Chapter 47: She Was The Only Exception

He made Shannon lie on the car seat, while he crouched at the side.
“President, we’re here.” The car soon arrived at the hospital.
Max carried Shannon and ran as fast as he could towards the hospital until he found a doctor.
“She’s fine. She had a little bit of hypoglycemia, and she fainted because of the heat. After receiving the IV drip, we’ll just need to observe her for a bit and she can leave after that.” The doctor immediately went to inform Max after examining Shannon.
Max relaxed abruptly when he heard this news. She shouldn’t be in such dire straits, so much so that she couldn’t afford a car, right? And how did she end up fainting on the road?
“President, Mr. David called to say that the latest the meeting can be delayed to will be this afternoon. He…”
“Go and prepare some food,” Max interrupted Jake.
Jake stood there and looked at Max in shock. Everyone knew that to Max, nothing was more important than work. How could he reject such an important meeting?
“Then, what about Mr. David…”
“Reject the meeting!”
Jake couldn’t believe it, so he confirmed it again. The only reply he got was Max’s resolute expression.
With that, Max walked towards the ward. Shannon was sleeping on the bed, and her eyelashes were still trembling uncontrollably.
She seemed to be having a nightmare, and her brows were tightly furrowed.
“No! No… No!” Shannon muttered softly, her expression filled with pain.
Max subconsciously reached out to touch the area between her eyes. Feeling the chill from his touch, Shannon jolted awake.
“Don’t move!” Shannon wanted to get up and escape, but she couldn’t move at all, and all she heard was a familiar voice.
Max? Why was he here? Why was her hand still hurting?
“What are you moving about for? They’ll need to reattach the IV drip for you again.” Max put her hand down and went to look for a nurse.
Shannon looked around and realized that she was in the hospital. Why was she here? And why was he here with her?
“This hand is already swollen. Sir, you should help your wife massage the area a little more. I’ll apply the IV on her other hand.” The nurse removed the IV needle and shifted it to her other hand.
Max frowned as he held Shannon’s hand. He had never done such a thing for a woman.
“Sir, don’t worry. Your wife can be discharged after the IV, she’ll be fine.” The nurse saw his frown and thought that he was worried about Shannon.
When Shannon heard these words, a sharp pain shot through her heart, as though it had been stabbed.
“You’re mistaken. This man here has a fiancée, and I’m just a random stranger whom he helped out of kindness.” Shannon couldn’t help but explain, wanting to pull her hand out of his grip.
A trace of anger surfaced in Max’s eyes. She wasn’t this stubbom in the past.
“1m sorry for the mistake,” The nurse said, and she immediately left the ward.
Shannon knew that she couldn’t break free from his grip, so she stopped moving, She just closed her eyes and ignored him.
Her mind was filled with thoughts about how she got to the hospital, and how she got to where she was today. Was there anyone in the world who failed as badly as she did?
“What happened?” Max leaned closer to her.
Shannon was a little frustrated. Didn’t he know what she had faced?
“You don’t have to worry about me. Go and prepare for your wedding,” Shannon broke free from Max’s grip.
For some reason, she suddenly recalled that Janice’s friend had mentioned that Janice and Max were preparing for their wedding.
“Who said I was going to marry her?” Max stood by Shannon’s bed and looked at her coldly.
Why did he feel like her words were alittle sour?
“Didn’t you divorce me back then to give her a title? You can give her one now. Please, leave this place. I don’t want to see you.” Shannon pulled the blanket up and covered her head.
‘Max was the bane of her life. She didn’t know when she would be able to escape the shadow he cast on her.
“President, the food from the restaurant is here.” Someone knocked on the door.
Max harrumphed coldly as the door to the ward opened.
He then pulled Shannon’s blanket away, raised the bed and placed the small table in front of her.
Jake immediately placed the food in front of Shannon, but his gaze swept over to Max intermittently. All these years, he had never seen Max lose his self-control.
Max sat on the sofa and threatened her, “If you don’t want to see me, then eat all of this. Otherwise, I’ll stay here, and you won’t be able to leave the hospital.”
A trace of surprise flashed across Shannon’s eyes. There was no way she could keep on staying here. She still had so many things to do.
She picked up the fork with one hand and started eating, but there was no trace of happiness in Max’s eyes.
At the speed she was eating, it was clear that she didn’t want to see him.
“Miss Zanders, our President meant well. For you, he delayed a very important meeting, you…”
“Will it kill you to remain silent? Get out.” Jake was chased out before he could finish his sentence.
Max sat on the sofa, exuding a chilly aura.
Shannon ate the delicious food that he had prepared for her, her eyes lowered. Would he delay his work just for her?
How was that possible? Jake must have been joking.
“You just lost a lawsuit. Is there a need for you to end up on the streets?” Max didn’t know what had happened to Shannon over the past few days, and he looked at her in confusion.
Shannon stopped eating. She was just a nobody, so no one could understand her pain.
“For a bigshot like you, a lawsuit doesn’t matter. But I’m just a nobody.” A cold sneer flashed across Shannon’s eyes.
Max frowned. A bigshot like him? Who was she referring to?
“What happened?” He got up and approached Shannon.
Shannon tumed her head to the side. No matter what happened, it had nothing to do with him.
“You shouldn’t have saved me. You even saved me in public. Do you think I’ll be grateful for your actions? I won’t. I’d even think that you were being meddlesome.” Shannon’s voice was extremely cold.
After calming down, she had already understood what had happened. She must have fainted on the streets.
But Max had saved her. They would definitely be photographed.
“shannon, why have you become so ungrateful?” Max reached out and grabbed her chin, then looked into her eyes.
Shannon’s eyes were filled with stubbornness. She had become ungrateful? What an ironic remark!
“Is it good for you to treat me like this? If we were photographed by those onlookers, I’d be in a worse state than I am now! Hurry and leave this place. I don’t want to die yet.” Shannon was teary-eyed as she spoke.
Max released his grip when he saw her like this. Was she like this because of him?
“Wait till tonight before you leave.” Max then left the ward.
He didn’t want her to go out on the streets when the temperature outside was at its highest. If she fainted again, he might not be there to save her.
