Chapter 71: Chapter 71: The Person Seen is No Longer Wen Li
Ji Yuqiao’s gift, the watch, was too expensive, and Wen Li, seeing it, felt she could never present the cheap gift she had brought.
After having dinner with Xiao Yu, she hurriedly left.
Wen Li originally wanted to throw away the gift box, but seeing the look of anticipation in Ji Zeqiu’s eyes, she felt guilty for a moment, and before she knew it, she had handed him the gift box.
Ji Zeqiu couldn’t wait to open it and inside lay a pair of silver cufflinks.
After Xiao Yu started working in the studio, he often wore suits, so Wen Li thought of buying him a pair of cufflinks.
Although they were inexpensive, they were delicately and attractively designed.
“They’re beautiful, I really like them,” Ji Zeqiu’s eyes sparkled as he drew Wen Li into his arms. “Thank you for your gift.”
Wen Li’s eyes flickered, “I… I don’t have much money, I can’t afford expensive gifts…”
“As long as it’s from you, no matter what it is, I like it,” Ji Zeqiu’s lips couldn’t help but curl up into a smile.
Hearing his words, Wen Li’s expression briefly became dazed.
It seemed that it was indeed true…
She and Ji Zeqiu had known each other for many years, and on his birthdays, she occasionally gave him handmade gifts, but no matter what they were, he was always very happy when he received them.
“As long as you like it,” Wen Li lifted her red lips, finally showing her first smile of the day, forgetting everything else, “and thank you for taking care of me during this time.”
After Wen Li returned to her room, Ji Zeqiu still held those cufflinks, thrilled as if he had received a treasure, carefully examining them.
Suddenly, he seemed to notice something, and the smile on his face abruptly froze.
The small cufflinks had two letters engraved on the back.
X, Y.
Xiao Yu.
Ji Zeqiu silently mouthed the name, and the happy expression on his face slowly sank, his mood instantly plummeted, and the wave of discomfort engulfed him like a tide.
The more excited he had been a second ago, the more miserable he felt now.
“Zeqiu, my toothbrush accidentally fell into the toilet, do you have a new one?” Wen Li came out of the bathroom with a frustrated expression.
“I have one.”
Ji Zeqiu masked the sad expression on his face, not letting her see the clue, his face returned to normal, and he turned to get her a new toothbrush.
—
Perhaps due to the calls from his fans, Ji Zeqiu’s workload had decreased over the past few days, and he gradually had more holidays.
Normally, Ji Zeqiu would have rushed home eagerly.
However, two days into his holiday, he still stayed at Shen Qingtang’s place, unwilling to go back.
He was afraid that seeing Wen Li would remind him of the gift that had been passed on to him.
Shen Qingtang was conveniently staying in the crew’s accommodations during this time, allowing him some solitude.
The sun rose, its orange rays lighting up every spot, yet in a certain small apartment, thick curtains were drawn, blocking out the daylight.
The room was as dark as midnight.
Ji Zeqiu lay in bed, unable to differentiate between day and night, awakened not by an alarm, but by waves of severe cramps in his stomach.
He groaned, waking from the dream, clutching tightly to the painful area of his abdomen.
His stomach muscles spasmed continuously, as if someone was stirring a dagger inside, the pain making him break out in a cold sweat, causing the entire bed to become wet and slippery.
Ji Zeqiu’s vision was dim and blurry, he gritted his teeth, barely holding on to the last bit of consciousness, and made a call to his agent.
His voice was hoarse and unpleasant, “Brother Zhao, I’m at Shen Qingtang’s place, take me…”
He didn’t manage to finish his sentence before his consciousness was engulfed in darkness.
Once again, Ji Zeqiu found himself in the hospital.
He had not felt the sunlight for a long time, and now the dazzling light streamed through the hospital window, illuminating the room so brightly that it made his eyes ache.
His stomach no longer ached, and even the color had returned to his face, making him look less frightening.
The hand lying on the bed was held by someone, warmth spreading from the palm to his entire body…
Ji Zeqiu sighed internally, it seemed Brother Zhao was extremely worried and had been staying in the ward all this time.
“Brother Zhao, I…” He turned his head, and upon seeing that gentle profile like a lotus, he was momentarily stunned.
The sunlight touched her cheeks, outlining her delicate features.
“Hmm?” Lin Xu’s clear voice grunted softly as she slowly opened her eyes, meeting Ji Zeqiu’s surprised gaze and was foolishly stunned.
“What’s the matter?” Ji Zeqiu asked, puzzled.
As he spoke, Lin Xu’s eyes reddened instantly, tears swirling but not falling, which was heart-wrenching to see.
Ji Zeqiu chuckled lightly, “Crying so hard, I haven’t caught some terminal illness, have I?”
“Tsk, tsk, tsk! What nonsense!” Lin Xu’s eye tears were chocked back by his remark, “The doctor only said you have gastroenteritis, probably caused by your erratic diet these past few days and eating irresponsibly.”
When she had arrived at Shen Qingtang’s house, the table was piled with many takeaway boxes, and he lay on the bed, his body cold, his complexion pallid as if he were dead.
It scared her so much her heart nearly stopped.
Thinking back, Lin Xu still felt a shiver of fear.
Ji Zeqiu tugged at his lips, about to speak, then saw Lin Xu suddenly throw herself at him, embracing him tightly.
“Don’t ever do this to yourself again, do you know how scared I was…” her voice choked up.
He looked somewhat awkward, “I’m fine, what’s there for you to fear?”
“I fear you might die…”
Suddenly, Ji Zeqiu felt his shoulder becoming damp, and as he realized what was happening, his body stiffened abruptly.
A bittersweet emotion surged in his chest, yet it also felt warm.
When he was a child and fell ill, it was his mother who cared for him. Later, his mother’s image in his heart became blurred, impossible to delineate.
After he met Wen Li, that blurred image automatically morphed into Wen Li.
Seeing Wen Li always made him feel like his mother had never left him.
But now, that blurred image had changed into Lin Xu.
Several times upon waking, it was only her he saw.
It was just a minor illness, yet she always got extremely worried, and this time even cried.
Experiencing such direct concern for the first time, Ji Zeqiu did not know how to respond, stammering, “I, I’m fine, don’t cry.”
“Don’t run out on your own anymore, making me worry,” a sad and muffled voice said from his shoulder.
“Okay,” Ji Zeqiu agreed awkwardly.
It took a while before Lin Xu stopped crying and came out of his embrace.
She wiped her tears and said fiercely, “Don’t tell anyone I cried!”
Ji Zeqiu awkwardly looked away, “I couldn’t care less to mention it.”
“Alright, I’ll go call the doctor to come and check on you,” Lin Xu remembered this only now.
She turned to leave, but her wrist was suddenly grasped.
Ji Zeqiu’s cheeks flushed with an unnoticeable blush, “Could you maybe not leave just yet…”
