Chapter 20: The Retreat of the Beast Tide
Outside the tall, sturdy wall was a massive beast tide.
Beyond the east city, in the suburbs, several farming sheds stood guard like fortresses.
They had now been trampled to pieces.
Living in them were monsters that had been initially harmless to humans and animals.
Amid the chaos, they had been entrapped and mixed with the beasts involved in the beast tide.
Perhaps influenced by the wild monsters, the domestic animals were now running happily on the plain.
The beastly nature deeply hidden in their bloodline had been awakened.
Numerous Beast Tamers were standing on the city gate tower, which was as wide as a road, looking all geared up to fight a formidable enemy.
It was not just one or two monsters, but millions of them.
When he arrived home…
Bai Ye summoned Xiaowei.
“Xiaowei, can I take a look at what is happening by the east city wall?”
Bai Ye took a can of herbal tea out of the refrigerator.
He then sat on the sofa.
Xiaowei, who was sitting on the phone stand, moved its body comfortably.
An image was spinning on the mirror’s surface.
Very soon, a bird’s-eye view of the scene appeared in the mirror.
“There are so many monsters…” Bai Ye opened the can and took a sip of herbal tea.
“Stop. Yes, right there. Can you zoom in?”
The image was gradually enlarged.
He saw Fang Luolin standing on the city gate tower and looking down with a stern, serious expression. She was clad in a pitch-black battle outfit and a trench coat.
This gentle, feeble-looking young girl was a stark contrast to the group of burly men surrounding her.
A small white sheep had sneaked its way into a pack of wolves.
Bai Ye felt very worried, but he was also amused by the scene.
“She’s always pretending to be mature.”
An individual on the city gate tower who looked like a commander approached Fang Luolin. He pointed at her and then inside the city.
Fang Luolin frowned. She then said something to the commander.
At last, the commander shook his head and left.
It was a pity that Bai Ye could only watch the scene but could not hear a sound. If he had learned to read lips, he might have been able to guess what they’d been talking about.
In the wilderness, the numerous monsters were squeezing themselves against one another.
The violent-tempered ones simply had an outburst on the spot.
They were hustling and bustling like a ragtag group of soldiers.
However, it was precisely this kind of ragtag soldier that could evoke fear and terror in humans.
Bai Ye told Xiaowei to zoom in on the monsters. He wanted to find out which monsters were participating in the siege.
Most of them were low-level bronze monsters that could be commonly found in the wilderness near the base city.
However, the level of the monsters increased in the subsequent scenes.
Although he could not tell the specific strength of the monsters through the Super Dimension Mirror, he could guess some of their clans based on their size and looks.
“Wait a minute. Zoom in there,” Bai Ye said, pointing to a certain area.
“That’s actually a heterogeneic golden Moon Shadow Bear,” Bai Ye said. “Its endowment is definitely not poor. Heterogeneic beasts are typically one or two levels higher than other members of their clan.”
Due to their different skin color, heterogeneic beasts were generally seen as outcasts and were abandoned by the clan after they were born.
Therefore, the innate blood of heterogeneic beasts was often stronger than that of the same species, and so were their survival and combat abilities. This was the only way they could survive alone in the dangerous wilderness.
“Roar!” A roar was heard from the back of the beast tide before it caused in turn a commotion.
Led by an unknown monster, the remaining monsters charged gradually toward the city gate tower with the momentum of a torrential tide.
“The leader of the beast tide is located in that direction.” On a watchtower in the middle of the city gate tower, a group of people was all ears. They swiftly determined this upon hearing the roar.
“As long as we kill the leader of the beast tide, the tide will retreat,” a Beast Tamer said calmly.
“I’ll go.” A male Beast Tamer stepped forward.
“Wait, get one more person to go with you.”
“No, it will suffice if I go alone.”
The man pointed his finger at his glabella.
A summoning array emerged.
He then pointed one of his fingers outside the window.
The wind howled.
As a cry was heard, a huge blue bird with a body more than 30 meters long appeared outside the window of the watchtower. The man opened the window, jumped out, and landed on the blue bird’s back.
“Wait for good news.”
The huge blue bird transformed into a blue shadow and flew southeast.
Meanwhile, a battle had already broken out on the city gate tower.
