Chapter 119.1 – Praying for Salvation
The north wind howled and heavy snow descended. Everything between heaven and earth was dim, as if an unexplained depression was covering them.
The winter in Rong had always been very cold, and the heavy snow that began falling at some point almost blocked everyone’s vision. In such a bad weather, there were naturally fewer people going out, and even the guard soldiers at the city gate had become more lax.
A soldier looked around and saw no outsiders passing by. The howling cold wind was a little unbearable, so he secretly took off the water bag on his waist to take a sip. Of course, it wasn’t filled with water, but wine. The people of Rong were fond of drinking wine, and drinking a sip in this kind of weather could help warm your body up. So as long as they were not seen by outsiders, the commanding officer also turned a blind eye.
When the wine entered his mouth, it was like a ball of fire lit up from his mouth all the way to his stomach, and his whole body was instantly warmed up. A hint of joy appeared on the soldier’s almost frozen face. He looked at the wine bag then looked around again – seeing that the officer wasn’t around, he planned to take another sip.
While it was common to secretly drink wine to warm up while on duty, getting drunk was definitely not acceptable. Fortunately, most people still had this much self-control.
However, it was obvious that this soldier was greedy today, and wanted to drink more while the officer was away. But as soon as he raised his wine bag to his mouth, his companion suddenly pulled him and said, “Someone’s here, quick, put away the wine!”
It was a friendly reminder, but the pull was unfortunate. The soldier wasn’t holding it firmly, and his wine bag fell to the ground. The gurgling wine flowed out, spilling a large amount of alcohol on the ground, giving the soldier a heartache. He picked the wine bag up in a hurry, and the companions around him were also anxious and quickly kicked the snow to try and cover up the strong smell of wine.
The wind at the city’s gate was actually quite strong, and the alcohol would’ve dissipated in no time. But their luck was not very good – the heavy snow covered their vision, and the sound of the wind covered the sound of galloping hooves. It was so much that they failed to notice in advance the group that came riding horses.
The people riding their horses quickly approached, and what made them feel even more despair was that the leader was the cold and strict Left General!
The strong smell of alcohol had not dissipated yet, and it clearly showed everyone’s crime of drinking while on duty. After the Rong State was established, laws were established, and the military rules became stricter. Based on the military rules’ strict punishment, all the soldiers and the officer here would definitely suffer quite a bit.
The soldiers were so scared that their legs were trembling, as if they were going to kneel down and apologize right in the next moment. But the galloping horses in front of them did not slow down, and the entire team led by the Left General ran past them. The clapping sound of horse hooves came from far to near, then went from near to far, as if they were trampling on everyone’s hearts until it was finally gone.
After a while, someone raised his head and glanced at the direction where the Left General and the others had disappeared, whispering, “Has the Left General left?”
As his voice fell, the crowd looked up as if they had just woken from a dream. Then someone hesitated and asked, “Did they not smell the wine?”
The rest of the soldiers remained silent, because the smell of wine in the air was still very strong. Unless the group of people passing by just now all had their noses blocked by the cold, it was impossible for them not to smell it!
But right now, the Left General who was in a rush clearly had no time to pay attention to a few soldiers at the city gate. He led his remaining guards as they sprinted through the open street. Suddenly, a hidden arrow burst through the air! Fortunately, although it was covered by the wind and snow, he still managed to dodged it skillfully.
The Left General rode his horse without stopping and continued towards the direction of the palace, so what started as one arrow soon turned into a salvo.
It was almost unimaginable for anyone to be bold enough to assassinate an important official in the royal capital. However, the Left General did not panic, as if he had expected it. He drew out the blade on his waist and slashed left a right, easily cutting down a large number of arrows. Sometimes, he missed or two of them, but dodged them with an almost beast-like intuition, and remained unhurt under the rain of arrows.
Unfortunately, his guards clearly did not have such skills. Accompanied by a few wails, three to five people were shot down by the arrows and fell off their horses. The luckier ones immediately rolled to the side of the road to save themselves, while the unlucky ones fell right under their companions’ horse hooves, and the long street was soon smeared in blood.
The Left General’s expression turned even more ugly. He looked around, intending to spot the assassins firing arrows from the shadows, but they were very well hidden, and covered by the wind and snow. It was too hard to spot them in a short time!
Get entangled with the assassins, or rush to the palace immediately? The Left General naturally chose the latter.
The sound of horse hooves never stopped, and neither did the assassin’s pursuit.
When the Left General rode his horse to a crossroad, a thought suddenly flashed in his mind – the road to the left would lead him to his residence, while the one to the right would lead him to the palace. He had intended to turn right, but in the end, he took a sudden turn to the left. Maybe it was an unexpected move, or perhaps there was some other reason, but the pursuers on his back seemed to stop for a moment.
This short stop was enough for the Left General to understand something. He couldn’t help sneering under his thick beard, then he tapped his kicked lightly, and his well-trained horse immediately turned to the right.
Another arrow rain fell, but he skillfully dodged them.
The pursuit continued until the palace, but unfortunately, it couldn’t stop him in the end.
