After Su Xiaonai returned to her office, she called her best friend, Gu Xunjun.
“Hey, have you got any free time recently? I need a new assistant.”
Gu Xunjun readily agreed, but she was confused at the sudden request.
She blurted her question out.
Su Xiaonai told her everything about the assistant.
After hearing that, Gu Xunjun was indignant for Su Xiaonai.
“You need to go through the procedure and fire her immediately. You can’t keep such people around for long.”
“You’re right.”
Agreeing with Gu Xunjun, Su Xiaonai called for the HR department right after hanging up.
As the head of HR listened to Su Xiaonai’s recording, his face turned pale as he understood what she intended to do.
He bowed his head respectfully as he exited. He then released an announcement, stating that the assistant to the chairwoman was fired for reasons of spreading rumors.
Still in her chair, the assistant’s expression changed when she received the news. She stood up and shouted.
“Why??”
Her friend was shrewd enough to know that this wasn’t the moment to speak up for her friend, or she would get herself into trouble.
The assistant was burning with rage, but she remained calm on the surface. With her head held high, she packed her things and left the company.
As if it was the company’s loss that she left.
As soon as she walked out of the office, though, her face darkened as she started cursing loudly. Then she walked past an alleyway.
Two women were standing there—Su Jiaojiao and Wang Shenglan.
Frowning, the assistant asked, “What are you doing here?”
Wang Shenglan was also not a fan of the assistant’s tone. She talked like people owed her money. She simply did not know her place.
She snorted coldly and turned her head away.
But Su Jiaojiao didn’t think much of it and took the initiative to chat with the assistant.
After a while, she was able to convince the assistant with her nonsense. The assistant accepted a sum of money from her and decided to blackmail Su Xiaonai by threatening to jump off the building.
To tarnish Su Xiaonai’s name, they would have to make her the target of public criticism.
Without a second thought, she returned to her rented apartment and put her stuff down. Then she went back to the company building and walked to the balcony.
With her red high heels next to the fence, she sat on the railing. Although her hand still held on to the railing, she leaned out as if taunting death.
She didn’t know her actions had been monitored by Qi Lingyan, who had overheard their plan to frame Su Xiaonai earlier.
He had sent someone to investigate the bank accounts of Su Xiaonai’s assistant and stepsister, which led to the transfer records and their chat history on WeChat.
When he looked at the information gathered he had fallen silent. For a moment he didn’t know what to do.
Su Xiaonai paused when she got the call from the security. Rushing to the balcony, she saw the assistant threatening to jump off right away.
She had called the police already, and they were on their way.
Su Xiaonai felt that she should prioritize calming the assistant down so she wouldn’t do anything she regretted.
“Miss Assistant, please calm down.”
The assistant spotted the panic in Su Xiaonai and felt pleased, but she continued to fake crying.
“Ms. Chairwoman, how could you frame me and fire me so easily?”
Su Xiaonai replied calmly.
“Let’s talk about this when you come down.”
Not long after, a group of police officers surrounded the balcony and tried to talk the assistant down from the railing, not knowing the suicide attempt had been an empty threat.
Since it had been all but a performance, the assistant let herself be persuaded.
She took the initiative to walk down, and the police grabbed her arm and pulled her away from the railing, in case she changed her mind.
However, before the police could console her, their walkie-talkie beeped. As they listened to the voice, their expression turned ugly.
The policeman that was the closest to the assistant took out a pair of handcuffs. Without saying another word he attached them to the assistant’s hands.
The assistant was shocked.
Seeing her confusion, the policeman started to explain.
“We just received a report from a helpful citizen. You’re suspected of slandering Miss Su Xiaonai, so we need you come with us to the police station.”
Su Xiaonai was also dragged there to give her statement. In less than an hour, her assistant was convicted. It seemed like the evidence submitted by the “helpful citizen” had been very convincing.
Not knowing who it was, Su Xiaonai was immensely grateful towards this “helpful citizen”. She decided that if she ever found out who they were, she would definitely thank them in person.
After settling her matters, Su Xiaonai returned home. Then she saw a familiar figure in front of her doorstep.
It was Qi Lingyan’s grandmother, her hands holding a bag of presents.
Su Xiaonai was at a loss. How did Qi Lingyan’s grandmother find out where she lived?!
As if sensing her presence, the old lady suddenly turned around and saw her before she could hide.
The old lady hurried over.
“Xiaonai, you’re off work?”
Su Xiaonai smiled awkwardly and greeted her out of politeness.
“Why don’t you come in?”
The old lady didn’t bother with formalities and agreed right away. Su Xiaonai helped carry the bag for her.
The old lady gave Su Xiaonai an approving look, increasingly pleased with her future granddaughter-in-law.
Walking into the living room, the old lady saw Su Mubai hiding behind the sofa.
Wasn’t that the six-year-old kid who wanted to be his grandson’s girlfriend? There was a boy beside her who looked exactly like her. Twins, probably.
Squinting her eyes, the old lady noticed their blue eyes.
Just like the eyes of her grandson Qi Lingyan. She felt a certain emotion in her heart.
She trusted her instincts and suspected that these were the children of Qi Lingyan after all.
Seeing that the old lady was still standing there, Su Xiaonai went to the kitchen and poured her a glass of warm water.
The old lady thanked her, now convinced that the twins were the result of a love affair that Qi Lingyan was too embarrassed to bring up.
Su Xiaonai couldn’t figure out what was going through the old lady’s mind. She asked kindly.
“Ma’am, how did you find my apartment?”
The old lady smiled and replied seriously.
“I was lost.”
The corner of Su Xiaonai’s mouth twitched at the thought of the old lady stumbling upon her apartment after getting lost.
It was too much of a coincidence for anyone to believe.
Sensing that the old lady didn’t want to explain, Su Xiaonai decided not to force her. She suggested warmly.
“It’s almost time for dinner. Ma’am, why don’t you stay for some food? I can show off some of my best dishes.”
Before the old lady could reply, the two children behind her shouted in surprise when they heard their mother was cooking.
“Is Mommy really cooking tonight? Hurray! Mommy makes the best food!”
The old lady smiled in delight and agreed. The two well-mannered kids sat down and chatted with her.
Su Xiaonai walked to the side and quietly picked up her phone. Scrolling through her contacts, she finally found the number she was looking for and dialed it.
She had to ask Qi Lingyan to come and take the old lady home, although she really didn’t want to interact with that guy anymore..
