Chapter 29 One Step at a Time
Seeing this, Lu Ren propped himself up with one hand and did not stop. He rushed up and pulled Xiang Yang, who was still at the manhole opening, out of the sewer.
Looking from the opening of the manhole, the rapidly spreading tide of black rats had even gnawed the metal ladder into tatters. It made one’s hair stand on end.
A few rats the size of medium-sized dogs followed the ladder out of the sewer reluctantly. Before they could do anything, Lu Ren swung his sword, and their bodies were severed into pieces.
After skimming through the System notifications in his mind, Lu Ren retracted his sword and kicked the manhole cover back into place. Looking at the manhole cover, which was still shaking, Xiang Yang wanted to grab Lu Ren’s hand but missed.
She was slightly stunned. Lu Ren raised his chin slightly. “Lead the way.” Xiang Yang bristled.
“Come with me!”
The more Lu Ren walked, the more he felt that something was wrong. In the end, he suddenly stopped in his tracks and said with a nasty expression, “Where are you bringing me?”
“Find a safe place, of course!”
“Shit!”
Lu Ren looked very displeased, and an urge to slaughter Xiang Yang surged in his heart. He looked at the large building in front of him, which had a huge hole in it.
“I had been here before. A large number of contaminated creatures had congregated around this building!” This young girl was causing a lot of harm. No wonder she had skipped several exits in the sewers.
Xiang Yang felt a little in the wrong. She said with an embarrassed expression, “I’m sorry, this is the research center building that generated the mystic realm. I’m sorry for not getting your permission, but I really have no choice. I can’t complete this mission alone… I know I’m selfish, but…”
When she discovered that she was not strong enough, she had no choice but to seek external means. After finding out that Lu Ren was better at combat than her, she had placed her attention on him.
Indeed, if one’s mind was not active, one would not have been able to survive in this city for more than three years.
“No buts. I refuse.”
Lu Ren looked at the sky. It was still early. He planned to leave this place immediately and find a safe place to hide. No matter what, he had to get through tonight first.
Looking at Xiang Yang’s disappointed expression, Lu Ren said, “Young lady, do what is within your means. If there are other human survivors in the world, there must be someone stronger than you. Then why have they not been able to close the mystic realm passageway?”
Seeing that Xiang Yang was stubborn and did not speak, Lu Ren shook his head slightly. “If I were you, I would try my best to return to the human survival base. Perhaps in that survival base in the North Pole, those survivors have already planned to give up on this planet and are preparing to go to outer space. Therefore, you have to think carefully next time.”
With that said, Lu Ren did not stay any longer. The longsword in his hand moved slightly, and just as he was about to slash at Xiang Yang, he suddenly stopped in his tracks and looked ahead with a bad expression.
It was the Giant Mutated Bull. It was looking faintly at Lu Ren and Xiang Yang.
“Damn, how did it appear? There was no movement at all!”
It was like a ghost. System: “Ding… The Giant Mutated Bull has discovered you. It happily wants to run over and give you a warm hug!”
Is this a warm hug that would scatter flesh and blood?!
He hoped that Xiang Yang had not discovered his small movements. This place needed an experienced driver like Xiang Yang to lead the way. He definitely could not run around like a headless fly. If he ran into some dangerous areas, he would not even have a place to cry.
“Let’s go! Lead the way!”
Hearing Lu Ren’s blunt command, Xiang Yang curled her lips and did not hesitate. She immediately turned around and ran toward the building in front.
Seeing this, Lu Ren could not help but feel a little helpless. There was something wrong with this building, but there was no sturdy shelter around it. The nearest building was also 80 meters away. This gap was enough for the monster to kill him on the spot.
He had no doubt about the terrifying power of this ridiculously large bull.
Xiang Yang looked up and was stunned for a moment. She watched as Lu Ren accelerated past her and charged toward the building. Then, without hesitation, she turned around and chased after Lu Ren.
“Wait, wait for me, you heartless person!”
The two of them charged into the building one after another. When the giant bull behind them saw this, it let out a low cry, and the sound waves it emitted raised a ring of dust. With the heavy footsteps that were slow initially and later became an intense chase, it seemed as if the whole earth was trembling.
Lu Ren held his swords with both his hands and quickly charged into the hall.
When Xiang Yang, who was following closely behind, saw this, she quickly said, “Follow me!”
As she spoke, Xiang Yang did not stop in her tracks. She rushed past Lu Ren and headed toward a pillar in the hall. After slapping randomly on the pillar for a while, an LCD panel quietly appeared on the wall of the pillar, prompting her to enter the password. Xiang Yang looked excited, as if she was pleasantly surprised that she had discovered it in one attempt.
“Password, password… password!”
Xiang Yang muttered to herself, her words came in a hurry as she tried hard to recall. Her fingers kept moving on the password keyboard.
Lu Ren could not help but say, “If you can’t remember, go upstairs first. That bull is coming in soon.”
He automatically raised his head to take a look at a black contaminated creature that looked like a tentacle monster standing at the entrance of the spiral staircase on the second floor.
With the sharpness of his weapon, he should be able to charge through.
No matter what, it was better than staying here and waiting for death.
The front door of the building had long become a hole. It was obvious that it had been caused by a huge collision, and that the giant bull was already about to charge into the hall. If it were to enter the hall, given the speed at which the other party was charging, Lu Ren felt that he would not have any chance to dodge.
The other party was too fast, and the area of impact would be very wide. Coupled with the sound waves emitted by the other party’s cry, it was simply a huge killing weapon.
Lu Ren took a deep breath and looked at Xiang Yang, who was almost possessed. Just as he was about to leave, Xiang Yang said in surprise, “It’s open, it’s open. The password my father gave me is correct!”
Sizzle!
The sudden sound of an electric current could be heard. The wall of the pillar slid to the side, revealing an elevator-like entrance.
The giant bull was already outside the hall, its bloodshot eyes staring fixedly at Lu Ren. The entire ground was trembling faintly as it ran. The oppression and panic it gave off were definitely beyond imagination, especially when he saw the figure of the giant bull which kept getting larger in his eyes, and that terrifying charging speed.
“Come in quickly!”
Lu Ren did not have the time to think. There were too many contaminated creatures here. Previously, if he had not escaped from this place immediately, he would have been besieged by the contaminated creatures.
If he had been a step slower, the giant bull would have definitely collided hard onto him. Now, he could only pray that the elevator was made of high-strength composite metal and could withstand the impact, or that they would immediately descend the moment they entered the elevator.
After entering the passageway with Xiang Yang, the elevator door quickly closed, and then it suddenly descended rapidly. Before he could even sense the sudden weightlessness, a loud bang suddenly erupted from above.
Lu Ren looked up unconsciously. Apart from the ceiling of the elevator, there was no movement.
From the looks of it, it was a magnetic-rail type elevator. Otherwise, if the ceiling above was shattered, the elevator would definitely be affected.
“You look like you’re covered in sweat,” Xiang Yang suddenly teased.
Lu Ren resisted the urge to slash at her. He wanted to erupt, but he knew that he still needed Xiang Yang. Without her in the research center below, there might be some huge problems.
He looked at Xiang Yang meaningfully and said calmly, “If you have the chance in the future not to have your back facing such a huge creature charging directly at you, I think you would wet your pants.”
This woman was not simple. She seemed to have a strong belief. She firmly believed in the will of the determined.
