Chapter 26: The Pack of Wolves

The Treasure Beast was very powerful, and even though Ye Feng and the others had the upper-hand, they didn’t drive the beast to desperation. They fought it relatively slowly, waiting for it to tire before they could burst forward and slay it with a single strike.
The Treasure Beast roared, suddenly erupting with fury as its strength jumped in magnitude, but unfortunately, it had already used up too much of its energy and went berserk too late. At this point, even though it fought with its life on the line, it only managed to injure Ye Ba slightly.
Finally, Ye Feng’s saber came down, beheading the beast.
“Hail the Captain!”
The hunters began shouting with excitement. They had taken down a Treasure Beast, a beast they probably wouldn’t see again for many decades! This outing had already paid off.
“Brothers, we need to harvest the corpse. Let’s take a break here and have some food. We’ll move out in two hours!” Ye Feng called out cheerfully, his composure broken by a full smile.
A Treasure Beast had that high a value; it was something that money alone couldn’t buy.
The hunters followed his orders and began setting up an impromptu camp, sending out scouts before they took out some dried rations.
Ye Feng had consumed too much of his True Qi, and after the order, he and the three Level Eight Martial Artists immediately sat down to meditate and recover.
Everyone else was in charge of defense.
“Uncle Ba, are you alright?” Ye Tian asked, passing a piece of dried meat to Ye Ba. The injured man was sitting, Ye Meng at his side dressing his wound.
Ye Ba laughed, taking the dried meat as he replied, “It’s nothing, just a small wound. There are no men without injuries like this. Uncle Ba is used to it. How about you? How are you adapting to the hunter life?”
“Fitting in. I didn’t get the chance to fight, so my hands are restless. I’m impatient!” Ye Tian joked.
“Haha…”
Ye Ba burst into laughter.
Ye Meng finished dressing the wound and sat back, ruffling Ye Tian’s head as he smiled. “Impatient? Could you face a Treasure Beast? Even your old man didn’t get to fight, yet you’re getting restless!”
Ye Tian smiled embarrassedly.
“That’s nothing. Weren’t we all the same when we first became hunters? We were all restless. If we find a beast at Ye Tian’s level, we can let him practice. With us here, nothing bad will happen,” Ye Ba said, gesturing.
“Thank you Uncle Ba!” Ye Tian chuckled.
Two hours later, Ye Feng opened his eyes and called out: “Let’s go!”
The hunters quickly packed their stuff, their expressions serious as they returned to their expedition.
As they went deeper into the forest, they encountered more and more beasts and collected an impressive haul.
Ye Tian fought a couple times, but his opponents were always Level Two or Level Three Martial Artist beasts with Ye Feng and the others heading off any higher-leveled opponents.
“Ye Tian, a Level Three Martial Artist Mad Ox! Come over here!”
See!
Just as Ye Tian was feeling depressed, another hunter called him up to the front.
Level Three Martial Artist?
Asking him, a Level Six Martial Artist, to fight a Level Three Martial Artist Beast? They were having him play the bully! An animal abuser!
Ye Tian walked forward listlessly, standing in front of the charging yellow Mad Ox, its horns gleaming bright. As he faced off against it, the other hunters couldn’t resist yelling out warnings: “Ye Tian, careful with the horns!”
Careful my ass!
Ye Tian complained silently, no longer willing to hide his true strength. He struck out with his saber, splitting the Mad Ox with a scarlet metal flash.
Instantly!
Silence fell over the entire hunter squad, all the hunters dazed with amazement.
The Mad Ox was a Level Three Martial Artist beast but its strength was equal to an Early Stage Level Four Martial Artist—none of the hunters had expected Ye Tian to kill it in one blow.
This…
The hunters turned shocked eyes towards Ye Tian.
Ye Tian shrugged, helplessly explaining, “Leave me a Level Five Martial Artist beast next time. A Level Three beast is too weak for me!”
Ye Ba, Ye Meng and the others were speechless.
Ye Feng recovered first, asking straightforwardly, “Kid, how strong are you?”
“I’m really a Level Four Martial Artist, but my Thundering Palm has reached perfection so I think my strength is equal to a Level Five Martial Artist,” Ye Tian replied.
“Fine, then I’ll leave you a Level Five Martial Artist beast next time!” Ye Feng agreed, still somewhat frozen with shock.
After a round of admiring sighs and laughter, the Ye Family hunters marched forward.
Soon, they encountered a Level Five Martial Artist beast, the Howling Moon Wolf.
Ye Feng tested the beast’s strength and made sure that the Howling Moon Wolf could barely be considered a Level Five Martial Artist before he called Ye Tian over. “Here, this wolf is yours!”
Ye Tian ran over happily.
“Go son! Don’t let your guard down!” Ye Meng laughed loudly.
“Go on, kid! Give us a good show!” The other hunters called out, but their loud laughter only brought back Ye Tian’s gloominess.
Level Five Martial Artist?
If he wasn’t hiding his true power, he would only need a single strike!
Helpless, Ye Tian suppressed his power and struck forward with his blade.
Clang!
Ye Tian’s scarlet saber was blocked by the Howling Moon Wolf’s sharp paw, its bloody mouth flashing forward as it pounced towards him.
