a dimensional fissure opened out of thin air. Those free-running pet beasts on the grassland froze, as if spellbound, standing on the spot and quaking in their boots. Meanwhile, their masters were no better. Some students got weak on the knees and dropped sitting to the ground.
Shao Zifeng’s face was pale, his body shivering. This feeling seemed to remind him of that night, but it was more intimidating than the Bloodsiphon Tarantula.
He fought back his shivering and looked at Qiang.
A giant furry paw poked out of the dimensional fissure, followed by its skull, body, and last, a bear appeared in front of his eyes.
The bear stood with two legs and roared again.
“That’s enough. Stop howling. Yeah, you are the best.” Qiang gave the bear a kick in its butt and the roar halted. The bear looked down at Qiang, then at those shivering little pet beasts in the square, and scratched its head apologetically as it dropped its butt on the grassland, sending tremor to the ground.
Shao Zifeng looked at the giant bear in awe. Qiang, who stood over two meters tall, looked short and skinny beside the sitting giant bear.
The Goldfinger with terrible latency started with a pop-up virtual display.
