Chapter 378: Chapter 371: Coming to See the Daughter-in-law
“He confessed to me, he’s gay, he’s changed too much…”
Zhang Yong’an’s face was currently livid, and he gritted his teeth. Yet he spotted Tang Yuxin sitting at another table, eating her meal while reviewing her notes. She had barely touched her food, but she was engrossed in her notebook. As Zhang Yong’an stubbornly stood to approach her, a girl went up to her instead. The two of them chatted, and Tang Yuxin pushed all of her food towards the girl. The girl picked up her chopsticks and began to eat. All of the ribs, fish, meatballs, and other meats ended up in the girl’s stomach.
Zhang Yong’an licked the corner of his lips and found it sweet. He then remembered that he had just been doused with pumpkin soup. Motherfucker, why waste such delicious soup by throwing it at someone? Was this a result of having too much money to burn?
He walked to the door and glared at Tang Yuxin with all his might.
That night, in his dreams, he dreamt of an odd scenario where Tang Yuxin became his girlfriend. He gave her all his money. He gave her all the meat in his meals. She even paid his tuition, sponsored his postgraduate studies, and his studies abroad. His life was absolute perfection and could not be better.
But when he awoke, he was still in his university dormitory. He lay on the top bunk, and his toothbrush on the desk had been used for two semesters and yet had not been replaced. His shoes on the ground were old, lacking the shine from his dream. His socks, after being washed multiple times, bore a hole that was clearly in need of discarding.
The other people in the dormitory had left for their classes, leaving him immersed alone in his dream.
Even when the bell for class rang, he sat stupefied, bathed in the sunlight streaming in from the window, falling on his distracted eyes, weakened from the constant use of glasses.
Nobody knew that outside the female dormitory stood a middle-aged couple. If Tang Yuxin were present, she would immediately recognize them as Zhang Yong’an’s parents.
“Is it here?” Zhang’s father was pointing inside while asking.
“I think so, yes, this is the place,” Zhang’s mother confirmed after double-checking the address. “We just asked, and they said it’s here.”
“What sort of girl do you think our son has found? With his looks, his academic abilities, and his character, he’s a student at Qing University. His future is unlimited. Whoever marries our son will surely live a fortunate life,” remarked Zhang’s father, increasingly pleased as he spoke.
“Absolutely! My son is excellent,” said Zhang’s mother, raising her chin. “No matter who it is, once she enters our home, she must follow our rules. She must give all the money to our son in the future. How could a woman control the money?”
“Exactly,” agreed Zhang’s father, sharing the same sentiment. “Throughout history, men have always been in charge and women stayed at home. Women are known to be reckless spenders while men are considered more responsible. How will we get by if all our money is wasted?”
“Didn’t our son mention that the girl has a house in Beijing?” asked Zhang’s mother, speaking in a low voice to Zhang’s father. “Didn’t he say that?”
“That’s right,” recalled Zhang’s father, “Our son did mention that. He said she has a property, but he didn’t say how big it was.”
“The property must be put under our names,” Zhang’s mother was insistent on this point. “It is not customary for a mother-in-law and father-in-law to live in their daughter-in-law’s house. It’s fair for the property to be in our names since she will be relying on our son in the future.”
Zhang’s father nodded in agreement. That was exactly how it should be.
“We only have one son, Yong’an, he has to carry on the family line. We absolutely cannot have a daughter,” he stated, resting his hands behind his back and pointing his toes.
“That’s simple,” replied Zhang’s mother dismissively. “Aren’t medical advancements incredible these days? Besides, she will be a doctor in the future. If it is a girl, it can be aborted. Regardless, we should have a grandson.”
Zhang’s father nodded continuously, agreeing with his wife. With the strict family planning policies, their family line, having a single male heir in each generation, must not be broken.
In any case, the intentions of the two were clear. The future daughter-in-law must satisfy them.
Tang Yuxin, with her books in hand, walked out as she planned to go to the cafetería. After eating, she would head back to the traditional Chinese quadrangle courtyard. Recently, her surgery schedules slightly decreased due to the exams she had to prepare for.
The weather seemed colder this year, and her hands were freezing. She placed her hand near her mouth and breathed some warm air onto it.
Immediately, her fingers felt warmer.
She abruptly recalled certain scenes from TV shows where a man warms a woman’s hands by breathing hot air onto them before gently tucking her hands into his pockets.
Such scenes were truly loving.
If she met a man like that in the future, she thought, she would certainly marry him.
She looked up only to see a middle-aged couple standing at the dormitory entrance. The relaxed expression on her face instantly transformed into a displeased grimace.
These were Zhang Yong’an’s parents – the ones who tortured her in their past life.
She had to go to work, earn money, raise their son, and also pamper the two of them. At home, they acted like emperors and empresses, not lifting a finger or doing any chores—not even washing their socks, underwear, or clothes. They would sit on the sofa all day, watch TV, and wait for their meals. Already busy with work, she couldn’t possibly return home after regular office hours to take care of the two of them. Yet, they would scold her daily, accusing her of being someone who was born to a father but raised without one.
In their past life, they caused her no end of torment. Now, why had they shown up? What did they want?
Were they here to seek her out again?
However, what relation did she have with the Zhang family? Could it be that they desired to cling onto her like a curse, tailing her for a lifetime, again causing her yet another lifetime of misery?
“Is that her?” Zhang’s mother pointed at Tang Yuxin, “She looks like the girl in the photo our son showed us.”
“She doesn’t look that much alike,” Zhang’s father commented skeptically, “Why is she so fair? Looks like she can’t do chores. Do they expect our son to serve her?”
“Absolutely not. My son won’t serve anyone,” Zhang’s mother decided, envisioning the situation where others tended to her son as more suitable.
