Chapter 24 Quit While You Are Ahead
Seeing Lu Heng turn to look at him, Old Xu had no choice but to accept his fate and say, “Alright, alright. Consider me unlucky then.”
He was extremely depressed. How could he have made such a big mistake back then? Was he blind to not have seen that this was a student from the University of Martial Arts with a bright future?
Since Old Xu was no longer speaking, Lu Heng started looking around.
There were quite a lot of things on display in this shop, but because he did not know which herbs were the most valuable, he could not decide which ones to take.
He suddenly felt a little regretful. If he had known that this would happen, he would have asked He Bing to teach him a little bit about herbs.
On the other side, Old Xu saw Lu Heng looking left and right without saying anything, and he immediately remembered.
This kid was a hothead who did not know anything about herbs.
If this kid had known that the flower poison ginseng was extremely toxic, he would not have bought it foolishly last time.
This kid was probably still a freshman who had not had the time or opportunity to learn about herbs in university.
Thinking this, he asked, “Little brother, do you want me to help you pick something
out?”
“You’re going to help me pick? Do you think I would still believe you?” Lu Heng glanced at him and said.
Old Xu smiled apologetically and said, “Little brother, you’re right. Last time, it was my fault for lying to you. I didn’t know that you were a student from the University of Martial Arts. How could I dare to do it now?”
“If I lie to you again this time, wouldn’t you seek me out again after asking your seniors and teachers about it? I would be in more trouble then, don’t you think?”
Hearing this explanation, Lu Heng had to admit that it did make sense. There was nothing wrong with the other party’s logic. Of course, he would not trust Old Xu so easily. After all, he had already been fooled by the other party once before.
Old Xu sold goods here every day and was a proficient salesman. Lu Heng, a high school dropout, would fall into his trap if he was not careful.
Thinking this, Lu Heng decided not to look at the display shelves any longer. He walked over to the room where Old Xu had stored the flower poison ginseng last time, wanting to pick some random things and leave afterward.
Presumably, there were either contraband items like flower poison ginseng or valuable items hidden inside. Whatever he took would definitely be worth at least two food stamps.
Old Xu saw this and quickly stopped him, “Little brother, no, no. I’ll definitely pick out what you’re looking for. Don’t…”
There were many good items hidden inside the room. If Lu Heng took some of them away, he would suffer a huge loss.
Lu Heng stopped and said, “So, the items outside are not as valuable as the ones inside, right?”
When Old Xu heard his question, he quickly said with a big smile, “How could that be? The good stuff is all out here. The stuff inside are all contraband items that can’t be put on display.”
“That’s great. I like contraband items.”
Lu Heng raised his foot again and walked inside.
At this time, he had already made up his mind. He decided to take this opportunity to obtain some poisonous herbs.
When he went back, he wanted to see if he could improve his talent again by eating them.
Seeing that Lu Heng was determined to go inside, Old Xu had no choice but to follow him closely.
The two of them entered the hidden room inside the shop.
The room was dim and dark. In fact, it was so dark that nothing could be seen clearly.
Lu Heng said to Old Xu, “Turn on the lights.” Old Xu immediately said, “This room was meant to hide things, so there are no lights.”
“Okay, then I’ll just take whatever I want.”
As Lu Heng said that, he reached out his hand.
Old Xu panicked and quickly stopped him, “No, no, I’ll help you. It’s okay to use a flashlight, right?”
After saying that, Old Xu took out a flashlight from the corner and turned it on.
Lu Heng immediately snatched the flashlight from him.
As the flashlight illuminated the room, Lu Heng realized that this room was arranged similarly to the outside area, with a row of shelves.
There were three shelves in total. Each shelf was filled with boxes, and each box was secured with a lock. “Which box is the flower poison ginseng in?” Lu Heng asked. “Flower poison ginseng?” Old Xu was stunned. He had not expected Lu Heng to ask about flower poison ginseng.
“What do you want the flower poison ginseng for?” Old Xu could not help but ask.
“I’m confiscating all of it to prevent you from harming others with it ever again,” Lu Heng made up an excuse.
This excuse was hard to refute, and Old Xu did not know how to respond to it.
He could not figure out whether Lu Heng’s sense of justice was off the charts, or whether it was done just to disgust him.
“Alright, alright. I’ll give them all to you.”
Old Xu sighed and took out the key from his pocket to open the lock.
Lu Heng followed Old Xu to the box that contained the flower poison ginseng.
After Old Xu opened the box, he shone the flashlight on it and examined it. He discovered that there were at least 30 flower poison ginseng plants inside.
“Help me put them in a bag,” Lu Heng said.
“Okay, okay, I’ll help you put them in a bag.”
Old Xu shook his head and went to look for a
bag.
Lu Heng continued to look at the other boxes with his flashlight.
There were no labels on these boxes, so he was unable to tell what was inside each one.
If he wanted to know, he could only ask Old Xu.
However, even if Old Xu told him the actual name of the herb, it was unlikely that he would know what it was or what effect it had.
After all, he had never studied such knowledge.
Lu Heng wondered if he should just take away these flower poison ginseng. Otherwise, if he overdid things, he would easily get himself into trouble.
However, just as he was about to make up his mind, he suddenly wondered if Old Xu had any information related to herbs.
Old Xu sold herbs here every day. If he did not understand the medicinal properties of the various herbs he sold, he would not be able to do business.
Knowledge related to herbs would be extremely complicated. It was probably impossible for Old Xu to have memorized all of that information. There had to be a book that could be flipped through at any time for reference.
A herb shop’s modus operandi was different from those who sold monster meat. Butchers only needed to know which meat could be eaten and which meat could not be eaten. They did not need to care about the monsters’ characteristics and traits. After all, they did not need to go out and kill monsters.
At this time, old Xu quickly walked over with a bag and started to pack the flower poison ginseng up.
“Little brother, are you satisfied now?”
“Not yet. Do you have any books related to herbs?”
“Ah?” Old Xu asked curiously, “You want those books too?”
“That’s right. If you have them, hurry up and take them out. I’ll take those and leave,” Lu Heng said. “Okay, okay, I’ll get them for you.”
Seeing that Lu Heng was willing to stop here, Old Xu immediately nodded and agreed.
Those books were not worth much, so he would just give them to Lu Heng.
He wanted nothing more than to be done with Lu Heng.
Old Xu handed the bag full of flower poison ginseng plants to Lu Heng and then led him to where the books were.
The two left the hidden room and returned to the shop outside.
At this time, there were two people in the shop choosing herbs. When they saw Lu Heng and Old Xu coming out together, they thought that they had been secretly trading contraband items, so they did not think too much about it.
Old Xu quickly walked behind the counter, pulled open a drawer, and searched for the books.
Lu Heng stared at him from the side.
When Old Xu picked up the thick and heavy book named “Common Plant Pharmacology Handbook,” Lu Heng noticed that there was a book named”Encyclopedia of Small Monsters” lying underneath it.
“Give me the one below too.”
Lu Heng pointed at the book.
Old Xu had no choice but to take out the thicker and heavier book below as well.
“You should be satisfied now, right?”
Old Xu handed the two big books to Lu Heng.
Lu Heng took the two books and did not say anything else. He turned around and left.
Looking at his retreating figure, Old Xu sighed and went over to deal with the two customers who were still in the shop.
After he had sent the two customers away, Second Brother Qin walked in.
