Chapter 39: At His House

He stood in front of the bed with his hands in his pockets, looking down at the woman on the bed. His cold gaze made Janice panic.
“How do you know that it will definitely affect me? You’d already fainted when I picked you up.” He was eagled-eye, and his tone was extremely cold.
Janice panicked. She grabbed the blanket on the bed and tried to calm herself down.
She knew what Max meant. He must have guessed that her allergy and the news online were arranged by her.
“Max, what do you mean? I…”
“think there’s something wrong with the contract between the Wenley Corporation and the Yard Corporation. We’ll delay the signing. An allergy is a very serious matter. You can go home after we find out about the cause of your allergy in the hospital. I still have something on, so I’ll take my leave first.”
Max buttoned his suit jacket and walked out of her ward.
Janice’s expression changed. She was about to speak when Max shut the door.
The contract? This spelled trouble. She had offended Max, and her family was going to blame her.
Janice leaned on the bed in despair. Had she been too impatient?
“To Azure Harbor.” Max strode out of the hospital and ordered Jake coldly.
He suddenly felt as though he had returned to the past, when Shannon waited for him at home every day.
Twenty minutes later, the car stopped at Max’s residential building. He quickly walked upstairs.
When he opened the door, he found that the room was pitch black and reeked of alcohol.
He immediately turned on the lights and walked into the house. Shannon was lying on the sofa with a wine bottle beside her.
Max immediately frowned. When did she learn how to drink? This was the third time he had seen her like this.
He walked over to put a blanket on Shannon, but suddenly noticed the tears at the corner of her eyes.
He subconsciously caressed her face and gently wiped her tears away.
Shannon was in a daze and suddenly felt a cold touch on her face.
She opened her eyes abruptly and got up in shock. She only relaxed a little when she saw who it was.
“What are you doing here?” The fear in her eyes hadn’t completely dissipated, and there was a hint of wariness in her tone.
Max picked up the wine bottle on the floor and the pillow that had fallen off the sofa, then looked at her coldly. Was she really drunk?
“This is my home.” Max took off his suit jacket and sat down beside Shannon.
Shannon suddenly felt a splitting headache. She was really a fool. How could she drink so much at a time like this?
“Then I’ll leave.” Shannon got up and started to walk out.
Max looked at her figure. Why did she change so much? She looked so distant now.
“I saved you. Aren’t you even going to thank me? I remember that you used to be very polite.” Max’s cold voice sounded behind Shannon.
Shannon turned around to look at Max with a hint of anger in her eyes.
“Thank you? If it weren’t for you, I’d probably be a teacher now or working in the Education Department, living an extremely ordinary and happy life. I would have a husband and children, living blissfully.” Shannon walked towards Max, her tone filled with blame and resentment.
Max frowned. She actually dared to speak to him like that?
“Do you think I should be grateful to you just because you pulled me away from the reporters? What made you have such a misconception? Words can’t even express how much I hate you.” Shannon was furious at the thought of what had happened recently.
Tears streamed down her face again. She really wanted to tell Max what kind of person Janice was.
However, she felt that this was really impolite. If a man’s ex-wife badmouthed his fiancée, no one would believe her.
“It’ll hurt when your tears fall on your wound.” Shannon never expected the man to say such a thing to her.
She felt like she was going crazy, but the wound on her face was indeed painful.
“Do you want to die? Did you take the medicine you got from the doctor? Don’t you know that drinking like this will slow down your body’s healing and leave a scar on your face?” Max got up and approached Shannon, his voice domineering and cold.
Shannon retreated step by step. What did the scar on her face have to do with him?
“It has nothing to do with you! Next time, if you dare to lock me in the house again, I’ll definitely sue you for illegal confinement!” Shannon turned around to open the door, preparing to leave.
However, the door was shut by Max. At that moment, he felt that the woman in front of him was lashing out in her drunkenness.
“Do you know what this place is? You don’t have a single cent on you. The reporters have been camping outside your house. By going back now, are you trying to create more headlines?” Max pulled her from the door and gently pressed the door with his fingers. The door was immediately shut and locked
again.
She wanted to say that she was going to stay in a hotel, but staying in a hotel now was undoubtedly a bad choice. Besides, she really hated staying in hotels.
“There are ingredients in the fridge. Go and cook a few dishes,” Max said before leaving the living room.
Shannon stood in the living room and looked at his departing figure angrily. Was she his nanny?
“Max, why should I serve you? I’m still a patient.” Shannon followed behind Max, her eyes filled with protest.
Max watched her as he removed his shirt, revealing his muscular torso.
Shannon immediately turned around. He had the habit of showering the moment he reached home, so he was likely going to the bathroom.
“You can choose not to do it, if you want to stay here forever,” Max whispered into her ear, deliberately threatening her.
Shannon was so angry that her hands were trembling, but she couldn’t fight against Max. Was she going to sleep on the streets like she did in New York? She couldn’t stay here forever. Forget it, she will leave after tonight.
Shannon turned around and walked towards the kitchen. There were all sorts of ingredients available, so she took some of them and cooked a simple meal.
‘When Max came out of the shower, the smell of food was already wafting throughout the room.
Shannon wore an apron, and her long hair draped over her shoulders as she busied herself in the kitchen.
With his hands in his pockets, he leaned against the wall and stared at the woman in front of him.
It had been three years, and this scene had appeared countless times in his mind.
Could it be that I really like this woman? Max asked himself again. However, he concluded once again that it was more out of habit than anything else.
Shannon hadn’t cooked in a long time, so she held the knife and thought about how to cook.
“Ah!” It had been a long time since she’d cut vegetables, and Max didn’t use the kitchenware, so the overly sharp knife sliced her hand in an instant.
Max immediately walked towards her with a hint of nervousness in his eyes.
“What are your eyes made of? You can even hurt yourself while cutting vegetables?!” Max dragged her to the living room and took out the first aid kit.
In his frantic haste, he dropped the first aid kit, causing the contents to spill all over the floor. Shannon felt like she was dreaming.
