Chapter 384: Chapter 377: Cold Snow, Warm People
He took a small sip, and the flavor of the lightly sweet and spicy cola immediately warmed and relaxed his entire body.
Tang Yuxin poured another glass and passed it to the other soldiers.
As the men took their first sips, they felt as if they were drinking mom’s ginger soup. The warmth came not only from the drink but also from the humanity around them.
“Chief,” a man suddenly ran over. Gu Ning was just like the others at that moment, shoveling snow.
“What is it?” Gu Ning paused, “What happened?”
The man pointed behind him, “Some young girls brought us ginger-flavored cola. It’s really warm.”
“I’ll go take a look.” Gu Ning placed his shovel aside and headed towards the girls. Upon arrival, he saw a girl wearing a padded jacket sitting on a somewhat old tricycle. There was also a large thermos filled with hot water, and at that moment, she was busily filling cups. Heat rose with each pour. Some other girls were also helping, carrying the filled cups.
Upon getting closer, he found the girl’s face was strangely familiar.
Only when the girl raised her face and showed a faint smile, did he recognize her.
“Tang Yuxin?” He called out.
Yuxin glanced up and was taken aback to see him. Wasn’t this supposed to be security staff? Why was he here?
“Mr. Gu.”
Gu Ning approached her, “Why are you here? Late at night like this?”
“I brought you this,” Tang Yuxin handed Gu Ning another cup, “Ginger-flavored cola. I added some herbal medicine in it, which helps to stimulate blood circulation. Drink this and you won’t feel cold. It also prevents frostbite on your hands and feet.”
Gu Ning took it. He intended to scold her but seeing the girls’ red faces from the cold, he couldn’t find the words.
He raised the cup to his lips and drank several mouthfuls. A rush of warmth flowed from his throat throughout his body, reaching all his limbs, invigorating his entire being. Finally, it fused into his bloodstream. Indeed, as Tang Yuxin had described, the moment he drained the cup, he felt warmth radiate throughout his entire being.
“Come and drink some ginger cola,” he called out.
Upon hearing these words, the snow-shovelers put down their tools and hastily rushed over, orderly lining up and receiving, one by one, cups of warm ginger cola. They ensured that everyone got at least one cup.
The ginger cola was warm, delicious, and even more heartwarming were the intentions behind it.
At this moment, Tang Yuxin was watching the scene from not too far away. The night sky, the snow-covered ground. Everything fell into her eyes. She silently observed which billboard was about to fall. Unfortunately, she only knew a billboard was going to fall, but she didn’t know which one, so cautioning them was impossible.
Tang Yuxin got off the tricycle and asked Ting Yuan to help serve the cola to the others.
“Mr. Gu, look,” Tang Yuxin walked over to Gu Ning, pointing to the billboards above, “There’s quite a thick layer of snow up there. Be careful.”
Gu Ning frowned and looked up. He nodded, thanking her for the warning.
Cups of ginger cola continued to be filled. Their group of forty to fifty people had almost finished their first round. Everyone had only taken one cup, reserving the remaining ones for those who needed it most.
Gu Ning put down his empty cup. He stretched out his hand to readjust the hat covering Tang Yuxin’s head, “You should head home now. It’s cold outside. I’m sure everyone would want me to thank you all.”
“No, we should be the ones thanking you,” Tang Yuxin responded, holding down her hat. The endless expanse of snow lay before her, but behind her was a path that their group had cleared.
“There’s half a pot left, have another cup,” Tang Yuxin picked up another cup and filled it for Gu Ning, “Drink this, and then we can go home.”
Gu Ning took it and quickly drained the cup.
He then resumed his shoveling, directing the rest to do the same.
The pot of ginger cola was almost empty now, even Ting Yuan and her friends couldn’t get a single cup for themselves.
“Can we go home Yuxin?” Ting Yuan was trembling with cold so violently that her words were quivering. She was so cold she could hardly speak.
Hang in there a bit more, Tang Yuxin told herself. Standing by the tricycle, she kept a close eye on every billboard, each one looking as if it could collapse or stand firm at any moment.
Despite her observations, she couldn’t tell which billboard was truly in danger. Her nose started running due to the extreme cold.
She began to collect the disposable cups. As she was doing so, she noticed an unusual amount of snow falling from one area. It was as if snow was being dumped downwards in large chunks. This was no ordinary snowfall; it was as if snow was being hurled down.
She opened her eyes wide and saw a billboard starting to wobble in the distance.
“Watch out! Watch out….” She screamed while running towards the danger. Without thinking, she reached out, grabbed a man’s hand, and pulled him backwards. Immediately after, there was a loud crash; a massive billboard had collapsed. A few men who were still shoveling snow underneath were saved due to Gu Ning’s previous warning to keep some distance from the billboard. Hence, only a few people were in the area. If his warning was not given, probably more than a dozen people could have been struck.
Immediately after, several more billboards collapsed. However, everyone was prepared and managed to flee quickly.
Tang Yuxin scrambled to her feet from the pile of snow. The others were frozen in fear and didn’t dare to move.
Hurry, rescue them, she thought as she rushed over to assist some soldiers in helping those affected by the collapse. It was around three in the morning and the heavy snow had caused road closures, making it impossible for an ambulance to arrive.
Song Qingtong was the first to snap out of it, she ran over to join the rescue efforts. Ting Yuan and Lin Yile also followed suit, scrambling towards the scene. They fell to their knees and started digging through the snow. At that moment, they were oblivious to the cold. All they knew was they had to rescue people, they must save them.
“There’s one here,” Lin Yile, having dug up a trapped individual with her bare hands, realized her own hands were bleeding. She had no idea what to do and broke down crying.
“Yuxin, what do we do? He’s dead.”
