Chapter 32: Evidence, A Stack of Prescriptions
The tent was filled with immense tense and worry, but Gu Feiyan didn’t have time to explain.
The corner of her lip curled up into a beautiful smile. “Rest assured, everyone! I’ll be back soon!”
Refining medicinal herbs was a compulsory course in pharmacology. Gu Feiyan learned everything from her master, including the heaven-defying secret techniques, albeit she felt that it was rather too simple.
In less than an hour, Gu Feiyan had placed the scalded ephedra into the hands of Doctor Guo, leaving him extremely dumbfounded at her diligence. Refining ephedra is not such an easy task, yet she performed it so quickly and skillfully. At this moment, the soldiers on the side had increased their admiration and respect for Gu Feiyan.
Cheng Yifei looked at Gu Feiyan but did not say a word. The curve of his lips was always hooked, making it obvious how particularly pleased he was.
Once Xu Bin took the medicine, his asthma gradually became less threatening. He still had two more episodes, however, the time interval between them was long, indicating that it’s becoming less critical.
Gu Feiyan did not leave immediately but rather waited in silence to monitor Xu Bin’s health. It was not until the evening when Xu Bin was sleeping quietly and peacefully that the last taut string in Gu Feiyan’s mind finally relaxed. She then faced Doctor Guo and said seriously, “Alright, Doctor Guo. I’ll leave the rest to you!”
Seeing that she was about to leave, Doctor Guo quickly walked up to her, clasped his hands, and bowed. “If it wasn’t for you,” he said shamefully, “this old man would have completely disregarded his own life! This old man…This old man…” Doctor Guo was so ashamed that he fell down on his knees.
“Doctor Guo, don’t be dispirited. If it weren’t for you, Xu Bin wouldn’t have been able to be saved!” Gu Feiyan implored.
As soon as Gu Feiyan helped Doctor Guo up, five or six cooks in the tent suddenly cupped their fists and bowed to her. Gu Feiyan started feeling startled when she noticed how serious the cooks were being. She quickly asserted, “Please don’t bow. You all have also contributed to finding the ephedra. Xu Bin is fine now. Everyone’s tired from all the hard work and stress so please go rest.”
However, just as she finished speaking, a loud voice came from outside the tent. “Salute! Thank you, Gu Feiyan!”
Gu Feiyan turned around and saw that there were a total of five rows of soldiers that have followed into a formation. Over three hundred people cupped their fists and bowed to her in synchrony. Although the air was silent, the soldiers’ sincerity along with their tightly clenched fists resounded, serving its purpose to not only express their gratitude but to also express a kind of acknowledgment and respect. Gu Feiyan froze as she stared at the soldiers. Her emotions were in a whirl.
The army’s military salute is known to be a very grand and preeminent gesture, but to give it to a girl with such a complicated background is odd! She is a woman with a close connection to the Qi clan, being the future daughter-in-law of the enemy that their great general had kidnapped! The Qi family, who is at blame for the death of their most respected general, has caused a humiliating defeat for the Cheng clan. It wasn’t just Old Madam Lin and Cheng who hated the Qi family for this, but also every soldier of the Cheng clan. Yet, at this moment, they actually chose to acknowledge her in such a manner.
Cheng Yifei was also surprised, but he was also considerably happy! He was overjoyed that this woman, Gu Feiyan, had yet to marry Qi Yu. This means that she is technically not to be considered a member of the Qi Family just yet.
He walked out of the tent and shouted, “This general’s life was also saved by her! I had originally felt great humiliation to this, but, hehe, looks like I am honored today! Because of her, Brother Xu Bin and I did not die in a tent. Brothers, we owe this little girl two lives now. In the future, whoever dares to bully her will now have to go through the Cheng Family Army, whether they like it or not!”
None of the soldiers objected. They all replied in unison, “Yes sir!”
Gu Feiyan stared at Cheng Yifei. Though she did not approve of him just yet, she admits that her heart was filled with warmth due to his kind words. At last, after being reincarnated for so long, she finally started seeing this realm in a positive light. It seems that she can now also gain friends!
She hesitated for a moment but she then strode out of the tent. She imitated the movements of the soldiers and gave everyone a serious salute. “I am humbled by his words, but it’s not as serious as your general says. Saving people is the duty of the medicine girl. Everyone is tired from today’s stressful work. Please go back and rest! ”
Only after Cheng Yifei gave the order did the soldiers dare to rise and disperse. As for Doctor Guo, Cheng Yifei only gave him a three-month salary, which is not much of a heavy penalty. In order to atone for his sins, Dr. Guo took the initiative to stay behind and continue monitoring Xu Bin.
When everyone had left, Gu Feiyan could not help but yawn. Seeing this, Cheng Yifei asked affectionately, “Are you tired? Come, this general will help bring you to sleep!”
Gu Feiyan barely listened to the words he said, but she still felt suspicious intentions and glared at him.
Cheng Yifei laughed out loud and quickly called for his servant girl. “Put the medicine girl to rest and serve her well!”
Gu Feiyan didn’t know if Cheng Yifei would still force her about the fake prescription, nor did she know if he would allow her back to the city, however, for the time being, she didn’t have the leisure to think about it. She was simply too tired. Since the day of her rebirth, she could not think of a single night where she had slept in peace. She decided to have a good rest first before even thinking about continuing her fight with Cheng Yifei about the fake medicine formula.
Not long after she left, Old Madam Lin walked out from the side. She asked seriously, “Cheng Yifei. Do you really plan on keeping that girl here?”
“Does it seem like I’m joking?” Cheng Yifei asked.
She sighs. “There’s news from the palace. The father and son of the Qi family knelt in front of the imperial study room all day and night, saying that they want to sue you for abducting their future daughter-in-law. They are still kneeling to this minute!” Old Madam Lin chuckled, obviously in disdain.
Cheng Yifei was originally in a good mood, but after hearing this, it only elevated his mood. He laughed and said, “Let them be! I was beginning to worry that they wouldn’t react at all! ”
Cheng Yifei did not care about his reputation. He only kidnapped Gu Feiyan because he had already planned this a long time ago. The Qi clan had caused the death of his father, but the Emperor had merely punished them lightly. This time, he wants to see if the Emperor would punish him and how the punishment will be carried out! Cheng Yifei had made things so chaotic that he now wonders if Qi Yu could still be eligible to marry Princess Huaining! Everything was running smoothly according to his plans, but it was only Gu Feiyan that has caught him off guard. Now, putting all the commotion aside, he truly wanted to keep her.
Old Madam Lin thought for a moment but only cast a glance at her son, deciding that she will not reprimand him on this matter. She just said seriously, “Fine, I will not intercede. However, your illness has only just recovered. You can’t be so noisy anymore. You haven’t taken any medicine today, have you? Why aren’t you rushin-”
Old Madam Lin was about to say something, but Cheng Yifei had run off. Old Madam Lin should have been angry, but she could do nothing about it. She was itching to see her son and how well he has been holding up, however, after contemplating for a long time, she decided to give up and retreat.
Gu Feiyan was so tired that she had long forgotten that Cheng had sent someone to the Imperial Pharmacy. She was taken to a tent that was warmer than the one she had lived in before, and as soon as the maidservant left, she threw herself on the warm bed, thinking that she would fall asleep at once. But the moment she closed her eyes, the assassin’s ice-cold eyes uncontrollably surfaced in her mind…
