Chapter 386: Chapter 379: Window of Hope
On television, in broadcasts, and online, everywhere news was being aired. When a team was clearing the accumulated snow, a billboard suddenly fell down, injuring more than a dozen people who were now waiting to be rescued.
However, the roads were blocked, covered with snow. It wasn’t possible to drive on such terrain, so the citizens came out with their tools to clear a path – a lifesaving pathway.
At this time, while snow still covered the ground, an area had already been cleared out, yet everyone still huddled together, only hoping to offer some warmth to the people in the middle. The food, drinks, and usable clothes they had, they gave to the injured persons.
Lin Yile held a soldier’s hand tightly, constantly rubbing it, “Don’t be afraid, it will be alright.” Her eyes were teary and swollen from crying. Why hadn’t the ambulance arrived yet? Their injuries were so severe, and their body temperature was already low. If the ambulance didn’t arrive soon, they could die – really die.
Tang Yuxin squatted to the side, treating a victim’s arm injury.
“Save the medicine for them,” the victim said after glancing at his arm wound, nearly enough to see bone. He did not care about himself; the others were more important.
“They can’t use these medicines anymore,” Tang Yuxin continued bandaging his wound. The medicines were for external use, they couldn’t heal their injuries.
“Thank goodness we came,” Ting Yuan tore a piece from her clothing, soaked it in snow, and then placed it on a victim’s forehead. They were all running a fever, but their antipyretics were not sufficient and had run out, so they could only resort to this primitive method.
Unbeknownst to them, a journalist who had woken early had captured all these scenes.
“You said I brought too many medicines and they wouldn’t get injured, and I should save them for future use. See, my medicines are useful now,” Ting Yuan sniffed, cracking a joke amidst the crisis.
“Yuxin, is there a way to reduce his fever?” Ting Yuan, tears streaming down her face, asked anxiously. “He’s burning up.”
When they pulled out the thermometer, it was nearly 40 degrees. If the fever continued like this, it would lead to brain damage.
Tang Yuxin walked over, clearly exhausted and devoid of brightness in her eyes. She put down her needle bag, unrolled it, and took out several needles.
“This is symptomatic treatment. His fever is caused by intracranial hemorrhage and high intracranial pressure. I can only temporarily lower his body temperature; I can’t do anything else,” she stated before puncturing needles into the victim’s body. Even so, it wasn’t enough. As she stated, it was only symptomatic treatment. Until the root problem was solved, the fever would continue.
Ting Yuan, fearing the victim would continue to have hot fever, grabbed a handful of snow; her hands were numb until she could bear the cold no more. She then placed the snow on the victim’s forehead, hoping to help lower his temperature just a bit, even just a little would be an improvement.
Tang Yuxin withdrew her needle and sat down, strained and waiting for the ambulance, which was almost arriving. Her lips were frozen blue. At that moment, a man stood in front of her, and she instantly felt somewhat warmer. As she lifted her head, she saw Gu Ning standing in front of her, blocking all the wind and snow.
The soldiers and the girls remained in the center, not moving even an inch to protect the victims.
Eventually, afar, the sound of an ambulance could be heard.
Lin Yile suddenly lifted her face, “Am I dreaming? The ambulance is here. The ambulance is really here.” She was nearly in tears of joy.
“Did you hear that? The ambulance is here, we’re saved, we’re saved…”
She tightly squeezed an injured man’s fingers, and regardless of whether it was appropriate, she placed his hand on her chest to warm him up.
The man suddenly opened his eyes and smiled. Looking at the cold snowflakes, he felt no fear at all.
The current temperature in Beijing was minus 25 degrees. A cup of water left outside would freeze. Despite their severe injuries, the victims were still alive. Their comrades and the young girls had opened a window of hope for them.
They had prolonged their lives, ensured their survival.
The ambulance finally arrived. When the doctors and nurses got out of the vehicle, the sight before them brought tears to their eyes.
The young soldiers, some wearing thin clothes, others even shirtless, had laid their clothing on the ground and over the victims. The young girls, dressed lightly, huddled within, their coats covering the victims. They used their bodies to warm the victims, their hands shoveling snow to prevent the victims’ body temperatures from rising fatally.
Several medical staff hurriedly administered infusions and carefully lifted the victims into the ambulance. Gu Ning picked up a coat from the ground, shook off the snow and then draped it over Tang Yuxin’s shoulders.
“Thank you, truly,” Gu Ning stared into her eyes. In that moment, the gratitude in his gaze could have brought tears to any man. No words needed to be said, that simple thank you included everything.
Tang Yuxin smiled at him, shook her head, she was so frozen she couldn’t articulate any words.
Once at the hospital, the critically injured victims were immediately sent to the intensive care unit. The hospital had allocated a green channel for them, most of their injuries were already known to the hospital.
As soon as the patients arrived, they were prepared for surgery immediately.
All of them had varied degrees of frostbite, including the young girls.
Ting Yuan’s hands had frozen so badly they resembled radishes. Frostbite was visible on her face too. By the time Tang Yuxin returned, she had almost fainted from exhaustion. She had expended too much energy, over the limit her body could bear. Moreover, she had additionally withdrawn a sizeable amount of blood from herself.
Their frostbite injuries were indeed more severe than those of the soldiers.
Upon hearing the news, their school treated the matter with high importance. The school’s president, vice president, and other leaders personally came to console them. Their school was praised by all fronts, not just from the leadership, but also from society.
They were commended for teaching good students, and it was emphasized that besides academic achievements, moral character was truly important in contemporary students.
