Rebirth of a Farming Wife - Chapter 556
Chapter 556: Chapter 562: Breaking and Rebuilding
“Daughter-in-law, don’t worry. The loss of Yiyang City doesn’t mean much; it was within my expectations. When I left Yiyang Prefecture, I was already prepared for this,” Han Yu comforted, his hand gently patting Su Wenyue’s head.
“You did this for me, to find me, right?” A layer of moisture formed in Su Wenyue’s eyes because she was so caught up in the moment she failed to realize the true meaning behind Han Yu’s words.
“Don’t get angry if I say this, but sometimes you think too little of yourself, and at other times too much. When I first heard of your news, I was heartbroken and nearly out of control, but not entirely irrational. Why leave Yiyang City? You could say you were partly the reason behind it, the catalyst for the event,” he explained.
If it were any other man, seeing their wife so moved, they would say sweet words to make her even more devoted; Han Yu, however, wasn’t that kind of person. Firstly, this is the truth, and he didn’t wish to lie to his daughter-in-law. He also couldn’t bear to see her blame herself, to take all the guilt upon herself. Everything was a part of his plan, unfolding as he had anticipated, except that he minimized the impact she had on him.
People are such that knowing Han Yu had lost everything for her, Su Wenyue felt worried and guilty. But hearing his words suggesting otherwise, suspecting that his love for her wasn’t as deep as she thought, everything being a result of opportunistic planning, left her feeling dejected, even somewhat resentful and disappointed. She had been willing to die for Han Yu, and yet he was still able to calmly orchestrate everything according to plan, so rationally that she believed Han Yu didn’t love her at all.
No! She mustn’t continue down this path of thought, Su Wenyue shook her head. She can’t keep spiraling down these rabbit holes. The care Han Yu had for her was something she felt genuinely; it was real, not something that could be erased by a few words. Besides, those were Han Yu’s words, and he’s not that foolish!
Suddenly, Su Wenyue understood Han Yu’s intent. Her heart couldn’t describe the feeling; he was trying to prevent her from worrying, hence his deliberate words. Perhaps there was some truth to them, Han Yu indeed had plans when he left Yiyang Prefecture, but those were because of her that he had made the worst-case preparations, leading to a sequence of arrangements. Han Yu was just that sort of person, always the quickest to calm down and manage everything. This was his nature, not a lack of concern for her.
However, knowing that Han Yu had made preparations gave her much relief. Even if they truly needed to lie low for the time being, there would be a chance to turn the tables later on. In her previous life, neither Liu Xiu nor Han Yu had smooth sailing from start to finish. They experienced countless difficulties, setbacks, and failures before ultimately succeeding.
“What exactly happened? Tell me everything, Husband, so I know what to expect, and won’t panic when things arise,” Su Wenyue said earnestly.
Seeing his wife’s demeanor, Han Yu knew she had come to understand, and he sighed internally. His wife, call her clever, and sometimes she’s stubbornly foolish; call her foolish, yet sometimes her smarts could be truly cunning, impossible for him to deceive.
“Tell me everything that happened, without adding or omitting anything. I can bear it more than you think. I need to know the true course of events so that I’m informed and won’t drag you down,” she insisted.
Su Wenyue saw hesitation on Han Yu’s face and continued, “I’m not foolish. Given the current situation, even with your plans in place, I fear the outlook isn’t very optimistic. You said you would always have me by your side from now on. If that’s the case, then I can’t be just a housewife who knows nothing beyond managing a household and raising children in comfort. Instead, I must fight alongside you. Even if I cannot join you on the battlefield, I can still support you from the rear, strengthening your endeavor.”
Su Wenyue spoke with an unwavering resolve, her determination unlike any he’d seen before. Han Yu felt deeply moved. Even though it pained him, he acknowledged she was right. After this ordeal, he truly didn’t intend to let his wife leave his side again, which meant she would have to endure hardship and face adversity with him. With Yiyang City lost, life would not be as peaceful as before; it would inevitably be fraught with difficulties and dangers. She would need to grow strong enough to overcome them.
“What you said is right, my wife. From now on, we’ll never be apart. We won’t fear difficulties or dangers; we’ll share both the bitter and the sweet, carrying the burden together. All right! I’ll tell you everything.”
Han Yu always kept his word. Having promised to tell Su Wenyue the whole truth, he thoroughly laid out everything without holding back, including his visions and plans for the future.
“Did Liu Xiu truly never send any messages your way from start to finish?” Su Wenyue had always had a good impression of Liu Xiu, primarily because, in her previous life, he was a wise monarch who held Han Yu in high esteem. Therefore, she found his actions somewhat hard to accept.
“No, for whatever reason, I haven’t received any messages from there. The information I learned was all through the spies we planted in the military camp.”
“Husband, you’ve been so dedicated and loyal to Liu Xiu, and yet he’s treated you like this, it’s truly disheartening! I originally thought Liu Xiu was magnanimous and capable, which is why I hoped you would align yourself with him. Now it seems that may have been just a facade. If Liu Xiu can’t be trusted, do you still intend to serve him and his cause?” Su Wenyue was in a dilemma over this issue. Facing the current situation, if Han Yu didn’t serve Liu Xiu, where else could he turn to? Surely they couldn’t carve out their own kingdom, especially since others might not be more reliable than Liu Xiu and worth their allegiance.
“Naturally, we must continue. Otherwise, why would I bother with all these arrangements? Others might not be stronger than Liu Xiu; it’s likely they don’t measure up to him. As for sitting in that position, I’ve never contemplated that. Being in that position requires not only luck and skill but also a spirit of patience and sacrifice, none of which I possess. Having been by Liu Xiu’s side for so long, I understand him quite well. His heart is rather broad, and although he was unsympathetic this time, he was probably swayed by others’ influences. There are too many nasty persons around him. After this ordeal, he will surely learn and grow, and my decision to let things be serves that very purpose. Rather than leaving those rascals to jump around, it’s better to eradicate them in one fell swoop, to break and then establish anew.”
