Chapter 150.1 – Extra Chapter 9
Lu Sheng’s life was divided into two parts – before she was three, and after.
A three-year-old child could barely remember anything, but who knew whether it was because Lu Sheng was wise beyond her age or if there were other reasons, she could vaguely remember some fragments of the past. However, it was not a good thing.
Lu Sheng was a posthumous child who lost her father before she was even born. Since she was born, she was confined to living in a small courtyard. She never had to worry about food and clothing, but she never saw the world outside the courtyard. But with a wet nurse, mother and the occasional maid who accompanied her, the little Lu Sheng didn’t feel that there was anything wrong with such a life, and grew up quietly in the corner.
Until one day, her mother, whose dreams had been shattered, finally fell ill from depression. She laid on her sick bed and no longer looked at her with indifference, nor did she hide her resentment anymore. She pushed her away hysterically, screaming, “Why, why are you a girl?”
The little Lu Sheng, who was not even three, was confused and did not understand her mother’s scream at all. She had never even seen a man other than the butler. But children were always sensitive, and she easily noticed her mother’s anger and resentment, so she became even more cautious and didn’t appear in front of her mother easily.
Those days lasted for a long time, or maybe not. But the memory of being pushed away and cursed left a deep mark on little Lu Sheng’s heart… Fortunately it passed quickly.
Before she was three years old, her mother who had fallen ill finally died from depression. Before Lu Sheng had the time to grieve the loss of one person in the small courtyard, the butler Qi Bo, who finally appeared after a long time, appeared. He sent away the wet nurse, and had her pack up and sent her away.
When she sat on the carriage heading towards the princess’s mansion, Lu Sheng felt lost and uneasy, and the feeling of sadness in her heart was swept away.
She followed Qi Bo to a brand-new place. The buildings and decoration on the princess’s mansion were bigger and more beautiful than the Lu Mansion that she never even saw in full. She looked around so much it was like one pair of eyes was not enough. Her initial unease was gradually replaced by her curiosity, and she finally saw another blood relative of hers.
She looked at the person in front of her with clear eyes, and soon realized that that person looked similar to herself, or rather, she looked similar to that person. Lu Sheng had also looked into a mirror before, and clearly realized that their eyes and brows looked similar, even more similar than she and her mother. This surprised her a little, and made her feel immediately close and friendly with that person.
Lu Sheng didn’t understand what the adults talked about, but in short, she was left there.
Qi Bo said that that person was her uncle, her father’s brother, and he would take care of her on behalf of her mother. Lu Sheng obediently called him uncle, but she was still thinking about the wet nurse that just left her and was not aware of what situation she was going to face.
Then Qi Bo left, and Lu Sheng was left behind. Her uncle, who looked similar to her, looked at her with a complicated expression.
Maybe she didn’t feel any malice, or maybe it was the familiarity brought by their similar face – in this unfamiliar environment, she cautiously stepped forward and grabbed the edge of Lu Qipei’s robe. She pulled on it weakly, not daring to exert much force, and was prepared to be pushed away.
But that didn’t happen.
Her Uncle didn’t push her away and just stared at her for a long time, then he finally sighed and left with this little stepchild.
He didn’t pick her up, but walked very slowly to the point where the little dumpling could barely keep up with her two short legs. When she was tired of walking, she unconsciously borrowed force from the hand that was pulling his robe edge, and he didn’t say anything, half dragging and half leading her forward slowly.
The two of them didn’t go far, and Lu Sheng was soon taken to a small, exquisite courtyard where she was placed without a mother, wet nurse, or even an uncle butler. Only maids would come to take care of her every day.
At first, that person had an indifferent attitude, but when he saw her being obedient later, he occasionally stayed with her, but he always had a complicated look on him.
The little Lu Sheng didn’t understand the emotions in his eyes, but she felt that she was probably being hated again. She was always an annoyance and no one liked her, even though she never knew what she did wrong.
The turning point happened one evening. After the maid left, she sneaked towards the courtyard’s entrance. The excessive loneliness made it impossible for her to stay trapped inside the small courtyard, even though it was much bigger and beautiful that Lu Mansion’s courtyard. But without her mother, wet nurse, and her familiar little maid, she couldn’t stay there any longer.
It was on that day that she met the dazzling and vivacious Princess Qi Yang at the entrance of the courtyard, as well as her uncle, who was smiling gently at the princess. The two of them were chatting and laughing happily, but unfortunately, they were just passing by, and did not notice the small head hiding behind the courtyard’s door.
But the next day, she learned from the maid that the woman walking with her uncle was the owner of the mansion, and also her uncle’s wife. But she couldn’t call her “aunt”, and the maid told her to call her “Your Highness.”
The child obediently learned the address, and since then, she would wait at the entrance of the courtyard every evening.
From hiding behind the courtyard door to peek, to following her out of the courtyard, to following her back to the main courtyard… Although this journey was indeed a bit long and arduous for a child not even three years old, overall, this whole development only took less than a month.
The maids probably didn’t expect that a child not even three could run around like this, nor did they expect that she would have the courage to. And this momentary attraction and pursuit change her life completely.