Fang Luolin’s performance on the battlefield was extremely striking.
The Ice-Blue Salamander shot out blue freezing beams from the ice-blue skin on its body.
They were impossible to guard oneself against.
When the freezing beams hit a flying monster, it immediately froze and turned into a popsicle. It then fell down from a height of a few hundred meters and broke into pieces of ice.
Because of the city wall, the impact of land monsters on the city gate tower was not significant. However, the flying monsters in the sky were extremely annoying.
The tamed beasts did not need to worry, but the Beast Tamers had to pay attention to the sneak attacks of these flying monsters.
Fang Luolin told the Ice-Blue Salamander to focus on attacking the flying monsters in the sky.
The Beast Tamers in this area felt much more at ease as a result.
All they needed to do was deal with the land monsters beneath the city, as all the threats above them had been eliminated.
In the distance, one by one, dense flocks of Cadaver Sparrows occupied the sky and flew toward them with flapping wings.
These monsters fed on corpses.
Their digestive ability was extremely strong, and they would not leave any remains on the bones of the dead. They were thus called Cadaver Sparrows.
They tended to fly in flocks, and their signature attack move was spitting out the bones they had swallowed that had not been completely digested.
The partially-digested bones were covered with corrosive liquid. In combination with the impact of dropping them from a high altitude, this was certainly lethal.
Generally speaking, the Cadaver Sparrows were not high-level beasts. Their level was between the iron and the bronze level.
However, this kind of monster formed a massive population, and each of its clans included at least tens of thousands of birds.
A blue shadow suddenly barged into Bai Ye’s mirror. It was flying toward the furthest end of the beast tide. Bai Ye was taken aback. “What the hell is that?”
When he zoomed in, it turned out to be a Blue Sun Bird with a Beast Tamer riding on its back.
He followed the image of the Blue Sun Bird, which flew all the way to the deepest end of the beast tide.
Bai Ye then saw a valley.
This valley was situated deep in the mountains and was filled with beasts. There was actually a group of people in it.
This group of people was wearing masks.
A fat, white, worm-like monster was tied up in the middle of this place.
On top of the monster’s head was a crown-like thing formed by a lump of flesh.
The white, worm-like monster was firmly bound by a heavy chain.
The man jumped from the back of the blue bird.
He seemed to know these people. He smiled and stretched out his hand, wanting to shake hands with a masked man.
However, the masked man stepped back slightly and refused to shake his hand.
The man did not seem embarrassed.
The two parties negotiated for a while and finally agreed to some form of cooperation.
The group of people then loosened the chain.
The Blue Sun Bird spread its wings and spouted blue flame from its mouth.
The white, worm-like monster fought with the Blue Sun Bird.
However, the worm-like monster was eventually killed on the spot. Afterward, the Blue Sun Bird grabbed the carcass of the white worm and flew away.
Bai Ye touched his chin. He seemed to have discovered a huge secret.
That man appeared to be in a very good mood. He headed back, holding the white worm in his arms. As he overlooked the city wall from high in the sky, he had a feeling he was above everyone else.
Fang Luolin, who stood out as she participated in a fight in a certain area of the city wall, had attracted his attention.
He could not help but take a few more glances at her.
At the sight of Fang Luolin looking up at him from the city gate tower, the man responded with a faint smile.
However, Fang Luolin retracted her gaze after a mere glance.
‘I have to kill more monsters. This can be considered a battlefield call-up. I can earn points for every monster killed. I can earn more points and then go home and buy spare ribs for my younger brother.’
After the death of the white worm, the beast tide lost some of its momentum and the beasts were forced to retreat and disperse.
At that moment, this beast tide, which was not considered large-scale, also ended.
“Xiaowei, do you think I can slap him to death with the Super Dimension Space?” Bai Ye suddenly asked Xiaowei.
Xiaowei looked doubtful.
Its Super Dimension Space could make any entities that passed through it attain “ascension” temporarily.
However, there were limitations to it.
This was closely associated with its strength.
The higher its level, the greater its ascension and sublimation powers would be.
Nevertheless, it was worth mentioning that the magnitude of the ascension was constant.
Regardless of whether one was an ant or a human, the ascension had a fixed value to it.
