Chapter 27: The Man in the White Mask
Translator: Atlas Studios Editor: Atlas Studios
A man in a white mask stood at the forefront, while the other guards stood behind him, and the doctors stood further out. A very ordinary male voice came from beneath the mask. “What about the surveillance tapes?”
“This is a blind spot in the cameras, with an area of only about five square meters in size.” The werebeast subordinate checked the surveillance cameras the moment he had discovered the body in the morning. He lowered his head as he answered, “The surveillance cameras only showed Julie Smith approaching from that end of the courtyard at 8:15 pm, but no one else appeared to be with her. The first team who discovered the situation was a small patrolling team.”
The white-masked man did not reply, and the other guards also seemed to be deep in thought after hearing this. No one said anything.
What they had just heard meant there was a high chance that the culprit was an insider, but there was no evidence to prove who it was exactly.
In fact, the doctors could mostly only take part in the investigation but did not have the power to make decisions. On the other hand, all the guards only obeyed the mysterious masked man.
“Then search all the wards and screen any possible suspects. If there are none, the lockdown will be lifted this afternoon.” After giving the instructions, the mysterious man turned to look at the surveillance camera, narrowed his eyes, then left without saying another word.
The management level staff at the back also gave their orders and soon left with their subordinates.
King understood that although Julie Smith had the background of a tycoon, she was still not important enough for the hospital management to conduct an internal investigation.
This hospital did not have room for idle people. King did not know much about the roles of other doctors, but based on this instance, it seemed that the management valued their doctors, including King himself, more than that of a tycoon from another planet.
King was a little surprised by this.
The doctors seemed mostly unaffected when the white-masked man left. On the other hand, Reese—who had been watching the courtyard through the display screen in her room—was still observing all the guards. Just then, the mysterious masked man turned around and stared into the surveillance camera with a sharp gaze, almost as if he was looking directly at her through the monitoring machine.
This power move frightened Reese. She had clearly done nothing wrong, yet she felt as if she had been stripped bare and seen right through by everyone.
Sadly, King was unaware of this. He had been assigned a mission to pick out any suspicious people within the area he managed and to submit a list of them.
Because King was not too willing to accept patients, he was probably the doctor with the least number of people to investigate.
Soon, he had finished checking up all of his patients and he was now at his last room.
After three knocks, King helped himself into the room.
Reese was on the floor and slumped up against her bed. Her eyes looked lifeless.
This was the first time King had seen Reese like this. Even when they had met for the first time, she had only been sad and crying pitifully, instead of looking defeated like this.
He strode over and sat down on the floor with her, stretching his arm around to pull her into his embrace.
“You saw Julie’s body? Are you scared?”
As he patted gently on her back, Reese breathed his scent in, and her heart felt calmer all of a sudden.
She explained, “It’s the man with the mask. He looked into the camera. That look—”
King understood what Reese was feeling. When he first came to this hospital, he had also seen that person before, who was indeed capable to be of the highest rank in the hospital management. It was normal for Reese to feel frightened by her sudden “eye contact” with that person.
Reese nodded silently and after being dazed for a while, she got out his arms.
“Do you know who did it?”
King noticed that she wasn’t in a good state. “Don’t worry, it doesn’t concern you.”
He watched as she bit her lower lip. Afraid that she would hurt from biting herself, he leaned over and placed his lips over hers. He had intended for Reese to bite on his lips instead, but once their lips were close to each other’s, he could no longer remember his initial thoughts, and only wanted to press tightly against her fleshy lips and suck on them.
Their breathing quickened and their body temperatures rose.
In the end, before King’s mind got completely carried away, he released Reese.
He looked at her panting with a pink, flushed face. Even when she glared at him, she still looked so attractive, and completely different from how she looked moments ago. Only now did he feel more relieved.
He made a mental note that kissing could make darling Reese forget her worries!
Reese felt angry yet amused at the same time. She had clearly been talking about something serious when he had suddenly made his move. Even though she could not deny that she was now less panicky than earlier, she would never admit that it was because of a kiss.
What a lecher!
The atmosphere between the two of them had become much better now, and King was relieved.
Reese then asked again, “Who is he?”
“In any case, stay as far away from him as possible. I’m afraid that he’ll take notice of you. He’s a lunatic!” King merely urged her to stay away from the mysterious white-masked man. “I’ve tried to investigate him before, but he always found out. He’s too sly. You’re no match for him. Stay far away from him and you won’t be in danger.”
Reese understood that King was not as simple as he seemed, so even if she asked, he would not really tell her. She also knew for sure, that in order to leave this hospital in one piece, she definitely had to stay away from that masked man..
