Chapter 35 – Can I Let You Go? (1)
Gerard’s eyes were moist.
‘Why?’ I thought I had misunderstood, so I tried to look into his eyes again. But he averted his gaze and pushed my hand stopping the bleeding from his lips.
“I will commence the divorce proceedings as soon as we arrive.”
Bewildered, I hurriedly pulled the hem of his clothes while trying to move away from him. Gerard’s brow furrowed.
“Please let go.”
“…!”
He stood up and tried to get away from me, and in a hurry, I gave strength to the hand holding the hem of his clothes. Added to the rattling of the wagon movements, his buttons were ripped apart. His pectoral muscles and toned abs caught my sight.
And at that moment, the carriage door opened. We looked out the open door at the same time in amazement. The butler Thomas’ mouth widened in embarrassment. And,
Bang! The carriage door was closed again. It was so closed so hard that the wagon wobbled.
“Ha…”
The power went out of my hands on its own. Gerard also came down from my body and slid down to the floor of the carriage. I turned my head, desperately clinging to him.
“At least I’ll be an assistant who won’t betray you and Theodor.”
“Ha, assistant. I don’t need an assistant.”
After he composed his face, he forced the carriage door out with his lips still bleeding
“Hey…”
I got up and tried to catch him, but as soon as he left, Madeleine hurriedly approached. I pushed her away and tried to follow Gerard, but she pulled me.
“You can’t go down like this.”
“Why?”
“You need to organize yourself.”
Only then did I look at my appearance. How much did I roll around? My hair, which had been neatly raised, was loosely clinging to my chest like a crazy woman. In addition, my top was wrinkled and my skirt was raised. In the eyes of others, it was a strange appearance worthy of being rated +19. My face flared up. Madeleine calmly groomed my hair and expressed her own opinions.
“If you feel better, shall I tell them to move you to the main palace?”
I shook my head at her subtle question. Madeleine’s gaze turned to the large teddy bear that had fallen to the carriage floor.
“What is that?”
Actually, I bought it to use for escape and to give to Theodor, but my mouth didn’t move.
“The Grand Prince will like it. No one here ever bought something like this for him.”
Madeleine smiled and hugged the big teddy bear, and I bit my lip in regret.
As Gerard left the carriage with his shirt open, butler Thomas handed him a robe. He walked into the main palace, roughly covering the disheveled front with the robe, and the butler followed him.
“A guest looking for Her Highness the Grand Duchess came and we guided him to the annex as instructed.”
Gerard stopped walking and looked at Thomas.
“Is it a man?”
“Yes.”
‘How long has it been since you parted, and he’s already here again?’
“Is he Curtis from the Brooks guild?”
“How did you know? Oh, perhaps did you discuss it together? Somehow, it became very useful.”
‘Useful? What do you mean?’ Gerard hesitated.
“Bring him to the office.”
He ordered and headed to his room. He had to change his clothes first. However, he didn’t take a few steps before calling the butler again, who was walking away.
“No, just leave it alone.”
“Pardon?” Thomas looked back.
“What’s the point of asking him to come into the office? Send him to me when they’re done.”
Butler Thomas looked at Gerard as he went up to his room with a puzzled expression.
Upon arriving in his room, Gerard looked at his messy clothes and face in the mirror. He let out a vain laugh.
‘Why did you lose your mind? I wasn’t like myself. I wish I could have just casually said divorce. From the beginning, she wasn’t yours.’
His insides relaxed. Shouldn’t this be the end of the nerve battle between the Emperor and the Owens? It was up to her if she was caught in trouble, not something he was worried about. It was right to let her go before Theodor got more attached.
However, he was curious about her true identity. A person who can’t receive his magic. A spy sent by the Emperor and the Owen family.
Gerard kept trying to push Sinclair away.
But… He remembered her looking at him in embarrassment while disguised as a man. She was trying very hard. She couldn’t let go of her love, and she didn’t want to be a spy either. An abused woman who chose freedom and love over the shackles of her family. But it was beautiful only when it was entirely her problem. As his wife, it was a completely different matter. At first, he felt a strange sense of betrayal. But he tried to understand because it was an arranged marriage. Nevertheless, he was angry at the one who was loved by her. Did he deserve it?
A weak guy who couldn’t protect his woman properly, so she dressed as a man and ran out, but she couldn’t find him. A damn bastard. A worthless jerk.
The more he cursed at him, the more annoyed he became.
‘Can I let her go? Would that bastard be able to protect Sinclair? No. Isn’t he making it difficult even now?’ How impatient she must have been when she dressed as a man and ran away. She must have been afraid of getting caught.
However, Sinclair dressed as a man, and the hot breath that the man must have poured out on her overlapped with his own breath entangled in the carriage. Gerard shook his head.
‘I had to come to my senses with cold water.’
‘Forget it. It’s not a formal marriage. Not only yourself at this rate… If you go through divorce…’
‘Theo.’
The small young being came to mind. After Sinclair saved his life, he followed her more than anyone else, writing diaries and reading children’s books together. It would be better to divorce before getting too attached.
Gerard went straight into the cold water and closed his eyes.
‘From today onward, entry into the annex should be prohibited.’ Was it because of the cold water? He clenched his teeth.
Knock, knock–
‘Later.’ He wanted to say that. But the position of Archduke was not one that allowed him such a thing.
Knock, knock, knock–
Eventually, Gerard came out of the water.
“What’s going on?”
Butler Thomas opened the door and entered.
“The Grand Duchess is requesting a meeting with His Highness.”
For a moment, Gerald frowned.
“She says she has something to discuss.”
“…!”
Hu… What a cruel woman.
“That man…?”
“They are waiting together.”
‘Good. Let’s wrap this up cleanly.’
“Okay. Let them come in soon. Oh, and is Schmidt back?”
“Not yet, Sire.”
“Okay, I understand.”
Thomas bowed his head and left. Gerard washed his face in cold water and slapped both cheeks.
Let’s take care of this smoothly and quickly.