“Not bad! But unfortunately your opponent is me!” Ye Tian complimented the beast, turning his saber and cutting straight into the Howling Moon Wolf’s throat.
“Good!”
“Great saber skills!”
…
The eyes of the hunters gleamed as they called out praise.
Even Ye Meng and Ye Ba were sighing with admiration.
“Has Ye Tian learned any saber skills before?” Ye Feng asked, turning to Ye Meng. His eyes were very good, and even though he didn’t recognize Ye Tian’s saber style, he could see that every move was deadly and powerful.
“I don’t know. I’ve never seen him use a sabre!” Ye Meng shook his head, somewhat confused. He had never even seen Ye Tian holding the weapon.
“The Martial Instruction Elder might’ve taught him. I’ve seen him heading over to the Martial Instruction Pavilion many times.” Ye Ba speculated.
Ye Feng and Ye Meng nodded, accepting the explanation and not thinking too much about it.
They could never have imagined that this saber style was one Ye Tian had learned in his previous life as a soldier in the special forces.
The only purpose martial arts had for any soldier, but especially for a super soldier in the special forces, was to kill.
So, the military blade arts had no pretty moves or fine flourishes; every move was aimed at a vital body part and every strike was aimed to kill.
Ye Tian was an excellent special forces soldier in his past life and was intimately familiar with blade craft, and for the first time, he could show off his knowledge of the military style to this new world.
The Howling Moon Wolf was very powerful, but the more powerful its lunges, the deeper Ye Tian’s blade would cut, and the more impressive Ye Tian’s technique seemed.
Soon, the Howling Moon Wolf was tired and careless, and when its concentration slipped, Ye Tian’s blade cut down and finished it.
A new silence fell upon the forest!
Finally, applause filled the air as the hunters called out in excitement.
“Good!”
“Amazing!”
“Beautiful fight!”
The hunters all applauded with great surprise and admiration, and for a moment, Ye Tian felt like he was a celebrity at a concert.
“Not bad! I didn’t know you studied such powerful saber techniques. Your Yellow Martial Spirit is really being put to good use! Not only is your cultivation growing rapidly, but you’re also talented with Martial Skills!” Ye Feng called out as he walked over.
“Uncle Feng, I’d like to try fighting a Level Six Martial Artist!” Ye Tian smiled, boldly making the request.
“Nope!”
Ye Feng shot him down without hesitation, even scolding him: “Don’t let killing a Howling Moon Wolf get to your head. A Level Six Martial Artist beast is equal to a Level Seven Martial Artist practitioner. No matter how good your blade technique is, you won’t stand a chance. I won’t lecture you anymore, but you should know that the Martial Road needs to be walked one step at a time. You have great talent, but you cannot overestimate yourself!”
Ye Tian could only listen to Ye Feng’s words, speechless.
But just as Ye Feng was wrapping up—
Hong long long!
The earth shook as if ten thousand armored horses were trampling forward, the entire forest shaking as a chain of wolf howls filled the air.
“Owooo~~ Owooo~~” Angry roars and incensed howls filled the air, instantly disrupting the celebrations of the hunters. It was immediately obvious by the multitude of cries that a wolf pack was approaching.
Ye Tian’s expression changed. He still clearly recalled what Ye Meng had said—a single beast wasn’t scary, but a herd of beasts was.
The most dangerous group of animals in this area of the mountainous forest was the wolf pack; wolves were fierce predators and social animals, their packs often numbering in the hundreds and even thousands. Even Level Ten Martial Artists needed to avoid them carefully.
“Wolf pack!” Ye Ba cried out, face filled with worry.
“How is there a wolf pack here? We’re not even that deep into the forest; this isn’t their territory!” Ye Meng called back, confusion mixed with anxiety.
After so many generations of hunting, the Ye Family Village had already figured out which areas shouldn’t be touched and which areas had good hunting opportunities.
Wolf packs never appeared in this area and the Ye Family hunters had come here with great confidence.
But now…
Ye Feng’s pupils shrank as he turned towards the Howling Moon Wolf Ye Tian had killed, immediately spotting the cluster of golden hair around its neck. His face paled with fright. “Not good! This isn’t an ordinary Howling Moon Wolf—it’s a Golden Howling Moon Wolf, the baby of the Wolf King! We killed it and now the pack is hunting us.”
Everyone’s faces fell. It would still have been manageable if the wolf pack was passing by, but if they were coming for revenge, a fight to the death was inevitable.
As the crucial moment came upon them, Ye Feng’s anxiety and fear were shoved away as he calmly arranged people into a defensive formation, shouting at Ye Ba and Ye Meng: “You two, take Ye Tian away. We cannot let anything happen to him!”
“Uncle Feng!” Ye Tian called out anxiously.
But no one paid him any mind!
None of the hunters questioned Ye Feng’s orders.
Ye Meng wanted to speak but words refused to come out of his mouth. Ye Ba nodded solemnly, calling back: “Captain, don’t worry. I’ll die before Ye Tian gets into trouble. Hold on. I’ll bring the Village Chief and the elders back for you.”
“Good!”
Ye Feng nodded, turning back to the defenses.
Even though Ye Tian was unwilling, he was forcefully taken away by Ye Ba and Ye Meng.
“Uncle Feng!”
As the figures blurred in the distance, tears covered Ye Tian’s eyes and an angry roar flew out of his throat.
